Title: Counting down to SFTROU one year at a time Post by i dont knO on Aug 6th, 2010, 7:47pm Hey guys! The ninth GGD studio album is coming out at the end of the month! And while a waiting a couple weeks is nothing compared to the four and a half years weve waited, I have decided I need something to help pass the time. Ive decided to look back at the last 25 years of the band, one year a day. Ill be posting a bootleg, video, interview or news article for each year. If you have anything youd like to add for any particular year (media, a story about your first show, the story about how you became a fan, photos), please do. This thread is all about celebrating the history of the GGDs as they add another album to their history. So, first up: 1986 The year of creation. The year I am shocked they made it beyond. I have exactly 1 bootleg from 1986 (or, its rumored to be from 1986, but could very well be early 1987). Its called the Purple Bedroom and it was broadcast over the alternative college station WBNY 91.3 in Buffalo, NY. Songs played: Gimme Shelter Love Dolls Torn Apart Im Addicted Different Light Hammerin Eggs Born To Be Wild Livin In a Hut Ballroom Blitz Slaughterhouse http://www.mediafire.com/?vb6jovtbe24plj2 |

Title: Re: Counting down to SFTROU one year at a time Post by i dont knO on Aug 8th, 2010, 6:50pm 1988. 1988 was the year of the Goos' first 'proper' tour, the Cram the Van tour. So, naturally, I do not actually have any audio/video from this year because that would make too much sense. Instead, this is an article from the Buffalo News from 1995, recounting a day in the life of the Goos on tour in 1988. It's definitely one of those stories that continues to make me wonder how they managed to all stay alive and keep the band mostly together for 25 years. (It also features Artie Kwitchoff and I look for any excuse to post about Artie Kwitchoff.) Buffalo News (New York) May 12, 1995, Friday, City Edition 'WELCOME TO HELL. YOU MUST BE THE HOUSE BAND. RIGHT THIS WAY.' This is the story of one 24-hour period during the Goo Goo Dolls' spring '88 "Cram the Van" tour. Most friends and fans of the band have heard it, in one form or another. And though the tale is 7 years old, many think it explains a great deal about the band's mental state ever since. Picture the Goos traveling down the East Coast, "in basically a windowless van," stresses ex-Goos manager Artie Kwitchoff, of the transportation used. "At least four guys, drinking beer, eating bagels and peanut butter, driving straight through -- no ventilation." One sleeps inches from the ceiling atop a pile of gently rocking equipment. Two more cram onto a tiny mattress on the van floor. Someone drives. They arrive in Miami "bruised, poorly rested, and shaking from fear and confusion," and after their show they wind up separated -- a move that will forever haunt them. "George and Robby completely disappear," Kwitchoff says. "So we crash with a fan who says he'll take us home with him. Pretty soon we realize we are being driven way, way too far away. "We get there, and this guy's house is a nightmare. I refuse to go in, and feign sleep in the van. But Johnny and the guitar tech stay in the house with this guy, his sister and a bunch of other people. "In the middle of the night, Johnny hears this guy trying to put the moves on his own sister! 'Don't start that @#$ % with me again,' she's screaming, fighting him off. "Johnny, who is already a physical wreck, is now an emotional wreck. He comes out to the van, gets in and just sits. He is ashen. He's mute. The guitar tech is wordless. "We go look for Robby and George. They've slept on the beach -- totally wasted. We haul 'em in the van. Johnny finally just passes out. "Everyone is quiet, and I pull on the highway that takes you from Miami across the state. It's called Alligator Alley because alligators roam it freely, and every 10 feet there is a sign: 'Do Not Get Out of Your Car,' 'Warning: Alligators,' 'Do Not Stop.' "We're tooling along. So much so that I miss the only exit for gas, for about 100 miles. Robby finally wakes up, looks at the dash and says, 'Uh, hey, man, we might wanna get some gas.' I look down. The needle is pinned on E. "We are driving on fumes, there are alligators all over the place, and we have missed the only exit for gas. Johnny and George sleep peacefully through this; I am sweating blood. "Finally, we see an exit, and just as we begin to roll off it, honest to God, the engine dies. We push the van up the road, find some gas. "We arrive in St. Petersburg. We do the show, and Johnny is so furious he completely wears himself out, gets totally hammered, dives into a fountain and splashes everyone. "The show ends, and Johnny, dripping with booze and sweat and fountain water, seeks his revenge by opening up the van doors and simply passing out -- soaking wet -- on top of George and Robby. We take off. We head for the next gig." -- Lauri Githens |

Go listen to it anyways! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/crookedrhyme/goo/jedalbumandpainting.jpg While on an adventure with another GGD fan last year, I had the opportunity to see the original painting of the album cover. The right is the illegal photograph I took while unnamed other fan was on lookout. :D Up for download today: Toronto, ON 1/9/1989 audio. The setlist is: Torn Apart Out of Sight Different Light Up Yours Love Dolls No Way Out Don't Fear the Reaper Misfortune Road to Salinas Laughing Seventh of Last Month Come On My Girl Livin' In a Hut I'm Addicted Gimme Shelter http://www.mediafire.com/?c502uc7m72lubcc This is actually a very decent recording considering the circumstances. It is not PC at all so if you are sensitive to certain topics, this is your advance warning. (Someone, let me know you can download this. Mediafire apparently hates Canadian bootlegs) |

Title: Re: Counting down to SFTROU one year at a time Post by Lamb_Chop on Aug 10th, 2010, 1:32pm Aw dang... Why didn't they ever play James Dean? When I went to their concert in Iowa this past May, my friend and I kept yelling out for them to play James Dean. They were probably thinking, "What the hell? Someone still LISTENS to Jed?" |
||
Title: Re: Counting down to SFTROU one year at a time Post by i dont knO on Aug 10th, 2010, 3:35pm They did play James Dean at times. But when they were sort of on a major record label, they were apparently encouraged not to play it. You can hear constant 'PLAY JAMES DEAN' in many older bootlegs. John would sometimes play it and either not sing the last line or tell the audience to sing it. |

Title: Re: Counting down to SFTROU one year at a time Post by i dont knO on Aug 10th, 2010, 7:38pm 1990 Hold Me Up is released! The GGDs get called sell outs for the first time! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/crookedrhyme/goo/art_holdmeup.jpg Today's media: Hold Me Up press video. I looked on Youtube and there were only about 3 minutes of the video uploaded so I uploaded the full thing. I hope this is new and interesting for some people. I tried to put it on Youtube but it came out muted so here's the download instead. http://www.mediafire.com/?iwra1qb4rucaoeg Story time! I call HMU my favorite album. I wouldn't say any songs on it stand out as my absolute favorites but I love this album as one complete piece. It all fits together and flows nicely (if a little jarring at times). I feel like it gets ignored frequently because some people lump it in with the first two albums and write it off, but I think the difference in maturity and musicianship between Jed and Hold Me up is way more significant than between any other 'neighboring' albums. This was the third album by the Goos I owned (November 1998 ). I had owned DUTG and ABNG for about two weeks when I bought HMU. I instantly loved the first two and couldn't really appreciate HMU for a long time. I bought SSCW a couple weeks later and instantly loved that too. Then, I was bedridden with pneumonia for the entire next summer and HMU just happened to be in my portable cd player. I was too sick to even change the cd so I listened to nothing but HMU for about 3 months. HMU is sort of the soundtrack to a really bizarre portion of my life. :D |

Title: Re: Counting down to SFTROU one year at a time Post by i dont knO on Aug 12th, 2010, 8:00pm 1992 There are definitely parts of GGD history that are fuzzy and this is one of them. I don't know if it is true or if it was just told so many times that it was just accepted as the truth. The story goes that some band member took home the demos from SSCW and kept them under some loose floorboards in their apartment. When they moved out, someone else found the demos and circulated them. True or not, it makes a good story. This probably isn't new to anyone, but it's worth a revisit if you haven't listened in a while. 44 Minute SSCW Demo Reel. http://www.mediafire.com/?4prht78sk0xtia6 (This particular set of demos was shared publicly by googoofan5 on WOG about 3 years ago. It's probably the most universally loved album by anyone who's called himself a fan of the band. The GGDs get called sell outs again anyways! Here's the album cover beside what the SSCW building looks like now. It is not torn down yet, despite what people (including Robby) have said. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/crookedrhyme/goo/sscwthenandnow.jpg First, go listen to SSCW. Then, here's another bootleg. This is Irving Plaza, NYC 6/3/93. http://www.mediafire.com/?b0iudo8nc86zc0i It's an amazing batch of songs. There is tons of banter. Even if you're not a bootleg person, at least listen to Two Days in February. It's one of my favorite stories. Setlist Just the Way You Are Lucky Star Fallin' Down So Outta Line Laughing Up Yours Torn Apart On The Lie Stop the World Two Days in February Different Light Close Your Eyes Hey Million Miles Away We Are the Normal Cuz You're Gone Another Second Time Around There You Are Girl Right Next To Me Don't Fear the Reaper/ 867-5309 And if that's not quite enough, here are links to two songs taken from the SSCW record release party at New World Records in Buffalo, NY. A bunch of songs were aired on a local show on a public access channel in WNY about 4-5 years ago. Judging by the number of people videotaping in these videos, I am at a loss on why at least one version of the whole show has not surfaced. Title: Re: Counting down to SFTROU one year at a time Post by i dont knO on Aug 14th, 2010, 5:32pm 1994 George's last show was 12/31/94 at Blind Mellon's (Cheektowaga, NY, I believe). Whatever happened is anyone's guess. John, Robby and George have all changed their stories on him quitting or being fired. I'm taking the lazy route. A Boy Named Goo demos that were already uploaded to my Mediafire account. Sorry, they're not zipped, you'll need to download each one individually. They're pretty late stage demos so there are no wild differences, but you get the Stand Alone demo as well. http://www.mediafire.com/?ttyf6jdw370t3 For those who may not know, Stand Alone was written by George and slated to appear on ABNG. After George was replaced, John and Robby decided it would be best to remove the song from the album. And... this article is about the break up. It's from January 1995, but let's pretend it's 1994. Buffalo News (New York) January 17, 1995, Tuesday, City Edition HEADLINE: GOO-BYE, DOLLS; DRUMMER OUSTED IN BIG-TIME BREAKUP BYLINE: By ANTHONY VIOLANTI, News Critic The Goo Goo Dolls, Buffalo's most influential young rock band, is breaking up its original lineup after nearly a decade together. And the timing couldn't be worse. The band is scheduled to release a national album and single in March for Warner Bros. Records. George Tutuska, drummer for the band, says he has been forced out of the trio. Remaining members Johnny Rzeznik and Robby Takac -- both guitarists -- intend to continue the group, and a replacement drummer has yet to be named. The split is causing shock waves on the Buffalo music scene. The Goo Goo Dolls are one of the few local acts to record for a major national label and still live in the city. They have been together since 1986, and the new album represents a crucial point in the band's career that may determine the Goo Goo Dolls' future as a national act. "I'm still shocked," a crestfallen Tutuska said in an interview with The Buffalo News this weekend. "I didn't leave of my own accord. Anyone who knows the band is aware of what's going on. I put the last 10 years of my life into that band, and it really hurts. That's all I can say." There has been a long-simmering dispute among the group. It had apparently been building over the past year and came to a boil this month, when Tutuska reportedly was told to leave. "We just had differences that could not be settled," Rzeznik said. "We've had a lot of heartaches and frustrations. We've had some good times, too, but we just couldn't go on like this." Takac agreed. "There were problems, internally, within the group," he said. "We had a lot of uncomfortable feelings that we encountered when we all got together in the recording studio. I think a lot of it is due to the fact we've been together for so long." The split comes with the future looking bright for the band. Chris Mundy of Rolling Stone wrote in 1993 that stardom is "close at hand" for the Goo Goo Dolls. Rocker Paul Westerburg said the Dolls "have a great future." A Warner Bros. spokesman said, "We think the new album has a chance to be the biggest one this band has made." It took eight years for the Goo Goo Dolls to reach this point, and that's an eternity for a rock band to stay together. The Goo Goo Dolls started playing in local clubs in 1986 and won a huge following with their blue-collar, hard-driving sound. In 1989, the band produced an independent album, "Goo Goo Dolls," that established it as one of Buffalo's most original groups. The Goos signed with Metal Blade Records, a subsidiary of Warner's, and released two critically acclaimed albums, "Jed" (1989) and "Hold Me Up" (1992). In 1993, the Goo Goo Dolls moved to the major label and released "Superstar Car Wash" for Warner. publications such as Rolling Stone, the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times raved about the album, but itfailed to make a dent nationally. Many of the Goos' longtime fans criticized the album for being too soft and pop-oriented. Rzeznik later complained that Warner Bros. made the band change producers on the record, and decided who would produce the video. Warner Bros. also selected the first single, "We Are the Normal," an introspective soft number instead of the band's trademark thrash pop sound. The failure of "Superstar" to become a big hit apparently created a tense atmosphere for the band members while they were working on the new album. Sources close to the band say there have been a number of clashes in the recording studio and ongoing battles over "differences" among group members over music and lyrics. "The last album caused a lot of tension," a record industry source said. "That has put more pressure on all of them for the new album. It's a shame, because it's a great record." The album, called "A Boy Named Goo," features a much harder sound and deeper lyrics than the last one. It was produced by Lou Giordano, who has worked with such national acts as Sugar, the Smithereens and Husker Du. The first single to be released next month is "The Only One." The band's change in status could hurt the new album. The Goo Goo Dolls will have to tour and promote the album with a new lineup. Rzeznik is determined to succeed. "We're still really passionate about our music," Rzeznik said. "Me and Robby are going to go on, and the label is supporting the album. We love music, and that's the most important thing." Takac said: "We haven't given up on the record. We'll do whatever we have to to make it work. If it becomes a big hit, all of us, including George, can make money." The Goo Goo Dolls' last public appearance was a New Year's Eve show at Blind Mellons. "It was was an emotional night for all of us," Rzeznik said. Both Rzeznik and Takac were in a somber mood as they talked about the split. "We're not happy about what happened. It has cast a dark shadow over everything, but we have to keep going," Rzeznik said. "I wish George nothing but the best." Takac said the band has yet to begin its search for a drummer. "This has all just happened. We haven't had a chance to resolve anything," he said. "We're not out to dis George or anything. I know he's not happy, but this was probably the best thing for all of us." |

He ran in the same circles as John and Robby when they were in college and worked his way up through radio, was a host of MRL, and then later became a VP at MTV (which is why the GGDs got some great features there back in the day) and is now President at VH1. Title: Re: Counting down to SFTROU one year at a time Post by i dont knO on Aug 16th, 2010, 6:39pm 1996 Name becomes a hit on the radio. The band plays a million shows and has to endure the Bush/No Doubt tour. The Goo Goo Dolls get their own (first) official day in Buffalo, 4/13/96. (Someone find me that quote about how touring with Bush is like getting a tooth removed through your ass.) Anyways, today's bootleg is a completely selfish one. It is Aladdin Theatre, Las Vegas, NV, 3/10/96. Setlist is: Naked Impersonality Fallin' Down Burnin' Up Eyes Wide Open Long Way Down Only One Hey Slave Girl Name Flat Top http://www.mediafire.com/?0gj8v9ejep77173 Story time! This concert is the first bootleg I ever heard. Minus performances of Iris on TV, this was the first live recording I heard of the band. Additionally, this bootleg is the first time I ever heard Robby sing. In 1998, WEDG (103.3 The Edge) would air two radio shows on Sunday nights. The first was Modern Rock Live (which you saw in 1995's post) and the second was 'Bootleg Edge', a 60-90 minute show where they aired 1-2 'official' bootleg concerts. The night I discovered 'Bootleg Edge', about a week after I discovered WEDG, one of the two featured bootlegs was this concert (minus the last two songs). I had just become interested in the GGDs (that story will come in 1998) so I listened to the audio recording and happened to throw in a cassette tape and record it*. At that point, I knew about 8 GGDs songs so this bootleg from the Aladdin Theatre was the first place I heard some of their songs (all of Robby's, Eyes Wide Open, Hey). In 1998, Youtube did not exist. High speed internet did not exist (for us normal people anyways). Google did not exist. So until I figured out 'oh, hey, I guess I could buy the albums!' (which was quite an expense for a 14 year old), all I had of this band was a handful of songs taped off the radio and this bootleg. I can recite the setlist from memory, I can remember every single lyric change up, I can tell you every word they say between songs. It's not a 'rare' bootleg and it's certainly not the longest show, but this is still my absolute favorite show recording I own and that is why it is today's download. (I also love recordings from this era because they are more or less the last time the band played as a three piece. They were certainly not as 'tight' as they became with two extra musicians, but, well, sometimes the 'fun' outweighs hitting every note) *If you download and listen to this show, there is a DJ who cuts in between segments. He will reference a show that was delayed for 3 days (the 2001 Buffalo show) and you will say 'But Nicole, that does not match up to your story at all from 1998! You liar!' This particular recording was made when WEDG re-aired this show in 2001 because 1. It aired the last two songs which were skipped in 1998 and 2. I wore the shit out of my 1998 original. This version was way nicer when I learned how to convert cassettes to digital a year later. There is also an 'official' cd of this show that was sent to radio stations that would not have a DJ talking. I've gone out of my way to not own it because I remember it more fondly with someone cutting in and calling 'Hey' Torn Apart |

Title: Re: Counting down to SFTROU one year at a time Post by i dont knO on Aug 17th, 2010, 7:31pm 1997 Dudes, 1997 sucked. I'm not going to make this one cheerful. The GGDs sued Metal Blade, WB sued the GGDs, personal lives were messes, John and Robby ran away to NYC for a while. Here's an article. There are some interesting parts, but it's just as depressing as the rest of 1997. The Post-Standard (Syracuse, NY) August 7, 1997 Thursday City Edition HEADLINE: Q&A: AN INTERVIEW WITH JOHNNY RZEZNIK OF THE GOO GOO DOLLS BYLINE: Ken Neijstrom The Goo Goo Dolls took time off from working on their new album to perform at the K-Rock-A-Thon in Vernon Downs July 13. The band's latest album, "A Boy Named Goo," is a multi-platinum seller that includes such hits as "Name," "Naked" and "Long Way Down." Their new single, "Lazy Eye," is featured on the "Batman and Robin" soundtrack. The Goo Goo Dolls, who are from Buffalo, have been performing together for 10 years and have made five albums. Recently I had a chance to interview lead singer/guitarist Johnny Rzeznik. Here are excerpts: hj: Were you shy when you were a teen-ager? Johnny R.: Yeah. I was pretty miserable. I didn't have a lot of friends. I basically kept to myself. hj: What's the strangest thing that ever happened to you at a concert? Johnny R.: Once I tried running across the stage but there was no more stage left. I fell off the stage into a crowd of people, and I knocked about a dozen people over. Everybody was just laying there on the floor. It was hysterical. I had this huge bruise on my hip for about two months. hj: What's your favorite song to play live that you've written? Johnny R.: "Naked." People seem to dig that song for its energy. hj: When did you start playing guitar, and did you ever take lessons? Johnny R.: I started playing guitar when I was 13. I took a couple of lessons. My dad would give me five bucks a week for the lessons, but I'd go out and spend it and tell him that I went to my lesson. My friends and I would get together and play, and that's how I really learned to play. hj: What bands did you grow up listening to? Johnny R.: Kiss, Cheap Trick, Replacements, Clash and the Sex Pistols. hj: Where do you find inspiration for the lyrics you write? Johnny R.: It's always different. Sometimes I just make up a story. Other times I draw from real life or other people's lives. People will talk to me, and I'll write a song. Sometimes I just throw words together because they sound cool coming out of your mouth. hj: How did you come up with the name Goo Goo Dolls? Johnny R.: That was a stupid, drunken nightmare. I was, like, 18 or 19 years old and drunk. hj: How often are you away from home, and what is it like being away that long? Johnny R.: I was home for about one month out of the past two years. I'm still readjusting to being home. I moved to New York for six months, and that became a drag. So I just came home to Buffalo, and I've been home for about a month. It's real good to be home. hj: How long does it take you to write a song, on average? Johnny R.: Three years (Laugh). Sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes three years. I still have songs that haven't been finished from five years ago. Generally I spend around six or seven months writing everything for the (album). hj: What's your worst memory from your high school years? Johnny R.: I was the only punk in my high school. It was all jocks and metal guys, and all my friends didn't go to that school. I just remember being in the bathroom, smoking a cigarette, and the biggest dude in the school came in and spat in my hair. He just spat in my hair, and I was like "What do I do? This guy will kill me." So I took it. What can you do when a 250-pound jock wants to kill you because he thinks you're gay because of your funny haircut? (My school) wouldn't let me graduate onstage because they said I didn't represent what a normal, healthy student at my high school should be like. The school was into squashing people's take on life. So they just handed me my diploma and told me I graduated. Then they asked me to come back and give a speech. I started writing it, but I politely declined. It was really weird, because it was a catharsis from my own high school experience. When I look back in retrospect, all the things that everybody told me that I was an idiot for doing were the things that paid off for me. I stuck to my own idea of the way I was supposed to live my life, and it worked for me. And that feels good now, because they were wrong and I was right about myself. hj: What advice would you give to a teen-ager who is having a tough time in high school like you did? Johnny R.: The only thing that matters is being true to yourself. You don't need people in your life that don't believe in you. It's better to be alone and have your integrity and freedom than to be a part of a group and deny yourself those things. hj: Has success changed you at all? Johnny R.: Not at all. I bought my wife a nice car, and I moved to a bigger apartment. It's really a passing thing. I'm not really into the fame-and-fortune thing. Everybody thinks that when you make a hit you have a lot of money, but it's not true, because I don't make a lot of money. It wasn't about the cash. I know that some day I'll wake up and it's not going to be there. hj: How's the new album coming along, and when do you think it will come out? Johnny R.: It's coming along great. It will probably come out in January. We are about to do a video for "Lazy Eye," which is on the Batman and Robin soundtrack. hj: Do you like doing videos? Johnny R.: No, I hate it. It is really uncomfortable. They stick cameras in your face, and they say, "All right, pretend you're singing." Then you do it, and you feel like an idiot. But I always make sure I really sing. When I'm singing and playing, I make sure I'm playing the right notes and actually singing. Even though they're not recording it, I feel so bogus standing there flapping my gums with nothing coming out. So I make myself sing. |

The GGDs are EVERYWHERE. Oh, and the GGDs get called sell outs. Today's bootleg: Electric Factory, Philadelphia, PA 11-6-98. Setlist is: Dizzy Long Way Down Lazy Eye Slide Black Balloon Bulletproof Naked Name January Friend Fallin' Down Full Forever Broadway Another Second Time Around Flat Top Iris There You Are Burnin' Up Hate This Place Two Days in February http://www.mediafire.com/?db9uz6kpn6lcwmv And a video to watch - This is Iris on Artist's Cut, a long forgotten MTV show where the musicians talk about their music videos. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v337/crookedrhyme/goo/?action=view¤t=artistcutiris.mp4 Story time! (I think we're to the point where people start having concert stories or 'first fan moments' so if you have anything for a particular, please jump in if you'd like) As I mentioned above, I became a fan of the GGDs in 1998. I first became aware of them in March 1998, when I heard Iris debut on Kiss 98.5, the major Buffalo Hot 100 station. I wasn't paying any sort of attention to the song and it just kind of hit me. The song made me feel this little jump in my stomach and I loved it. Until then (I was 14) I had never really cared about any artist or band. I just listened to the Hot 100 station that everyone else listened to. In August of 1998, for some reason, I switched my radio over to 103.3 The Edge, the 'alternative' station in Buffalo. All I really knew about the station was that it was 'freak music' according to my older sister. I just listened to it for a while and kind of liked what I heard, so I kept listening to it. It just happens that the weekend I switched my radio over to 103.3 was the weekend before the GGDs played a homecoming show in WNY. The Edge was having a big promotion and giving away tickets to the 10th caller every time they played a 'double edged set' of the GGDs. Essentially, they were playing two GGD songs back to back every hour for an entire weekend. I had just spent the last 4 months obsessing over two GGD songs (Iris and Name) and suddenly I was presented with this whole new collection of songs. I was big into taping things off the radio at that time so I started recording every time I guessed they were coming on. After that weekend, I listened to the tape I had made endlessly (I wore it out and had to make copies). The songs I heard had the same effect on me as Iris did - they made my stomach kind of jump and they had an effect on me that no other music ever had. Once a year, I pull the cassette tape out and hope it still plays. I play it the weekend of the Lewiston Art show every year because that is the weekend in 1998 that I truly became a fan of this band (that was this past weekend for me :D). The first songs I knew by the GGDs were: Lazy Eye, Name, We Are the Normal, Long Way Down, Fallin' Down, Flat Top, Don't Change, There You Are and Cuz You're Gone. Last month, I met up with some friends at a GGD concert. A friend of a friend said to me, "Okay, I've just got to ask you. Do you even like this band?!" And the answer is yes. They may do stupid shit that I hate and they may not be the same band I fell in love with one night when I was bored and lonely in my bedroom as a teenager, but they changed my life in 1998. I've consoled myself through the worst times of my life with this band, I've met amazing people because of this band, I've been on crazy adventures, I've learned an enormous amount about an awful lot of things because of this band, I give credit to this band for being computer literate and capable with technology (which lead me down an academic and professional path that I would not have gone down otherwise) and I am incredibly grateful their part in my life for the last 12 years. Yay, 1998. *All hate mail for the .gif above should be directed to the artist, Steph. Thank you, Steph, it is perfect. |

The GGDs appear on pretty much everything and have like 4 songs on the radio at the same time! And then their plane drops out of the sky! Well, I had plans to focus on the three Buffalo shows at Shea's in December 1999 by posting a bootleg, some interviews and the Road Home show from MTV. But technical difficulties much smaller than a plane crashing are preventing me from doing exactly what I want to do right now. Here is Shea's Performing Arts Center, Buffalo, NY 12/3/99. http://www.mediafire.com/?dyk93r78kg29zhq There may be more coming tomorrow, but no promises. :D |

Title: Re: Counting down to SFTROU one year at a time Post by Shannon on Aug 20th, 2010, 10:37am 1998 and Iris was when I first really became a fan of the Goos. I heard Iris on the radio and that was it! Little did I know that the band who performed Long Way Down & Name ... which I LOVED... on Beverly Hills 90210 was indeed the same band. I had loved the Goos since 90210 but really didn't know who they were until Iris. But as soon as I heard Iris I KNEW they were one in the same. I ran out and bought Dizzy but never saw them in concert that whole tour. Keep in mind I was 28 and a new mom. Concerts weren't really part of my life then. It wasn't until Gutterflower that I finally saw my first Goo show. And that was all it took. One live Goo show and I was hooked even more than before. After that show I found the message boards and WOG and I've been here ever since. And every time I see them live is just as exciting as that first show. |

Title: Re: Counting down to SFTROU one year at a time Post by i dont knO on Aug 21st, 2010, 10:07pm 2001 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/crookedrhyme/goo/eoac.jpg EOAC (or the mouthful WILAEOAC) is released! No one really understands why it exists! The GGDs probably get called sell outs! I think the thing that stands out the most about 2001 (GGD related or personally) is September 11, 2001. The GGDs played at multiple benefits to aid victims of terrorist attack. (Fun fact: John was the only performer to play at all three major benefits.) The videos are all very easy to find, so go find them. I am going for another selfish choice this year. The short story is that the GGDs played a benefit for the Food Bank of WNY 12/30/01 at Sheas Theatre. It aired on multiple local tv stations later on to raise additional money for the Food Bank. You can download it below (tagged, kinda small, sorry, best I can do right now) or find it on Youtube if youre not looking for that kind of commitment (search goo goo dolls home for the holidays 2001). http://www.mediafire.com/?ro2ngzol08r7m97 http://www.mediafire.com/?ga5f5kvod3rus4x The long story: For me, 2001 was the year of my first GGDs concert. I had been in love with the band for 3+ years, I was terribly bitter about not getting to go to their series of shows in Buffalo in 1999, and I was done waiting. They announced a benefit concert for the Food Bank of WNY to take place on 12/27/01 and I bought tickets (I actually had my dad and sister buy me tickets while I was at work. I was so very happy with my far left seats 18 rows back. How times have changed). We proceeded to have the mildest December in years. It did not snow at all and we were all sad at the possibility of a green Christmas and then we got a large snowstorm Christmas Eve. And then it snowed on Christmas. And then, the night of 12/26 all hell broke loose. In WNY, we woke up to a national disaster zone 12/27. And the snow continued to fall. The concert was postponed to 12/29. And the snow continued to fall. The concert was up in the air. By the end of 12/28, parts of WNY, including Buffalo, had 7 feet (2.13 m, non-Americans) of snow. The entire region had a driving ban and everything was shut down. Late on 12/29, they announced the concert for 12/30, which happened to be my 18th birthday. Between my house and Sheas, there were still multiple driving bans and major roads completely closed down. I had to work all day on 12/30 (I lived north of the city and we had recovered a bit more from our 5 feet of snow) and got hourly calls from my parents telling if driving bans had been lifted. The final driving ban got lifted at 4pm, I got out of work at 5pm, and off we (me, my sister and her two friends) went to Buffalo. We encountered closed highways, walls of snow and multiple car accidents. We parked in some strange parking lot illegally and ran to the theatre. Delays aside, the show mostly went off as planned. Most other acts on the bill managed to still be available. Ones I remember off the top of my head are Lance Diamond, C.O. Jones (Dave Schulzs band), The Juliana Theory, Spirit of the West, Velour, Universal Honey (who got seriously booed) and a choir (lol, random). The only band who could not make the rescheduled date was The Sheila Divine, which made me sad because I like them a lot and they mostly broke up shortly after. I recall there being some controversy after this show because the GGDs did not play a full set. I had been aware they would not be playing a full set so I did not care. I thought it actually spoke volumes of the GGDs that they did not take a larger portion of the show when there were so many acts on the bill. The show was primarily about raising money for the food bank and the GGDs did a lot to promote the show and acquire items for the silent auction and they didnt try to make it a show all about them headlining in Buffalo. Though this show was not a typical GGD concert experience, the events leading up to it and finally seeing the band for the first time made this a very memorable experience and an awesome unexpected birthday gift. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/crookedrhyme/other/snowwwwwwwwwww.jpg |

Title: Re: Counting down to SFTROU one year at a time Post by Shannon on Aug 23rd, 2010, 11:12am I totally remember the BLUE TARP!!! I sadly don't remember the My Pretty Seahorse incident. I have a funny story about Gutterflower. It came out the same day I had a dental appt. to have numerous cavities either filled or redone. My dentist knew I was nervous and happened to have a walkman/CD player. So I grabbed Gutterflower out of the car. I listened to it during the whole appt and it helped calm me. I DO NOT like the dentist. I have major dental phobia. It's not natural. Too many dental traumas as a child. Anyway, while listening to Gutterflower during my appt. It was then that I realized that the Goos had two different singers. Imagine my confusion as I'm lying there thinking John is the only singer and Robby's song pops up. LOL So anyway, Gutterflower got me though that appointment and to this day it's still one of my favorite CDs. And Nicole ... 2001 .... HOLY CRAP! That's a LOT of snow. I don't remember snow of that significance here so I'm guessing it skipped us and dumped all on you. Thank you for taking it too ;) |

Title: Re: Counting down to SFTROU one year at a time Post by Shannon on Aug 25th, 2010, 10:58am 2004! Yay! As Nicole mentioned I attended the Private Show that was before the big concert. We were going on vacation so I couldn't attend the big day. In addition to meeting Nicole for the first time at the Private Show ... and many times since then ;D I also met the Goo Goo Dolls for the first time. At this show we waited in a really long line to meet them. And had our pictures taken in groups of 10. I remember being so nervous. I can't think of a time I was more nervous. By the time it was our turn in line to meet them I couldn't think. My mind was blank. It was so fast. I just remember shaking all their hands and telling them it was nice to meet them. I never bothered to say my name. Of course as soon as we were finished my brain returned to me and I thought of a million things I could've said. Oh well :-/ It took me until 2010 until I finally got the whole meet and greet right. I can actually meet them now and not lose my mind. ;D I too made it onto the LIB CD/DVD. I'm in the other/extra scenes. I believe it's Wednesday. Give a Little bit plays and you see a policeman on a horse. BAM ... next scene is me. I'm holding up a banner with my friend Gail. She's the one with the long blonde hair. She made the banner and had a bunch of fans from shows she'd gone to sign it. She also had us sign it while we waited in line for the show. She threw it up onto the stage during the Private Show. Last I heard Robby's parents have it. Not sure if that's true but that's what Gail was told. |

They perform at a Hurricane Katrina benefit, win an award and perform at the RMAs and promote Better Days. They took a little trip to Mexico to play a WTMX radio station event in October. Here's a download of their appearance. http://www.mediafire.com/?baeu9vb8xa9b1r3 |

That was a fun surprise, so I guess I did excited about something in 2006... :P* *I have nothing against Counting Crows, srsly |

Title: Re: Counting down to SFTROU one year at a time Post by Lamb_Chop on Aug 26th, 2010, 9:35pm I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who doesn't like LLI. My friend that I went to see the GGD concert with was a big fan of that album and she's not even a casual fan. Her favorite song by the band is James Dean so that proves to you that she knows more than just the basic songs... But yeah, she's a big DutG through LLI fan while I'm a fan of Superstar Car Wash and A Boy Named Goo. |

Title: Re: Counting down to SFTROU one year at a time Post by Lamb_Chop on Aug 28th, 2010, 1:42pm 2007 was the year I got into the Goo Goo Dolls! My older brother had been listening to them years prior so I was familiar with their songs. One day I was putting music on my new mp3 player and I listened to Slide over and over again. I'm not sure what it was that caused me to fall in love with that song, but something triggered in my mind. That summer the Goos were coming to Kansas City and I so desperately wanted to go. At the time, I was seeing someone and I asked if she wanted to go with me and she basically alluded that she'd only go if I paid for her ticket. I was so desperate to go that I considered it. All I have to say is, it's a good idea I didn't end up buying tickets because we broke up a few weeks later. I was always disappointed that I didn't go to that show, but three years later I got to see the Goos finally! It all worked out for the best. Fun fact: I got up for Homecoming Queen my senior year of high school and they do this formal assembly where you and your date walk down a "red carpet" type thing in your formal wear. Well anyway, each of the candidates got to pick an entering song and an exiting song. My entering song was "Slide". :) |

GHV2 is released! GGDs play the UK and a couple US shows. They pretend they're making an album but instead just give us one song, Real. Real was originally released as part of the US Olympics soundtrack. The first music video had clips with US athletes. Here is the original music video and an Olympic interview. http://www.mediafire.com/?3jzs08tpmcckqt4 http://www.mediafire.com/?73qdx9zkvpaqgk3 (Please let me know if these did not work. Mediafire was being mean.) Personally, 2008 was a lot of fun. I stepped into a chatroom on a whim, made some friends, and ended up on a lot of wild rides because of it. Oh, also, I got to see Another Second Time Around the first time it was played in a longggg time. :D |

Title: Re: Counting down to SFTROU one year at a time Post by i dont knO on Aug 29th, 2010, 7:49pm 2009 ALMOST THERE, GUYS. 2009. The GGDs made SFTROU v1.0. They entertained us with a generous number of studio videos. They played an ice skating show. Wait, what? Obviously, first of all, studio cam videos are an awesome thing to go back and watch again. Second, if anyone missed it the first time around, here is Improv Ice. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CMCKY09A http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PWI6TSA4 This is about 2 gb total. It's the big version I sent Ronnie at the beginning of the year so you may already have this. (The next two days will be 2010. Tomorrow will be 'past' 2010 and Tuesday will be 'just happened a couple hours ago' 2010 if all goes as planned.) |

I just wanted to say thanks again for the credit on the 44 minute SSCW demo reel. It took me quiet a bit of searching, and ALOT of trading to get that. I figured it was just something that could not just stay out of the community. There are alot of hidden little gems in that real. I have some other rare demos too, there are lots of variations of SSCW, but I have ABNG demos, and some first release demos. If there is interest, I can put some packages together and share them on here as well. -Steve |
