What was your first guitar setup?
It was a $50 Kay guitar and a $50 Kay amplifier. I purchased that guitar because it had the most knobs. It's sitting in a closet at my mom's house right now. I was 13 at the time, and I was mocked by store employees -- even the guy who helped me pick it out!
What's your current setup?
I use a 50-watt Marshall head and one 4x12 Peavey cabinet. My two main guitars are a stock early-'80s Telecaster and a mongre guitar that has no brand name, which I've kindof pieced together through the years.
What's your signature sound?
A hard, sort of Zeppelin-or Sabbath-style pentatonic riff, but with a single-coil pickup, combined with alot of eccentric noises that often rely on manipulating the toggle switch and whammy pedal.
How do you achieve that sound?
Normally when you play big rock riffs, you do it with humbucker pickups, which have more of a 'metal' sound. But when you use a single-coil pickup, it makes for a unique sound.
What advice would you give a beginning guitarist?
It would depend on what they aspire to. If they aspire to more than just aping the style and tone of their favorite guitar players, then my advice would be to concentrate on the eccentricity of your own playing and run with that.
