Top musicians to rock Joburg at 46664 gig

Peter Gabriel and Annie Lennox top the list of artists who will rock Joburg at the 46664 World Aids concert at Ellis Park Stadium on December 1 in response to Nelson Mandela's call for action against HIV and Aids.

The proceeds of the concert, to be held on World Aids Day, will go towards the Nelson Mandela Foundation's 46664 Aids charity, named after the freedom icon's prison number during his 27 years of incarceration.

The 46664 charity aims to raise awareness around, and provide support to, those affected by HIV and Aids.

Among some of the top international artists who are billed to perform at this year's concert are superstar rapper Ludacris, Grammy-nominated UK soul singer Corinne Bailey Rae, the multi-platinum-selling Goo Goo Dolls, Razorlight and Jamelia.

The final line-up, which will include local artists, is expected to be announced on October 29.

This year's event will be the fifth international 46664 concert to take place since the Aids charity was founded under the banner of Mandela's former prison number in 2002. The Johannesburg concert is the first to be held on World Aids Day.

It will not be the first time that Gabriel and Lennox will be answering Mandela's call. They first made their appearance during the inaugural concert in Cape Town in 2003 and again when Madiba took his message to the Arctic Circle with a historic concert in Tromso, Norway, in 2005.

In the same year, Lennox made another appearance for Mandela in George, Western Cape.

During the announcement of the concert a few weeks ago, Mandela said: "Johannesburg has long asked for a concert to be held here and I am happy that we can now deliver to the people of Joburg. We look forward to being joined by thousands of citizens on that day."

The normal part of me says "That's kinda cool".

The logical part of me says "How the hell is John going to get from LA to Johannesburg for a Saturday gig when he has NGAB on Friday?"

Alright, you win. The NGAB tapes on Wednesdays. Which is dumb because the audience can leak who is eliminated before the show airs. Not that I think there will be THAT MUCH interest anyways...
