Concert review: Goo Goo Dolls connect with crowd in lively show at Superpages.com Center

A not-quite-full moon rose like a slightly irregular pearl above Superpages.com Center as the headlining Goo Goo Dolls took the stage. True, there's an old rubric that states: "When the act is dead, they play the shed." It could be a reference to the sheet metal construction of indoor-outdoor venues like Superpages, but the Dolls seemed very much alive to the 5,000 or so fans who were in attendance Saturday night.

Switchfoot was a good choice for an opener, with the emotive, accessible style of lead vocalist Jon Foreman closely mirroring that of the Dolls' John Rzeznik.

Far removed from their early days of performing Cream and Plimsouls covers, the Dolls, led by Rzeznik, seemed to connect with the crowd, elicting large waves of applause for songs such as "The Sweetest Lie" (from their long-awaited new album, Something for the Rest of Us, finally released this year) and "Big Machine," from 2002's Gutterflower.

Rzeznik has done a good job of playing down, if not resisting, his frontman good looks, coming off more as an everyman than eye candy, particularly on his version of one of the band's classics, "Dizzy," from 1998's Dizzy Up the Girl.

When he sang "I'm not the one you should fear," from "Here is Gone," he came off less like a bully and more like a supportive friend, just the kind of vibe that has endeared the Buffalo, N.Y.-based band to its fans.

Naturally, songs from Something for the Rest of Us predominated, and the title track was particularly trenchant, addressing (as does the entire album) the fear and uncertainty of the last few years. "Another night with all my friends/The kind you'll never see again" were a few of the lines from that song, but they were miles away from the feeling of the evening.
