The members of No Doubt, who have been writing new songs since
January, will spend the first two weeks of April in Jamaica working on music
with the famed production team of Sly Dunbar & Robbie Shakespeare, according
to bass player Tony Kanal.
"We feel musically fulfilled by what we we accomplished on Return of
Saturn. At this point, we want to experiment some more and just have
fun," Kanal tells allstar. He added that he was inspired by a trip
to Jamaica last year. "We've all been listening to a lot of dancehall
reggae," he says.
Among the songs the group will work on with Sly & Robbie is one that it
recently collaborated on with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics. The band will also
record new material with reggae producer-musicians Clevie (who's played with
Buju Banton and Beenie Man, among others) and Steelie (Shabba Ranks, Yellowman).
Plus, the band recently recorded some tracks with the hot hip-hop production
crew the Neptunes, and it's also planning to collaborate on one track with Dr.
Dre. However, it's too soon to tell if all of these planned collaborations will
make it onto the next No Doubt album, admits Kanal.
In other No Doubt-related news, singer Gwen Stefani shot a video in downtown
L.A. last week with rapper Eve for the song "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" from
Eve's new Scorpion album.
