Maybe it's Goo Goo Dolls lead singer/songwriter John Rzeznik's Buffalo-bred, blue collar songwriting sensibility, but all of these songs � from worldwide smash hits like "Iris," "Name," "Slide," "Here is Gone," "Black Balloon" and "Broadway" to fan favorites like "Acoustic #3" and "Without You Here" � sound as if they were written expressly for the bluegrass genre. A lot of the credit for that seamless metamorphosis goes to Iron Horse, the five-man, Muscle Shoals, Alabama-based bluegrass outfit that reinterpreted these rock radio classics.

But the genesis for A Boy Named Blue came from Malinin himself, who has long counted the 1962 release, Flatt & Scruggs at Carnegie Hall, among his all-time favorite records. Up until recently, it was the only bluegrass record in his collection. After becoming a fan of Pickin' On Modest Mouse, another CMH release, the drummer contacted the label, and one thing led to another. Hearing Iron Horse's freewheeling take on the Goo Goo Dolls' songs sealed the deal for Malinin.

"I was really excited when I heard these recordings," says Malinin, who wound up contributing percussion to some of the tracks. "It was almost scary how well John's songs hold up in a completely different genre. The point is that great music transcends genre. It's great to be in a band that got'picked on.' I couldn't be happier."

I'm really curious to hear these songs. I really like certain types of Bluegrass ... especially Allison Krauss and Union Station.

I just heard it on the web...it's a piece of crap. I think it's by the same exact guy that did the other tribute. I'm sick of people like that who are trying to make money by covering artists, regardless of how horrible they are at it.

If you listened to the samples on Amazon, then you actually heard the original tribute from that crappy band Soft. Amazon has the wrong thing up as samples.

You can hear bluegrass BITL on iTunes right now. Also, if you go to Iron Horse's website, you can hear a lot of samples of other albums they have put out.

Also, Mike is obviously supportive of this project since he initiated the project and wrote the liner notes. I think that puts this album in a different category than the Soft tribute, etc.

I saw several BITLs on iTunes. There was one from the Pickin' On Series. Is that the right one?

*If I did acquire it, it was in a totally legal manner on my part. Can't necessarily say the same about the other party...

I definitely enjoy some songs more than others. I feel like a couple of the songs kind of lose their meaning in the 'new' versions, but the good ones make up for those. My favorites right now are Broadway, Here Is Gone and Iris (which I would believe was actually intended for bluegrass if I didn't know better). I don't love Acoustic #3 or Sympathy. And it's been proven that even bluegrass can't save Without You Here from being an awful song.

Fun fact: 'Drink' and 'hell' are not in their respective songs. The verses are changed to omit them. No problem singing about heroin use though. :D
