Goo Goo Dolls' lead singer plans to move back to Buffalo

John Rzeznik, lead singer of the Goo Goo Dolls, says he is coming home to live in Buffalo right after he finishes being a judge on the new Fox series, "The Next Great American Band." The show premieres at 8 p.m. Friday on WUTV.

Rzeznik, who was born and raised here and launched his highly successful career at local clubs, said in a telephone interview this week: "I need to be in Buffalo to write. I can't do it in L.A., because what I'm made of is (in Buffalo). As cliched as it sounds, I'm much more comfortable in my own skin there than I am in Los Angeles.

"I live in L.A. -- nobody cares what I do. I'm a musician. If I get drunk and fall down, it's whatever -- it's passe. But if I am on some TV show, then all of a sudden people want to try and dig up dirt on you. I don't live in a gated community in Beverly Hills. I live in a house on a street. I don't want my girlfriend to be affected by it. I don't want any of that Hollywood crap. I know I can go back to Buffalo and I'm Rzeznik."

I hate when that happens to celebrites. It's sad.

I also thought it was really sweet of him to try and keep his girlfriend out of the craziness of the limelight. That Hollywood scene is hard enough to deal with as a celebrity. Imagine what it's like for the 'significant others' who aren't interested in the limelight and just want to live their lives? The whole paparazzi stalking has gotten way out of control.

Buffalo may not get paparazzi, but it does get crazy out-of-towners who take pictures of the most mundane things. Stop signs at random intersections, variously-colored buffaloes, delapidated buildings...amazing.

Only in Buffalo is he called "Rzeznik". It's so gritty.

Buffalo had a bunch of people design big buffalo statues a while back and put them all over Buffalo. �They were later auctioned off, so they're still scattered all over. �(My mom's boss bought one, shoved a hose in its butt, and made a pool fountain... :-/) �

And confession: I've never visited SSCW. �Mostly because I don't want to go down there myself. �:D

Edit: And no one in Buffalo calls John "Rzeznik". Rzeznik seems to be refering to himself as Rzeznik an awful lot lately though...

My favorite buffalo is the pink one outside the diner near the airport. Probably just because it means there's pie nearby. I also like the buffalo with the eyes all over it, the one with clouds, the greenish one at Medaille. Buffalo has a lot of buffaloes. Not too many to overpower the view, though. Now in Baltimore, there are way too many crab statues. Like every 50 feet, there's another dang crab. Jeesh.

I don't buy it. I mean, you can't make such a decision before you're on what might be a huge smash hit tv show. If it's that huge, how can he live in Buffalo and expect things to be normal?

Umm ... I heard that SSCW (the building, that is) is no longer there. Of course, I'm not sure of that myself, since I haven't been brave enough to venture down there by myself lately either. It would be very sad if it was, indeed, gone. As it was, the last time I saw it, there were barely any recognizable signs that it was the real SSCW. The sign was gone and the building had fallen into even more disrepair than is represented on the album cover. Of course, it didn't hurt that those damn tourists keep stealing little tiles from the outside of the building either ... ;)

As for Johnny Goo moving back to town (which is what real Buffalonians call him), it makes sense, since they'll be writing for the new album, which is what they did for LLI. But I can't honestly see the move being a permanent situation.

Last I knew, it was still there, but would be gone soon... so I really wouldn't be surprised either way.

And I feel like the move may be a bit more permanent than the last one. Last time, they just moved to Buffalo to write. This time they're writing and recording, plus they've invested in the new studio. I could see John and Robby having second homes (or an apt) in Buffalo.

Robby already has a second home (apartment, really) in Buffalo, where he stays when he comes up on ChamWest/MIA business. It's right near that studio and just down the road from the new one they're building.

But I dunno about John. I think John likes to visit, but I don't get the vibe that he would really want to live here permanently. Perhaps it's too many memories, perhaps he feels too much pressure to perform for the hometown crowd, perhaps it's the fact that Buffalo's not a terribly 'happening' city. Whatever it is, I honestly can't see him staying in Buffalo permanently. But I guess we'll see.
