Title: Song Meanings Post by sympathy_0 on Nov 7th, 2009, 6:22pm I am realizing now how late this post is coming. Not late I guess, just.. Well yes, late. It has recently hit me that I don't actually know what a lot of the goo goo dolls songs are about, which is completely my fault. I think it is because when I started to love them, I was too young to even think about this. Now that I am older I would really love to know (in as much depth as possible), what their songs mean. If you think you have a particularly good answer for any song, please post it! I would like to know what everything off gutterflower and DUTG, and maybe even Let Love In. Sympathy, Here is Gone, etc. I feel like a fool. But what can I say? Story of my life. |

Title: Re: Song Meanings Post by DWG on Nov 7th, 2009, 7:37pm In a nutshell, the meaning of life is deeply mixed with the philosophical and religious conceptions of existence, consciousness, and happiness, and touches on many other issues, such as symbolic meaning, ontology, value, purpose, ethics, good and evil, free will, conceptions of God, the existence of God, the soul, and the afterlife. Scientific contributions are more indirect; by describing the empirical facts about the universe, science provides some context and sets parameters for conversations on related topics. An alternative, human-centric, and not a cosmic/religious approach is the question "What is the meaning of my life?" The value of the question pertaining to the purpose of life may coincide with the achievement of ultimate reality, if that is believed by one to exist. Naaaaaaahhhhhh...just kidding. I swiped that off the wikipedia entry for "meaning of life". :P |

Title: Re: Song Meanings Post by [Joelage] on Nov 8th, 2009, 7:15am There are two ways of seeing it i guess. You could see it in 'how it meant to the writer' or 'What it means to you' The first would be a little harder in some songs, as the goos did mention that some songs are very cryptic, whilst at the same time, some aren't. |

Yeah, this is very true. There are a lot of songs that they've explained their reasoning behind though, and some that are pretty easy to figure out (Iris, for example, is very literal in the context of the movie... I think seeing it actually kinda ruined the song for me!) Do you have the interview where they go through all of the Gutterflower songs and explain them a little? I think I uploaded that a while back, so I can try and find it if you'd like :) As for personal interpretations... those are going to be all over the place, haha. This site (songmeanings.net) (http://www.songmeanings.net/artist/view/songs/140/) is a good place to start for that kind of thing if it interests you. I haven't read any of the GGD pages but it looks like there's a lot on there. Some peoples' interpretations tend to be a little, um, far-fetched; but there's some interesting ones every so often! |

Title: Re: Song Meanings Post by Shannon on Nov 9th, 2009, 10:36am Somewhere in my vault of "stuff" I have songs meanings from an old interview. I'll have to see if I can find it. I think you may also find some stuff on the WOG site from their older stuff. Here's a link to the FAQ section of the WOG site. It discusses the meaning to some of the songs but not all. http://www.musicfanclubs.org/googoodolls/misc/faq.htm |
