Title: NYE Detroit 12-31-09
Post by nmf016 on Jan 1st, 2010, 12:33am
Awesome show.  Lots of fun.  The Sweetest Lie and As I Am performed.  More to come when I have my own computer and am in my own state.

Met up with Shannon and Lauren and Tara.  Ladies, feel free to add your reviews and pictures here.

Okay. It looks like I get to go first.

I dragged the hubby along to the show. It was NYE so he had to come ;) (He's been to many a Goo show) Since he had to work on New Year's Eve Day we had to wait until he got off work to head to the casino. But we arrived shortly before 4 and met up with Lauren, Tara, Nicole, Steph and Amanda. It was my first time meeting Steph and Amanda and it was very enjoyable hanging out with them. Hopefully I'll get to see them at other shows in the future. We grabbed a bite to eat and off to the GA line to wait.

The GA line initially looked like it was going to be a huge cluster f*ck. But the casino got it together and ended up organizing the line nicely. We waited in that line from about 5 until 7:30 when they let us in the doors. I have to say that Sound Board is an awesome GA venue. The GA pit itself was pretty big. Then there was an elevated section...level with the stage... that wrapped all the way around both sides and the back of the venue. Nicole, the hubby and I hung out there and had a straight shot of the stage with no head obstructions. Steph and Amanda chose to go down to the pit and Lauren and Tara were in the balcony. Here's our view of the stage:

Here's a view of the sold out venue and Lauren and Tara in the balcony(even though you can't see them they're there):

Sadly, I only had my iPhone to take pictures. The misinformed woman at the box office told me no cameras under any circumstance. They will be confiscated. However, that was completely untrue and everyone had their cameras. Mine sat in Lauren's room :( So nothing but iPhone pictures from me. Sorry.

The Gelheads opened. I wasn't really impressed. Their music seemed to lack melody and just left me feeling like it was noise. The one slow song was pretty nice but that was the only song that stood out to me.

Now for the show. The Goos opened with Sweetest Lie and it rocked. Here's a few pics:

They played, in no particular order, Nicole can help me with this ... Black Balloon, Slide, Acoustic #3, Name, Iris, Long Way Down, Naked, Broadway, Dizzy, Big Machine, Here is Gone, What A Scene, Tucked Away, Stay with You, Let Love In, Feel the Silence, Without You Here, We'll Be Here(When You're Gone), Become, Another Second Time Around. I know I'm forgetting some. Oh and As I am. John said it was about someone who worked hard all his life and lost his job and how the love of his family got him through. Totally gave new meaning to that song for me. I thought they did an awesome job of mixing older and newer songs. They played for almost 2 hours straight.

John was very chatty and in an excellent mood. He was really funny and cracking jokes all night. He was talking about how he has a new "iPhone thingy" and he took a picture of the crowd and said he'd post it. He posted it later on his twitter page. I took a picture of him taking a picture of the crowd ... lol

Right before the new year the countdown timer turned off. John was singing Acoustic #3 (I have video I'm going to post) just before the new year. When he finished he looked at the time and quickly says "3-2-1 Happy New Year". Then he said let's pretend and we did the countdown all over since the first one sucked. It was really funny. I thought it also seemed like John played the guitar a lot more than I've ever seen him. It was really nice. Reminded me of the older days when he played all his stuff.

After the show we all visited for a little while. Then the hubby and I took off. Poor guy had been up since 5am. Plus, after standing for nearly 8 hours we were whooped. It was a great night and one of the best Goo shows I've ever seen. It was so fun to ring in the new year hanging with my hubby, friends I rarely see, and Goo. My one and only major complaint was that the venue allowed smoking. It started out okay because it was ventilated fairly well. But as the night went on it got worse and worse. It was hard to breathe after awhile and boy did I stink when we left.

Setlist, in order, was:

The Sweetest Lie (with very pretty intro music)
Long Way Down
Feel The Silence
Stay With You
Black Balloon
Big Machine
Here Is Gone
Slide
Without You Here
Real
Name
Another Second Time Around
As I Am
Dizzy
Naked (drum intro)
Become
Tucked Away
We'll Be Here (When You're Gone)
Acoustic #3
Countdown to the New Year (2x)
Broadway (with the long John solo)
Iris
Let Love In

John was in rare form and that usually makes for a better show. He was very chatty and interacted with the crowd a lot. He signed an autograph for someone mid-show just because he had never done it before and took pictures of the crowd, as Shannon mentioned. Someone threw a bag of grapes at the stage and John made the security guard below him check it out. The poor security guard got picked on a lot. Robby put a NYE hat on him at some point and the security guard thought it was John, who was terrified he was going to get beat down. Later, John put a NYE hat on Robby while he was singing (John was kind enough to shake the filth off it first). The countdown to the New Year was screwed up because someone took away the clock that was side stage and the TV only had a tiny clock that John couldn't see. Oh well, as John said, now we can tell people that "The Goo Goo Dolls wrecked our NYE".

I managed to take video of pretty much the entire concert because security did not care at all and I had no one in front of me. I am having some serious technical difficulties due to MOV files and Windows 7 and Nero destroying my life, but eventually some/all of it will get shared, I hope.

As it always seems to be, there was no real organization initially, but the venue staff really got their shit together before letting everyone in and it was peaceful. Aside from the fact that people could, and did, smoke inside, I loved the venue. I totally enjoyed hanging out on the elevated side rail instead of fighting the drunks in the pit. It made for great people watching. I also loved watching the staff bring out NYE hats for everyone and pass them out while the show was going on (Thanks again, Joel, for capturing me a hat :D ).

Shannon, Lauren, Tara, I loved seeing you all again. I hope it won't be another 2.5-3 years until I get to see you ladies again! :D

Here is a link to The Sweetest Lie.  From there, you can find other videos I have posted from the show.

Oh it was such an amazing night! New Years Rocked!! I loved how John interacted with the audience, especially the asian from chicago! HA! That was awesome! :)

The balcony view was great! I could see faces, and the smoke was quite bothersome, I reeked of it as well.

It was great to see all of you guys again! Hopefully again really soon! You never know if I'll be gutsy enough to make a trip out on my own! :)

AHH! Thanks for the rewvies! I swear someday I will make it down to the US to see a show with you all! I hope they come back to Canada sometime! - Although where I am going to college now is very close to seattle, just a ferry ride away! It really makes me miss when I saw the Goo's. When I found out they were coming to Halifax I nearly died the first time!

Thanks again! :)
