Goo Goo Dolls frontman wants fans to embrace the new material
By Kevin Coffey

Feed the hungry, meet the band
Summers almost here.
You can tell because the grass grove in Council Bluffs, known as the Stir Concert Cove, will be glowing with lights, music and cheering fans on a regular basis.
Kicking off the action are the megapopular pop-rock balladeers in the Goo Goo Dolls.
Since Long Way Down, Iris and Slide, the Goos Johnny Rzeznik, Robby Takac and Mike Malinin have been lighting up pop radio with song after song.

Before heading to Stir, lead singer and guitarist Rzeznik called The World-Herald to talk about the bands upcoming album and success and to beat up on his bandmates.

Q. When are we going to see a new album?
A. The new albums coming out in July. It took so long because we took a little time off from each other. We did the worst thing that any band can possibly do: We built our own recording studio. That was a clear waste of about eight months of time. And then we sat around in the recording studio messing around with the buttons and knobs and then we looked over our shoulders and had been (messing) around for a year and a half.
It took six months to write the songs, and then we went in the studio and did the album finished it up in five or six months.
Then we sat down and listened to it. Then we re-cut a bunch of stuff, wrote a couple new songs and played around with a couple different producers.

Q. Is there a theme to the new album?
A. Just about people sort of coping with their own humanity and keep feeling their own humanity during a really difficult period in the world. Were in a really bad economy and two wars that look like theyre never gonna end, and the sort of alienation that I seem to feel a lot of people going through.

Q. Will we hear some of those new songs at the concert?
A. Definitely. Were doing four or five of the new songs. Its always interesting to do before its released. People hear it on the radio or go get the album. Theyre not quite sure how to react.

Q. Do you ever get sick of playing Iris or Long Way Down?
A. (Pauses) I think if somebodys coming to see you play and they spend 35 or 40 bucks or whatever, they want to hear those songs.
I really want people to embrace the new material, but those songs are little pieces of peoples lives. Everybodys got a story about those songs. They want to come out and enjoy them and see them live.

Q. How do you think the Goo Goo Dolls have been able to remain successful as a band?
A. I think weve learned to respect each others boundaries. We know when to ignore each other and avoid each other. We know when to stick together. Its definitely a marriage.
On this tour, so far and its only been about a month and a half Robby and I havent had a knock-down, drag-out brawl.

Q. Does that happen often?
A. It happened every once in awhile. Ultimately, you laugh about it. Weve rolled around on the ground smacking each other. You get up and you spit some blood and then you go onstage and play the show.

Q. Is there a question you get in interviews that you wish you were never asked again?
A. Howd you guys get the name of the band? I really wish I would have had five more minutes with that one. That was one big mistake. How can you take (Goo Goo Dolls) seriously?

I want to see the show where they're spitting blood.  Does that make me a bad person?

I am not shocked.  When you are friends, live together a large portion of your life in a tiny area, are co-workers and business partners for 24 years, you are bound to try to kill each other a couple times.
