Title: John talks new album, guitars Post by Shannon on Sep 2nd, 2010, 3:20pm Goo Goo Dolls Johnny Rzeznik Talks New Album, Guitars Russell Hall | 09.02.2010 Goo Goo Dolls frontman Johnny Rzeznik says his philosophy about making music hasnt changed much since the bands early years. And, to this day, hes unsure whether or not a song hes written will be a hit. I only know I only know what resonates with me, he said. The songs I think are best hardly ever become the hits. When we first started out, we just wanted to be The Replacements. But once we were able to grow beyond our influences, we thought, Wow, were coming into our own voice. I dont want to give that up, whether it means commercial success, or not. Released on Tuesday (August 31), the Goo Goo Dolls new album, Something for the Rest of Us, is more topical and less personal, thematically, than the bands previous efforts. Music-wise, the album sports the layered, anthemic guitar sound thats become a trademark for the group. Rzeznik says he often turned to a Les Paul Deluxe to achieve that sonic density. I like those mini-humbucker pickups, he says. They have a really tightly focused mid-range. In places where I need something less soft than the 335, or less chunky than the Les Paul, the Les Paul Deluxe fits perfectly, for a given song. Im amazed more people dont play them. Theyre really amazing guitars, and theyre still relatively inexpensive compared to Les Pauls of the same year. The Goo Dolls recorded much of the album at their refurbished studio in their hometown of Buffalo, New York. Although he now resides in Los Angeles, Rzeznik says Buffalo remains a muse for him. I do most of my writing there. Theres that clich about going home to find your roots, but theres some truth in that. Theres a real vibe there, for me. Im sort of made from the material of that place, from the rust belt. A lot of people have hard lives there, but theyre amazing people. http://www.gibson.com/en%2Dus/Lifestyle/News/goo%2Dgoo%2Ddolls%2D0902/ |
