Oasis to Play Reading

Oasis have agreed to headline two festivals this summer, following speculation that once their UK tour was pretty much sold out, they would add a festival to their list of live dates. Organisers of the two-day, two venue, Reading and Leeds festivals have confirmed that the band will play Reading on the 25th August and Leeds on the 26th, tickets for which will go on sale at the end of the first week of March. The news comes just days after Noel Gallagher revealed that a 2.5 million pound purse was all that was needed to secure them for a festival appearance, during a radio interview. Quite whether that sum is involved is not known. The band are currently rehearsing for their world tour which begins at the end of this month in Tokyo and ends at the end of July in Edinburgh, following two sold-out shows at Wembley Stadium on the 21st and 22nd. The group, who stormed to the top of the UK singles chart this weekend, have still not lined up any shows in their hometown, Manchester.

First US Tour Date!

Oasis first-announced US show will be on April 22nd at the Murat Theater in Indianapolis, Indiana. Tickets for the event go on sale Feb 19, 2000 at 10am through Ticketmaster.

Big Brother, record label created by singer/songwriter Noel Gallagher after the bossman behind their former label, Creation Records, jumped ship in November, is facing a heavy fine and possible forced name change if a Dutch television company Endemol Entertainments has its way. The television company is claiming they have trademarked the name in Europe.

Also, Oasis are set to record a cover of the Who's classic sixties' teenage anthem, 'My Generation', following the band's pledge that it would record any track, other than a Beatles' tune, chosen by listeners to Steve Lamacq's Evening Session on BBC Radio. The top five tracks chosen were Blur's 'Country House', 'Sympathy For The Devil' by The Rolling Stones, 'Come As You Are' by Nirvana, 'Angels' by Robbie Williams and 'My Generation', which Noel Gallagher pulled from a hat. The Who song is set to be recorded by the BBC for inclusion in a show sometime next month.

In other, more mundane Oasis news, the younger Gallagher brother, Liam, reportedly yelled at a freelance photographer outside his North London home because he thought the photographer was trying to take pictures of his wife in the shower.

Tune Your Radio 1

If you're itching to hear the new Oasis single, 'Go Let It Out', then you've not got long to wait! The song will get its first Radio 1 airing on the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on Tuesday January 4th. On the Evening Session that same day, Steve Lamacq will launch a listeners' vote to get Oasis to record a cover version (not a Beatles song though!) when they do a session for the show at BBC's Maida Vale studios later in the month. On January 17th, Noel and Gem will also drop in on Lamacq Live to play an acoustic set of songs from their new album, including 'Who Feels Love' and 'Sunday Morning Calling'. Steve will then reveal the results of the listener's vote live on air, and the band will record the cover at Maida Vale, along with more new tracks and a couple of old classics. This is your chance to get Oasis to record one of your favourite songs, so make sure you tune it!

Album Title Flubber

Noel Gallagher has blamed alcohol for a misquote in the title of the band's forthcoming album 'Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants'. Gallagher took to physicist Isaac Newton's phrase "standing on the shoulders of giants" after spotting it on the edge of a 2 coin, while drunk in a pub. But as the guitarist told Channel 4's Big Breakfast, he had been too drunk to jot the words down properly and instead had scribbled "standing on the shoulder of giants" on a cigarette packet, missing out that all crucial 's'. "I wrote it down wrong when I was in the pub the night we finished doing the album," he said. "I was messing around with a 2 coin and read round the edge that it said 'standing on the shoulders of giants' so I wrote it on a cigarette packet. "When I woke up in the morning I noticed that it said 'standing on the shoulder of giants'. I was a bit drunk the night before, but it sounded better anyway." 'Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants' is to be released on February 29.

Ibiza Locals Don't Look Forward to Noel

Yesterday's news of Noel Gallagher's move to the Island of Ibiza has prompted concern from his new neighbours. Noel, Meg and their expected child are to move in the mansion formerly belonging to Mike Oldfield, which is kitted out with a recording studio, large grounds and a swimming pool, but even though it's been empty for months, local people are nervous of what the Gallagher invasion may bring. "I would have much preferred it if Mike had stayed as he was really nice and I'm worried a Gallagher on the island will bring trouble" said a waiter at local taverna Es Sabina. This from an island that hosts Manumission...

Chemical Brothers Refuse to Remix 'Helter Skelter'

Oasis is pretty upset because the Chemical Brothers have rejected their request to remix their cover of the Beatles' song "Helter Skelter."

While the Chemical Brothers sight "bad karma" as their reason, Oasis' Noel Gallagher feels its just an excuse not to work with his group. In Britain's tabloid The Daily Star, he says "If they didn't want to work with us, they should just say so."

Apparently, the Chemical Brothers do not want their name asociated with the track that in 1969, inspired the mass-murders of Charles Manson. Manson stated that the track inspired him to kill seven people in Hollywood a year after the Beatles' White Album was released, which contained the controversial song.

"More Magic" on New Album

What can we expect from the new Oasis album, "Standing On The Shoulder of Giants"? Short, sharp shocks of songs: there are 10 tracks, but the album barely reaches over 40 minutes, which may feel abbreviated to some fans. "They're more groove-based than song-based, and there's a lot more psychedelic effects on the record," notes Gallagher. "This album's been thought out, and it's more interesting to listen to. There's a bit more magic sprinkled on it."

Oasis have switched producers, replacing longtime collaborator Owen Morris with Mark "Spike" Stent [US, Massive Attack, Mansun]. "When you say [his name], people automatically assume it's going to be a dance record," says Gallagher, "which it isn't. It's more contemporary." And typically balls-out, opening with the instrumental "Fucking In The Bushes," which Gallagher swears is not a working title. "It makes sense when you hear it. It's quite a hard-sounding song, but it's also quite funny." Other songs include first single "Go Let It Out" and a Liam Gallagher-penned tune, "Little James," which Noel describes as "Beatlesque."

Alan McGee Leaves Creation Records

Alan McGee and his business partner Dick Green , who co-founded Creation Records 17 years ago and who steered the company to global success with artists such as Oasis, My Bloody Valentine, Teenage Fanclub, The Jesus And Mary Chain and Primal Scream amongst others, have agreed with Sony Music Entertainment that they will part company with Creation next year in order to pursue a number of new ventures.

Full details of the pairs departure have still to be finalised , but it is likely that they will leave the company in June 2000 .

Alan McGee commented :

"Creation Records has been our life for 17 years. We started the company from nothing but its the end of an era. Its the end of a decade, a new millennium and life begins at 40. I feel like trying my hand at some new things. I still intend to be involved with music but there are other areas that I am keen to investigate. It will be a sad day for us both when we leave but the future is bright on all fronts and I am genuinely excited about starting afresh. Dick and I would like to thank all of our staff ,past and present , and the artists of course, for making Creation Records what it is and hopefully well be remembered as one of the great British independent labels." Creation staff and artists have already been informed. "Ever since we did the deal just over 7 years ago my regard and admiration for Alan and Dick have continued to grow," said Paul Russell, Chairman of Sony Music Entertainment Europe."I entirely respect the decision they have reached and understand their reasons. Throughout our relationship we have always supported them and will continue to do so. I am sad to see them go but wish them all the best for the future."

New Oasis Bassist - Andy Bell

Oasis is whole again with the announcement that Andy Bell, formerly of Ride and Hurricane #1, has joined the band as its bass player. Bell has been rehearsing with his new bandmates, and will accompany them to play a series of holiday festivals for U.S. radio stations, according to the band's British label, Creation Records.

"I'm very excited," Bell said in a statement. "When I got asked, it was not a difficult decision to make. Oasis have always been an inspiration. I'm looking forward to it."

The new Oasis line-up will open a world tour in late February in Japan and will be on the road for most of 2000, according to its label. Its fourth album, "Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants," is scheduled for release on Feb. 28. The album was completed before the departures of Arthurs and McGuilgan.
