Title: Goo Goo Dolls to play Rock Fest on 7-19-08! Post by Shannon on May 5th, 2008, 9:50am Updated: 5/5/2008 Rock Fest moves forward with modern lineup Goo Goo Dolls, Godsmack, Stone Temple Pilots headline By Chris Vetter Chippewa Falls News Bureau Rock Fest will have a modern rock flavor this summer, with fewer classic acts than in past years. Godsmack will headline the Friday, July 18, show and the Goo Goo Dolls will co-headline the Saturday show, as Rock Fest announced the final slots in the lineup. Mike Asher, general manager for Chippewa Valley Music Festivals, said it has been a concerted effort in the past four years to switch to more modern rock acts. "When we do the repeats, people call in and complain and say, 'We've seen them,' " Asher said. "They complain that it's the same show, and they don't have any new hits." Classic rockers Boston and glam rockers Poison headline the Thursday lineup. Beyond that, newer rock acts like Three Days Grace, Puddle of Mudd, Live and Matchbox Twenty dominate the lineup for the remainder of the weekend. "On the modern side, there is a little bit of everything," Asher said. Asher said it has been a difficult year to get acts to confirm dates. He has held out for the last week waiting for the Goo Goo Dolls to sign their contract. Buffalo, N.Y.-based Goo Goo Dolls will be playing in Europe until mid-July, and they'll return to the United States just before their Saturday show. "The problem we ran into is we couldn't find any headliners," Asher said. Van Halen, Metallica and John Mellencamp were all looked at as possible artists, but the schedules didn't work out for any of them, he said. Godsmack is returning for the second consecutive year - a rarity for a headliner. "They put on a heck of a show (last year)," Asher said. "They called two, three months ago and said they had so much fun last year, they wanted to come back. They are an awesome band." Stone Temple Pilots will headline the Saturday slot. Asher said he initially posted on the Rock Fest Web site that STP would play, but the band asked him to remove their name until the group made a formal announcement of its summer tour dates. "We had them confirmed for five weeks before we could release it," Asher said. "We've had a lot of interest in them." Orlando, Fla.-based Matchbox Twenty is back touring this year after a few years apart, and they will headline Sunday night. "I've offered to them four, five different times, and it's just never worked," Asher said. "Some bands are so used to playing indoors, and they are just skeptical of outdoor shows." One slot remains to be filled on Sunday afternoon. Asher said that group should be finalized in the next couple of days. Rock Fest fliers should be done in another week. In some past years, the fliers were already out in mid-March, Asher said. Ticket sales are down just a bit - about 2 percent - compared to last year, he said. But ticket sales have increased since the announcement of Goo Goo Dolls and Godsmack. While Rock Fest sales have been a bit off, Country Fest ticket sales are already up 29 percent from a year ago, he added. Title: Re: Goo Goo Dolls to play Rock Fest on 7-19-08! Post by nmf016 on May 5th, 2008, 5:46pm Alright. I think we've got this figured out. I drive the 5 hours across Ontario, the Windsor/Detroit crew drives to Chicago, and then Carlyn gets the last 5 hours. Maybe not. I'll just settle for my New Kids on the Block reunion concert in Toronto. Waaaaaaaay more nostalgic than the late 90s. :D |

When we heard rumors of a tour, my friend and I decided we were going to a show, no matter how far we had to travel. We have assigned ourselves tasks like finding a crimping iron and day-glo clothing. And prepare now, everyone. You WILL be getting an NKOTB review from me on 9/22/08. :D |
