Title: NGAB interview with John
Post by Shannon on Oct 3rd, 2007, 11:02am
Yet to premiere is The Next Great American Band, and I got to speak with John "no longer going by Johnny, apparently" Rzeznick and Sheila "the E stands for awEsome" E, who will star as judges on the show. While John's band's music may have been too overplayed and soft rocky for my personal tastes (which are probably questionable anyway), he was a really nice guy in person. And you can't deny that his songs are catchy. I've had that fucking "Slide" song in my head for like five days straight now.

Sara M: If this show had been around when your band was coming up, would you have done it?

John: Um...I don't know. It depends, you know, if we were working really hard and trying to get a break and weren't getting anywhere, sure. I set my own personal deadline for myself as far as, you know, I gotta go finish college and get a real job and a real life, you know? I think I would've done it, yeah, why not? It's a Battle of the Bands in a way.

Sara M: Do you worry that people will see the bands that appear on this show as being manufactured.

John: They're all real bands and they all write their own material--

Sara M: Oh, really? That does set it apart from the other music performance competition shows.

John: Yeah, and that's the important thing. And hopefully we'll get to showcase some of it on the show. I mean, I wish it was all original material, but I guess that wouldn't make for good TV. I don't know.

Sara M: Well, with MTV no longer playing videos, this is kind of the only way we can see original music on TV anymore.

John: Yeah, it's getting harder and harder for musicians to get noticed, you know? I mean, the internet's a great thing and I think that's ultimately going to make music better. Because, you know, record companies, they're all just worried about their own survival. They're not into art anymore. When we started out fifteen years ago, our first three or four records didn't sell very well, but they stuck with us and nurtured us along.

Sara M: Allowing you to build a fan base and become successful. You don't get that these days.

John: No, you don't, and that sucks. And that's why I think a lot of small indie labels are gonna start doing really well. They can make a record and sell fifty thousand copies and that's decent money. The way the major companies are, that system...they can chew you up and spit you out. I'm just lucky that I got a really cool fan base. We make our money playing live. We don't make any money selling records. And it's really cool that we can still go out and play in front of five, six, seven thousand people every night.

Sara M: And on this show, you'll be in front of a much bigger audience.

John: I'm kinda into the process of this show because the people are gonna decide who they want to be the band, you know? Not a music critic, not a marketing guy, not some record company executive whose uncle got him the job. The people are gonna decide. And I think the band that's going to win will be the one that can make that visceral connection with the audience. It's not going to matter about great musicianship or, you know, the cutest guy or whatever. It's gonna be about how they connect with real people.

Sara M: And you're giving musicians a chance that is very hard to come by these days. I'm looking forward to it.

John: I am, too.

And then I spoke with Sheila E, which was quite a thrill for me. As it would be for anyone.

Sara M: Is it tough being so awesome?

Sheila E: Oh, that's so cute! Uh, I don't know. I just, you know what? I'm so blessed that I enjoy what I do and I just have fun with it. Life's too short, you know?

Sara M: Will we see you play the drums on the show?

Sheila E: You'll have to wait and see!

Sara M: Yay!

Thanks for that Shannon, that was very interesting!

(And it was a lot of fun to count the "you know"s in the article too, you would have thought they would be, y'know, edited out or something, you know? :P )
