The song is called "Real".  It's only a clip, but OMG I love it!!!

Holy unintelligible lyrics...

You read the news
Turns you inside out
And everybody feels the same as you
In uncertain times, the uncertain rules apply
Caught in the blind spot of real and _______ (love?)
Can you feel real like you are/were
Can you feel me like the way I feel ?????
And the biggest chance that we can take
Is open arms and wide awake
Hold me now, so we can feel alive tonight

I thought it was "fear and love."
At least, that's what I put in my sig everywhere :P

I think it's one of the prettiest things they've written in ages.

Your guess is as good as mine... I usually don't have any problems deciphering Goo lyrics, but this one isn't very clear to me.

I had a hard time, too. I didn't even try the chorus, so kudos to you.
*shrug* Maybe in a few weeks, the lyrics will be up on the main site...Uhm...If they still do that. I dunno, I haven't poked around the main site since before LLI came out :P

EDIT: Okay, I gave it another good listen, and this is what I came up with (basically the same as your's, but not)

You read the news
Turns you inside out
And everybody feels the same as you

In uncertain times
The uncertain rules apply

Here's where it gets tricky. The next bit is definitely "Caught in the blind spot of.." but those last three words are a little weird. In the final word, you can here quite clearly a V sound at the end, which leads me to believe it's "love". I think it would make the most sense for "fear" to be paired with love, but I don't hear an F sound at the beginning of the first word. It sounds, actually, like "here", but "here and love" sounds weird. I keep thinking it's gonna be "here and now" but then I hear that V. On the other hand, I hardly hear an L sound at the beginning of the word, which means it could be "of", but that makes even less sense.
I've checked rhymezone, and the only thing that makes any sense to me is "fear and love", so that's what we'll go with.

Caught in the blind spot of fear and love

Can you feel
Real like you were?
Can you feel alive
The way I feel {you now?}{your night}?

And the biggest chance that we can take
Is open arms and wide awake
Hold me now
{So we can feel alive?}
{'Til we can feel the love?}
Tonight

Not much better, but it's another option

caught in the blind spot of fear and love

can you feel, real like you are

This is exactly how I heard it too. It didn't sound mumbled to me at all. I could understand the lyrics perfectly.

What a great song! I love the piano mixed with the rockin' chorus. It's so exciting to have new Goo!!!!!

It's also nice to hear a fresh sound, combining different elements from previous songs by them that I like.

The beginning to me has a certain feeling to when I heard Truth is a Whisper for the first time, with the chorus being a good strong rock section, like Dizzy, Big Machine, Stay With You, hmmm, wouldn't be surprised if this was the first track off of the new album, lol.  Their first tracks always seem to follow a certain tone.  The first track on their cds usually get you set up and pumped for the rest of the album.

Yeah, I think this is pretty much right, except I think it might be

"caught in the blind spot of bein' in love"

I listened to it a couple more times and I still hear ....
"caught in the blind spot of fear and love"  I hear the "and love" very clearly.

Yup, I'm gonna have to agree.  I've had similar problems when typing out lyrics to their new songs before they come out, I have just gotten used to how he flows things together when he sings, and I'm almost 100% positive that Shannon and I are right on that verse.

OK, I'll be the first to go on record as not liking it. It sounds too much like their last record, which I did not like.

Oh boy, I guess I'm not much of a fan of anything after Gutterflower.  :'(

Post by nmf016 on Jun 26th, 2008, 3:51pm
I'm conflicted.  I should probably wait until I hear the whole thing before I decide how I feel though...

What I've heard of the lyrics does nothing for me for the same reason I hate LLI so much - there doesn't seem to be much substance.  It's all very vague, and therefore universal, but I didn't fall in love with this band because of its commercial appeal.  When I first heard the clip, the first four lines made me go "holy shit, is this going to be political?!" and then it seemed to turn into another love song...

The thing that's weirding me out is how much the song sounds like other songs.  There's recycled lyrics from SWY and it's very 'drummy' like SWY.  Then, the whole starting soft and swinging into a big hook thing is very LLI (the song).  I feel like I could swap LLI (the song) lyrics into this song.  I get a little BITL feel from it too, probably because it's at the top of John's range (all I can think about is how much of a trainwreck this will be on Leno, etc, if they couldn't quite pull off BITL).  It also reminds me of Em Elbmuh, but I think that's because I still haven't figured out what the correct lyrics are. :D The incorporation of the piano also concerns me a bit, as featuring a piano when no members of the band play piano kind of goes against the 'four guys playing live' sound John said the new album will take.  The song also almost kind of, but maybe not, sounds like a club/dance song, which makes my brain explode. . . . . .  Maybe what I'm trying to say is that, to me, the song sounds all over the place.

The conflict arises from the fact that I immediately liked the hook, because I'm a sucker for catchy pop songs.  When I heard Big Machine the first time, when the chorus kicked in, I thought it was glorious and I got this wonderful feeling in the pit of my stomach.  I got the same feeling with this new song on the first couple of listens, but I'm pretty certain it won't stand up to my initial impression like Big Machine has.

Wait -- LLI WAS political...Metaphorical, yes, but political none the less.

And I'm pretty sure that Johnny actually plays piano, I think I heard him say that somewhere.

Title: Re: New song playing on googoodolls.com
Post by nmf016 on Jun 26th, 2008, 4:48pm
I will never in a million years believe LLI is political, regardless of what John says about it.  Never.

And John doesn't play the piano.  He does have piano credits on Andy Stochansky's "House of Gold", but it's just hitting the same note the whole song. :D (Since it doesn't get mentioned enough, Andy Stochansky's 100 is a great album.)

Oh.  And I just figured out why this new song has the HUGE hook like LLI (the song).  Gregg Wattenberg co-wrote LLI and produced this track.  Still better than Glen "I ruin everything" Ballard though.

Haha that is funny because when I played this song for my brother, he said he didn't like it because it made him want to go like this ---- :nanner: (he started dancing very similarly to this dancing banana here).

I like the song a lot, but it does sound like a combination of a bunch of other Goo songs.  It would fit in perfectly on the Let Love In album and it seems to have the same message as that album along with BITL.  If this song is actually a political song in disguise, then I think John might be overusing the "love" metaphor a bit.  I mean, there are millions of love songs out there and every now and then, I'd like to hear a song about something else for a change.

Dude, just go watch an episode of Queer as Folk. The gay dance club music will make Real sound like an acoustic ballad. :P

Having listened to it a few more time, I'm still a bit conflicted too. I posted on the singles thread initially that it sounds like a bit of Stay With You-meets-BITL-meets the piano from Better Days,  and I stand by that :P

It also really REALLY bothers me, the "Turns you inside out" line. It strikes me as lazy, at the very least, to recycle that line. Plus it immediately makes my mind break into SWY, which breaks my concentration of trying to get into the new song as my internal brain radio begins playing SWY at me whilst Real is on (am I the only one who's brain spontaneously breaks into song at the slightest provocation?!) so that's a bit distracting, and then the drums come on, making it even more SWY-ish....

I think it's gonna be popular, and it IS catchy, there's just something.....not right to me, about it. Can't say what it is, just that it leaves me going "meh" a bit. I think I might be outgrowing their musical style, or maybe being left behind as they progress, whichever way :P But I'll wait til I hear the full thing before making my mind up, but so far....I don't know. I don't HATE it...but I definitely don't love it, either.  :-/

On the contrary, I kinda like it. I mean, I'm not asking that he sample lyrics from all the albums and put it to new music (although that might be cool :P), but I think it makes kind of a cool tie in with previous work. And it's not like he's the first one to do that sort of thing; Bon Jovi's kinda big on it.

Great post Drew. I really appreciate your thoughts. I like your new attitude and ideas. Thanks for having the courage to share with us and admit you were wrong to not give LLI a chance. I appreciate your honesty.

I think listening to any new album with an open mind or treating it as a stand alone album is great idea. It's definitely a good idea not to compare albums as each one is a separate slice of time. It's like comparing apples to oranges.

I like your positivity Drew.

I knew this would happen while I was gone.

Reading all you guys' posts made me think.
I was never, and have never been one to hate LLI. I think this is because I discovered the band shortly after they had released it, and that does something to the appreciation of this, or for that matter, any bands music. Reading Drew's post made me realize it's because I never had a chance to compare new music to the songs I like the most. I could have done when BITL was released, but I had no idea whatsoever that it was being released until I saw it on TV and I was just over the moon to have new Goo stuff.

I do feel like this song is kind of a continuation of what they did on LLI, yet it's something new. I'm not gonna go out there and review the whole album yet because of that one clip, though. And as much as I'd like a new Flat Top, I guess I have to come to terms that they have moved on way past that.

I'm happy the drums are so prominent, Mike needs to show off his skills some more, and besides, I'm a sucker for flamboyant drums.

I do agree with those of you who said that the "turns me inside out" part is a bit disturbing (my head starts playing SWY too, Saz_Goo).

I agree with that, but I hear "caught in the blind spot of feelin' love". Well, most of all it sounds like "beela lof" but that doesn't make sense whatsoever. Not that I should really poke my nose into that debate, though, I'm not a native speaker and I've knighted myself Knight of Misheard Lyrics.

[edit] Last thought; the song has a very epic feel to it, and I like that. :D I'm still goshdarned excited about the whole song.

What we've got to work with so far.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOWBM0umWJQ

If the (brief) guitar solo is actually in the recorded version, I will officially believe there's at least a little hope for the new album.

And just so I can laugh at how wrong I am later...

Quote:
I need to feel you there
I want to know where I belong
And I strength?
Strong as your love ?
I need to think things through eyes?

Chorus

We are so lost
And there is so much more than you could bear
?? think
.Open arms be complete
??

ZOMG Guitar solo!

Chorus

Shade: word. Great post. I guess I would call myself a pessimist, and therefore in some ways I would rather start from a position of being nervous about a song/album, not sure I like it etc, then listen to the whole thing and find I like it more than I expected; rather than get all excited initally and be let down by the full thing. Takes all kinds, I guess, and I think your way is a better way, really....

Anyway, yay for Real videos!! It's making me excited for tomorrow (O2 Festival, y'all ;) ) - I'll report back on the live version in the evening, if I have internet access....

I can't decide between "fear and love" and "bein' in love", so for the time being I'm going to merge them into the completely improbable "beer and love" instead. :P (It's my twin's influence I tell you, she still has me singing "banging on the edge of a table" in LLI... ::) )

I'm SO HAPPY there seems to be a guitar solo, we haven't had one in a while!! And I have to say, the whole thing is growing on me. I very much like the "in uncertain times, the uncertain rules apply" line, don't ask me why, it just resonates, for some reason.... Is it tomorrow yet??!!

I ripped that video and am listening to it like a madman. But am I the only one who thinks it sounds a bit strange when he is supposed to sing "Turns you inside out"? Sounds like he sings "The story's been changed".

Here's my lyrics guess.

Quote:
You read the news
The story's been changed
And everybody feels the same as you
In uncertain times, the uncertain rules apply
Caught in the blind spot of fear and love

Chorus

I need to feel you there
I want to know where I belong
I'm not what you see ??
I see you frozen ??
I need to stay safe, close I am ??

Chorus

We were so long
And it was so much more something go
Now I'm calling my defeat
You're alone and incomplete
When it's something that weighs down ??

Guitarrrsolooo <3

Chorus

[edit] You know what, nevermind.

Quote:
You read the news
It turns you inside out
And everybody feels the same as you
In uncertain times
The uncertain rules apply
Caught in the blind spot of here and now

Can you feel real like you are?
Can you feel your light the way I feel your light?
And the biggest chance that we can take
Is open arms and wide awake
Hold me now so we can feel alive
Tonight

I need to feel you there
I want to know where I belong
And I felt the sting
The sting of corrosion
And I need a safe place to close my eyes

Can you feel real like you are?
Can you feel your light the way I feel your light?
And the biggest chance that we can take
Is open arms and wide awake
Hold me now so we can feel alive

We were so lost
And it was so much more than you could bear
And I was caught in my defeat
You're alone and incomplete
Will this sound ever break down the walls?

Can you feel real like you are?
Can you feel your light the way I feel your light?
And the biggest chance that we can take
Is open arms and wide awake
Hold me now so we can feel alive
So I can feel alive
Tonight

The lyrics according to a girl on AG who have bought the single.

So....Maybe they're gonna..play it at the Olympics? Just spitballin' here.

Could you clarify the 6th line in Real for us? ("Caught in the blind spot..") Fans are debating what John is really singing at the end, and we don't want no blood shed, do we?
sent by: lionhill

The line is "caught in the blind spot of fear and love"

Awesomeness on a stick ^_^

I KNEW that's what I heard. Thanks for posting.

Now I'm headed over to IM to check out the Q&A's. That's still my favorite feature.

BTW.....congratulations Lionhill on having your question answered by John.

THAT WAS MINE YAY! : D Now I only need Robby to answer, and I've had 'em all answer my questions. Eeeee, I just went from a really bad mood to happy.

But when you hear the song live it's really obvious that that's what he's singing. I've seen it twice now, and there was absolutely no doubt in me when I heard it.
