The Stiff as Toys and Tall as Men Discussion Board
Rules & FAQ
SATATAM Discussion Board History in Brief
The Stiff As Toys And Tall As Men (SATATAM) site has been around since the beginning of mass public use of the World Wide Web. The site's creator, Bob K, included a discussion board that allowed other Cure fans to contact and converse with each other in an Internet forum, similar to already existing e-mail mailing lists and newsgroups, but in a format that could be access from any computer terminal connected to the Internet. While it was easy for us Cure fans to discuss their feelings, ask questions, and meet other fans, it also attracted those who either only posted advertisements (spam), did not talk about The Cure at all, or were simply out to hurt others. The regular posters (myself included) started to demanding for someone to moderate and Bob K diligently cleaned things up, but soon he found that he didn't have the time nor the patience to do so.Eventually, Bob K appointed me to moderate, not only because I volunteered for the job, but also because he was getting much to busy with his job and all he had time for was maintaining the actual website. He outlined to me what his goals were and after much discussion, we agreed upon a set of guidelines to aid how I would moderate the board. These guidelines have remained the same for the past three years.
About a year and a half later, Bob K got a new job and it turned out his responsibilities there would now take up all of his time and he no longer had time to update the site either. So, he sold the site to Music Fan Clubs, giving them full ownership of the site and its contents. At the beginning, moderation powers had not been set up yet, so for about a month after the move to the new server, the board was back to the chaos of old, but even more so under the new ownership and wider reach. A few weeks later, the administrator account was set up and I was given the honor of maintaining the site. Soon, I myself found that I started to get more busy, so I asked Thistlemoon to help moderate the board, and that's where we are today.

FAQ:
Is the discussion board a chat room?
Nope, sorry. The SATATAM discussion board is intented for just that - discussion. While we encourage discussion and Cure fans getting to know one another, idle chit-chat scrolls through the board making it hard for people to find what they are looking for. If you are looking for a chat room to chat with other Cure fans, please try the links page here at SATATAM.
Can one advertise their Cure website on the board?
Well, while we all would like to have traffic visit our sites, advertisements adds to the clutter of the board. The SATATAM site does have a links page that is quite easy to use and add your link to. Simply type in your URL and name of the site and it will be added automatically. We suggest using this page rather than cluttering the board with posts that contain no other content than an advertising for your own personal website [i.e. - "Visit my site!" or "Site updated!"].
This anti-spam rule applies to all types of advertisements.
What about discussion of MP3s?
MP3s are still in the "gray area" of legal issues on the internet. Many Cure MP3 sites have come and gone and most fans would like to keep these resources alive. The band themselves have admitted to having tolerance of MP3s of live songs, however much of the recording industry does not hold the same viewpoint and would like to shut down all sites involving trading of MP3s. With this said, please refrain from posting the locations of Cure MP3s or inquiring where you can find some. This topic would be much better suited for e-mail, particularly the mailing lists.
Can I sell Cure items here? Or can I post about a Cure item I want?
No, absolutely not. The SATATAM site has a separate board (SATATAM Buy/Sell/Trade board) strictly for buying/selling/trading Cure items. This was set up as a "marketplace" so one can get immediate feedback about items they may be looking for or selling. Please be aware that one needs to be registered to sell or trade items - this is as simple as e-mailing a moderator w/ a chosen username, password and e-mail address. That's all. The reason for this is to try and protect people from fraud.
How do I get on the profile list of regular posters?
Post regularly.
Did the Cure cover "Come on Eileen" or "I'll Stop the World"?
Nope. None of those songs were ever covered by the Cure. For some reason, these songs got onto Napster and E-Circles and were misnamed as being by the Cure. Don't be fooled and don't waste your time downloading them unless you enjoy the originals.
OK - so you delete posts. Why?
Contrary to popular belief, we are not fascist dictators who feel the need to delete posts based on personal beliefs or opinion. Posts that get deleted are ones that are deemed as not contributing to the board. Examples would be, "Robert Smith is God. Don't you agree?" or "Anyone who hates Wild Mood Swings sucks."
The rules should be simple and easy to understand. Do not insult others - this will result in your post being deleted immediately. Do not overuse foul language or vulgarity - there are people who visit this site of all ages; please remember that. Posts not containing Cure-relevant matter - this should be obvious; these posts will be deleted as well.
Other suggestions:
- Have respect for band members! - This discussion board is a high-traffic site. To think that members of the band never visit the board or hear about gossip regarding them is overassuming. Put yourself in their shoes for one moment - would you particularly enjoy coming to a discussion board only to find people digging up dirt or gossiping about your private affairs? Probably not. The members are no different. So please refrain from this sort of gossip and let them lead their private lives in just that - privacy.
- E-Mail is your friend!! - Please, if you want to tell someone off or discuss personal things that aren't Cure-related, use e-mail!! This includes complimenting someone on their website. And don't give the excuse "But I don't have an e-mail address!!" because getting an e-mail address is probably one of the easiest, free things to get and use on the Internet. If you want to get an e-mail address, I recommend going to Yahoo! Mail, NetAddress, or *bleh* Hotmail. If the person you want to contact doesn't have an e-mail address, then encourage them to get one.
- Try other resources before posting a question - If you're a newbie Cure fan and you want more info on a certain Cure-related subject, please don't post the question on the discussion board because many people will see it as stupidity. Although those people are stupid themselves, you might want to save yourself some unnecessary ridicule. This website is VERY comprehensive, so if you want to find out what album a song is on, when The Cure played a certain city or venue, the lyrics to a song, etc., then please visit the rest of this website and the websites that are linked from this website. If it's just general questions regarding the band and band history, please visit The Cure FAQ. If you can't find what you're looking for at these resources, then you might want to post a question on the board.
- Be aware that there are other sites that specialize in areas about the Cure. - Most every Cure fan is excited about concerts, but please be aware that questions about these things only get lost in the board, and you will most likely not get an answer. We suggest visiting A Chain of Flowers regarding setlists, reviews, etc. Craig does a great job on keeping fans up to date about the latest Cure news and info. Also, the SATATAM Buy/Sell/Trade board is a good place to place inquiries about recorded concerts, bootlegs, etc.
Thanks,
Verdugo and Thistlemoon
