Title: Rate the Singles
Post by sympathy_0 on Jun 21st, 2010, 10:32am
I was thinking about what my favorite singles are, and think it would be fun if we all put them in order! :)

Here is mine:

1. Sympathy
2. Big Machine
3. Here is Gone
4. Black Balloon
5. We Are The Normal
6. Broadway
7. Stay With You
8. Long Way Down
9. Name
10. Dizzy
11. Naked
12. Iris
13. Slide
14. Before It's Too Late
15. Real
16. Let Love In
17. I'm Awake Now
18. There You Are
19. Better Days
20. Only One
21. Give A Little Bit
22. Lazy Eye
23. Flat Top

The last 8 or so were really difficult. It was choosing the lesser of many evils, haha. This list is also subject to change. :D

6. Long Way Down
7. Lazy Eye

Some of the songs from the midway down are ranked lower simply due to radio overplay and just hearing it too often.

Are we listing which songs we like the best or which songs are best suited for being singles?

Title: Re: Rate the Singles

I did it which I liked best. It would be cool if we all did it that way too though! There are a few songs that should have been singles instead of some of the ones that were.. Can you say Let Love In?

1 Iris (JUDGE ME.  I DARE YOU.)
2 Long Way Down
3 Here Is Gone
4 Broadway
5 Naked
6 We Are the Normal
7 Big Machine
8 Name
9 Lazy Eye
10 Flat Top
11 Slide
12 Black Balloon
13 Dizzy
14 Only One
15 There You Are
16 Real
17 Sympathy
18 Stay With You
19 Before Its Too Late
20 Better Days
21 Let Love In
22 GALB

(I don't think I'm Awake Now was actually a proper single.  Also, I have a hard time putting B Sides into album track lists so I'd leave it out anyways.)

If we're doing it by which ones were the most popular singles with others then this would be my order:

1. Iris (duh)
2. Name
3. Slide
4. Better Days
5. Stay With You
6. Broadway
7. Let Love In
8. Black Balloon
9. Here is Gone
10. Sympathy
11. Big Machine (why wasn't there a video for this one?)
12. Before It's Too Late
13. Long Way Down
14. Give a Little Bit
15. Dizzy
16. Naked
17. Real
18. Flat Top
19. Only One
20. We Are the Normal
21. Lazy Eye
22. I'm Awake Now
23. There You Are

Notice the highest ranked are the ones from their original Greatest Hits. It's a shame that people who only really like the Goos for Iris don't listen to their older stuff. Superstar Car Wash is epic.

Why was LLI a bad single?

As far as what should have been a single, I think Falling Down and Cuz You're Gone would have both been better picks than WATN.

I didn't mean the song Let Love In specifically, more or less the album in general. The only one that was a good choice was Stay With You. Without you here would have had great success (I think) and would have taken them out of the Iris bubble. I think Can't Let It Go would have been better, aswell.

I won't list all of the songs I think were the best singles, but they got it right in DUTG and Gutterflower.

That's a lot of singles. I'm very impressed that the goo's can still be around for so long and have respect.

I'd have to agree with you, only I think Better Days has done pretty well too. I do think Without You Here should have been released as a single.

With Gutterflower, I always wondered why Big Machine didn't have a video. I think What a Scene would have done well being a single also.

Anything from Dizzy Up the Girl would have done well.

I know this isn't legit evidence, but my sister really does not like Goo. She likes exactly 3 songs of theirs, two of them being Iris and Here is Gone. The other she loves is Without You Here. She listens to top 40 stuff (Eminem, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, etc) and she absolutely loves WYH. It's one of her favorite songs of all time and has gotten all her friends to love it too, who also love top 40. I think it would have been HUGE.

They probably didn't have much money to shoot a video for it. Here is Gone's video was pretty elaborate, and Sympathy's video wasn't really at all.

Big Machine doesn't have a video? What have I been watching on VH1, then?

Thanks for posting that, I had kind of forgotten about that video...Personally I find videos where bands are just playing their songs to be pretty boring...I love story videos that have a few band clips...Black Balloon is my fave and Lazy Eye, Naked, Iris and Slide are really cool too...

That's not a music video.  It was filmed as a 'live' performance for UPN, hence the giant UPN logo.

Big Machine does not have a proper music video.  The closest thing to a video it had was the Storytellers clip, which VH1 played as its video during video blocks.

I thought something was fishy about that video. Wasn't that UPN video somehow used to promote Buffy or something like that?

Yeah I had seen that video but didn't think it was legit due to the giant UPN logo. There was another video on YouTube where someone played What A Scene over that video and people actually thought it was the official video for What A Scene even though Johnny's mouth wasn't matching the words.

Relating to the videos, why wasn't I'm Awake Now's video not on GHV2? Or Give a Little Bit or Better Days?

Title: Re: Rate the Singles
Post by i dont knO on Jun 26th, 2010, 8:05am
Just guesses, but not in any way official answers.

I'm Awake Now - It has movie footage.  They probably would have had to give a percentage to whoever owns the rights to the movie footage.  (If you watch the Iris video, it is edited with no movie footage.  It's not the original music video, probably for the same reason.  Also, Before It's Too Late is missing.  It also has movie footage.  Coincidence?)

Give A Little Bit - The songwriter, Roger Hodgson, became very difficult with anyone covering his songs shortly after the GGDs recorded GALB.  He had videos (covers and his own live performances) pulled off Youtube and it was probably just a pain in the ass dealing with him.  GALB was originally slated for GHV1 and then GHV2 and never made it to either one.

Better Days - I'm not so sure on this one.  It was one of two things.  1.  They HATED the video.  They had it re-edited because they were not happy with the first cut and even after the second one, John said negative things about it.  It's possible that they hated it so much that they didn't want it included.  2.  They left it off to encourage people to buy LLI L&I, which had this video and SWY on it.  People wanting to 'complete the set' would have to buy another album.  I'm inclined to believe the first one... or they just forgot about it... weirder things have happened in the GGD world.

Yeah. The Better Days video was really bad! The guys looked like wood nymphs or something.

I loved the Stay With You music video though! Here is gone is my favorite though.

Thanks for the explanations! Isn't Lazy Eye also from a movie though (Batman and Robin)? Did they edit footage out of that video or was it like that originally?

Title: Re: Rate the Singles
Post by i dont knO on Jun 26th, 2010, 11:14pm
There was never any movie footage in Lazy Eye.

Also, Long Way Down has two versions - one with no movie footage and one with Twister footage.  I'm too lazy to check right now, but I believe they used the non-movie version.

I love how that song is in Twister. Such a classic.
