Ahh! The suspense is killing me!

How were the new songs? What were they called? Can you compare them to anything from previous albums?

And most importantly.. VIDEO?!

Good stuff first - They played FOREVER.  They weren't very talkative but they all seemed pretty happy and well rested.  I loved getting to hear some new songs even though it's really weird standing there watching but not being able to sing along.  At least John and Robby understand that no one knows the words to the new songs and don't try to make the crowd sing along (Looking at you, the Rocket Summer).

Bad stuff - Okay, seriously?  I love the Goos and they put on a great show and I really don't have anything bad to say about the band but the new set design is ATROCIOUS.  The back drop is 'faux rock' which is just kind of a spongy grey piece of fabric and all of the light stands have little matching spongy grey jackets on them.  The drum riser is see through with some, like, tulle in it to make it look vaguely rocky.  It does not make or break the show for me, it's just ugly.  I was in the front row so maybe it looks better from far away with the lights.  I'll hope that's the case.

Weird - John has 3 microphones now... in addition to Robby's 1.  There are two old fashioned style microphones on the sides of the stage.  John will occasionally hop from one to the other.  It's an upgrade from the flailing and microphone stand dragging from the LLI tours, but I don't get it.  They didn't seem to work as well as the regular microphones and sometimes John's voice would drop out when he used them.  Robby did not touch the extra microphones..

The crowd was awesome.  I expected that a college GA show would either be lame or just very pushy.  My friend and I settled into line and had fun with the people around us.  The 'security' let us in slowly.  We claimed a spot on the rail and no one got pushed around.  Where we were, you could hear people singing along to all of the songs (minus the new ones).  It was pretty cool hearing a crowd sing Flat Top.

The Rocket Summer was alright.  You could tell the lead guy was really excited to be there and was trying hard.  it went on longer than I needed it to though.  Spoilers: Lead guy will play an entire song by himself using guitars, bass, and drums on a loop.  He will also disappear from the stage and appear in the middle of the crowd to sing a Yeah Yeah Yeahs cover.

If you're attending a college show, here's a little info on 'security'.  'Security' is going to be frat boys.  'Staff' is sorority girls.  They will think they are hugely important and try to enforce no camera rules.  They will ALL go into the security pit during the Rocket Summer and dance around like idiots and text and take pictures and balance clip boards on their faces and be wildly unprofessional and you will be embarrassed for them.  Then, before the Goos come on stage, Security Mike will haul all of them (minus the actual security frat boys) out of the security pit and everything will be right with the world.  Just be patient. :D

To answer the VIDEO?? question, here is a Security Mike story:

'Security' was enforcing a no camera rule, which naturally means 'smuggle it in anyways'.  Unfortunately, even once we were inside, 'security' was stopping people from taking pictures.  Since I was on the rail and in front of Security Mike for a large portion of the concert, I turned video on to record audio and just kind of hid the camera behind the rail because I would rather have audio than nothing at all.

Anyways, right before they did 'Home', John said they were going to play new songs and asked us to record them if we had cameras.  John trumps frat boys, so I started taking video.  I recorded 'Home' and then started to record 'One Night' and no one really cared.  Then, I see Security Mike kind of staring at my camera and he walks over and looks at the screen of my camera.  I turned it to let him see it and he kind of smirks and looks at me like he wants me to stop recording.  So I ask him if I can continue and he kind of waves his hand in a 'you shouldn't be doing that' sort of way and walks away.  I put the camera down because I will listen to Security Mike.  A minute later he comes back over to me and goes:

'I have the same camera.'  He then does more of a 'I don't care what you do' wave and walks to the other side of the stage.

THANKS MIKE.  TALKING ABOUT CAMERAS WHILE NEW SONGS ARE BEING PLAYED IS EXCELLENT TIMING.  From there, I just filmed whatever I wanted.  Can't wait to see what my video looks like from that exchange.

Awesome review Nicole! I somehow missed that you were going to this show so I was very surprised to get your "Name" call.

My Ann Arbor show is in a month. I can't wait now.

Also, the show was so fabulous all of my electronic devices started malfunctioning. My camera zoom broke (briefly) and my phone is frozen on a screen (still is).

Now I Hear is being uploaded now. Someone has already uploaded Home if you dig for it..

Edit

From there, you can get to 4 of the 5 new ones, Sympathy and Flat Top.  (If you listen in One Night, you can hear the Security Mike camera talk.  LOL).

Ha! I toldya they should've used "the blurry picture" as a backdrop, lol...

Thanks for the review, Nicole. I also got a good laugh out of your first post...it's 3AM, you guys ain't gettin' a review now.
So true.

I was thinking about the microphone stands "thing". I wonder if it's done that way so John can go to any part of the stage to sing and no one section of the crowd has nothing much happening in front of them during the show (ie: the non-Robby side of the stage). It might be a good idea, but I guess it's also more equipment that could malfunction too.

Glad you enjoyed the show, and thanks again.

I was on the non Robby side last night for the first time (I usually end up center or Robby's side) and I've got to tell you the empty side gets WAY more action than I had expected, solo-wise.  John didn't do a whole lot with the extra microphones, just a verse here and there before running back to the main microphone.  He'd also pull out the main microphone and walk around with it.  They don't do anything (one glows blue and the other glows red though).

Drew:
No idea.  Between the drive and lack of sleep and GA-ness and trying to record and enjoy the show and dodge security, being at a concert is not an excellent way to judge new songs.  Watching videos today, I think I like Home more than One Night, but Sweetest Lie and As I Am are still winning for now.  I really cannot judge Robby's song because his vocal mix was so low and my video is the only one to surface so far and it's not very good.

Also, I forgot to add this to this review or the NYE one, but when the As I Am solo kicks in, it's so loud you feel like the building is going to cave in.  Each time I hear it live, As I Am wins me over a little more.

Ok. Thank you so much for the review! I'm so confused with the name changes I'm not 100% on who posted the review.. I think Drew or nmf?  Haha.

Out of all the new songs we have heard:

Sweetest Lie
As I Am
Nightmares and Dreams
Home
Now I Hear
One Night/Who We Are (From the video's I have watched I guess these two are the same song? Maybe someone labelled them wrong).

I think I like Home and Nightmares and Dreams the best.. Robby's song sounded really good too. I'm not sure just yet how much I like the other three

They played Flat Top?! YAY! That's one of my favorites! I do wish they'd play some of their stuff from before A Boy Named Goo though...

Another trick (and one I use often as my memory is horrible) just click on the username to view the profile. It will show you the original registration name  ;) and walla you can see who it is  ;D

They played that at THIS show.  And they are welcome to play it at every show for the rest of my life.

I have Real stuck in my head every day of my life.  If I try to think of a new song, the only thing that ever pops into my head is 'CAN YOU FEEEEEL REAL LIKE YOU AREEEEEE?'

To keep this on topic (LOL), I kinda like how Real and BITL got the axe.  I don't completely hate either of them, but I'd rather something better take their places.
