Secondly, being a holiday and that sometimes there is time to kill, I = got to do a bit of work on my Goo site, Goo Goo Dolls Online. I finally = scanned and posted all my Goo t-shirts. Check it out, the address for my = site is www.pce.net/joejr I have 20 different Goo shirts on it, and I know a lot of you have been = asking to see what the older shirts look like. I have been working on a couple of my other sites that I need to = maintain which takes me away from working on my Goo site. They were probably talking about the Buffalo news - there are 5 articles about them in it. You can see the main one online: http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/19991126/1046516.htm the other ones talk about how dave's life changed in a day, who's opening for the goos at the buffalo shows, and how they're collecting toys for charity. in another part of the gusto, there's an article called Johnny Goo is Buffalo Bound, and I thought it was cool so I typed it up. It may not mean as much to non-Buffalonians, but I thought you guys would like it anyway: Johnny Goo Is Buffalo Bound by Anthony Violanti Buffalo is a city of old haunts, dark memories and deep attachments for Johnny Rzeznik. The once-punk kid from the East side is now a rock star of the highest magnitude as a leader of the Goo Goo Dolls. Now, after 6 million album sales, three Grammy nominations and three No. 1 singles in a row, he's itching to come home next week. "I can't wait to get home," Rzeznik said recently about the three sold-out concerts Wednesday through next Friday the Goos are playing at Shea's Performing Arts Center. "I want to go shopping at Tops at four in the morning and just browse around the store," said Rzeznik. "I'm serious; to me, that's Buffalo and that's something I truly miss." These days, with his styled hair, flashy clothes and make-up, Rzeznik appears to play the rock star role to the hilt. He is recognized among the top writers of his generation, with moving ballads such as "Name" and "Iris," and yet can still rock with the best of them. How big was "Iris," the hit from the "City of Angels" soundtrack? It was 1998's most played song on the radio, with over 527,000 plays to date, according to Broadcast Data Systems, which monitors airplay. Compare that to 298,000 for "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion. The Goos were selected by MTV to headline a New Year's Eve broadcast in Times Square that will be broadcast around the world. Regardless of those accomplishments, though, to his critics - including some in Buffalo - Rzeznik will never be good enough. Some resent him because of the break-up of the original Goo Goo Dolls nearly four years ago, when drummer George Tutuska left the bad after a bitter dispute with Rzeznik. Others say Rzeznik sold out and his once hardcore rock sound turned soft to sell records. Still others may be jealous of the leader of the wild and crazy bar band that is now top of the pops. Rzeznik, who turns 34 this week, has learned to cope with the criticism. There was a time, after the 1st No. 1 hit "Name" in 1995, that he had writers' block and insecurity about writing music. That self-doubt seems to be gone. "I finall believe that I do what I do and I progress at my own rate and I've been honest to myself and my own music," Rzeznik said. "I haven't made a conscious decision that I'm going to do this and accomplish that, but a lot of people's viewpoint of me has changed. I'm sorry for that but I can't control the opinions of other people." Some things about Rzeznik haven't changed. "Johnny was real wild and crazy in the old days and he's still a little crazy but he's a brilliant songwriter," said longtime friend Artie Kwitchoff. "I think it's hard for him sometimes back in Buffalo, because it's his hometown, people take him for granted in a way, and maybe there's some jealousy. But he can handle it." Dave Schultz, currently touring with the Goos, has been travelling with Rzeznik for the past 14 months. He knows the difference between the image and the reality of the man known locally as Johnny Goo. "Some people who don't know him think Johnny is a prima donna, but it's not true," Schultz said. "Some people can't see beyond the image; he's an intelligent, friendly, and real Buffalo kind of guy." To fans of his work, Rzeznik possesses the quality of all great rock songwriters. He makes the personal universal and isn't afraid to expose the naked emotions most people hide. That's especially true for the Goos' next scheduled single, "Broadway." It's about a bar on Broadway in Buffalo, and the rocker is filled with images of booze, dreams, and emotional scars. It is one of Rzeznik's most autobiographical songs. "So much of that song is about Buffalo," he said. "When we do the video, we want to make sure that comes across." Rzeznik's bond to his hometown stretches back to his former home near Clark Street on the East side, and it wasn't always a happy one. He grew up with an alcoholic father who sometimes physically abused his mother. Rzeznik himself battled alcohol as a young man, and there was reason for his pain: Both of Rzeznik's parents were dead by the time he was 17. A visit home rekindles those memories but also gives Rzeznik a kind of inner resolve. "I always get in a car and drive back to the old neighborhood where I grew up," he said. "Then I drive over to the grain silos where I used to play. I go by the church, St. Ann's, (near Broadway and Emslie Street) where I was an altar boy. "I see my friends and family back in Buffalo, the people who are real. All this sort of reconnects me. I say to myself, 'OK, this is what I'm made of.' And it's like OK, I can go back there now." In the past four years the Goo Goo Dolls have put Buffalo on the music map like no other group. They always point out to the national media they are from Buffalo and proud of it. During this week's shows at Shea's, the Goos have turned the opening acts over to strictly local talent, including Scott Carpenter, Velour and Lance Diamond. It's a rare hometown gesture by a band of the Goos' stature. The band is also urging fans to bring toys to their shows at Shea's to help needy children. This is a triumphant week for Rzeznik, not only due to the sold-out shows at Shea's, but because he is home again. Well my fingers have my workout of the day. *^*Amanda*^* http://www.gurlpages.com/music/goo-goo-girl ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Nov 1999 18:39:30 EST To: goo@mailinglists.org From: WAKKOHEAD@aol.com Subject: mag ad Message-ID: <0.6b7c5619.25707432@aol.com> so, on the opposite side of the cover of the new cmj new music mag, theres an ad about the mp3 tour... pretty cool page...anyhoo, its in the mag w/the foo fighters on the cover...stacey ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Nov 1999 17:41:26 CST To: goo@mailinglists.org From: "Allison Schaffer" Subject: [GOO] free download of GGD desktop theme Q? On the Goo mailing list I'm on=20 (goo@mailinglists.org), we are trying to get people organized that are=20 attending that show to sing Happy Birthday to John since Dec 5 is his=20 birthday. We would like to get the word out to as many people as possible=20 that we are trying to do this b/c I think this will be a great Birthday gift= =20 to him from us for all the hard work this year (please understand that I'm=20 not excluding Robby, Mike, Nathan or Dave on purpose or anything. This was=20 thought up of due to the final Buffalo concert falling close to John's=20 birthday). We are going to try to pass out flyers at the day of the concert= =20 as a reminder. According to the organizer of this project, Fay will be=20 posting this plan on her site. =20 The plan so far is this: We will sing "Happy Birthday" to John AFTER Iris. Since this is a song=20 everybody who isn't a dedicated Goo fan like us knows, we thought this would= =20 be the right song to sing him. Since the encore is right after Iris, we onl= y=20 have a few seconds to do this. PLEASE EVERYBODY!! PLEASE HELP ME!! I will send your email addy to th= e=20 organizer of this project so she can include you on the list of people who=20 are already helping. Thank you sooo much for reading this if you read this far!! Please pray tha= t=20 this works b/c I know many of us that know of this project really would love= =20 for this to happen. Just image his face when we sing this to him? I know=20 I'm far back and I won't be able to see it (I will have binoculars=20 though...LOL) but I know it would be one of the greatest expressions in the=20 world (someone in the front row, TAKE A PIC OF THIS PLEASE AND SEND ME A=20 COPY, OK?) that would be heartmelting :) Again thank you for taking up with my babbling and please, if you can help=20 us, please do.
