Meet the Simon, Randy, Paula and Ryan of The Next Great American Band.

Goo Goo Dolls frontman John Rzeznik, percussionist Sheila E. and Australian TV personality Ian "Dicko" Dickson (yes, really) make up the judge's panel for the new reality venture, while New Zealand Idol host Dominic Bowden serves as the host, Fox announced Monday.

Rzeznik got his start in the music business two decades ago and led the Goo Goo Dolls to commercial success in the '90s, selling 10 million albums and notching more than a dozen top 10 hits.

Sheila E. is perhaps best known for being the progeny of Prince, who took the legendary drummer under his wing in the '80s. She has also performed with Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band, as well as Herbie Hancock, Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross, in addition to touring with her own band, C.O.E.D. (Chronicles of Every Diva).

Dickson began his career at Creation Records, where he worked with acts including Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and Oasis. He later moved to Sony, where he represented LL Cool J and Midnight Oil.

Created by the producers of American Idol, American Band aims to incorporate many features of the hit talent show on the search to discover the next big act.

After the nationwide auditions, Rzeznik, Sheila E. and Dicko will be responsible for narrowing the hopefuls down to 10 semifinalist bands, who will perform each week before a live studio audience.

The judges will have the chance to offer their critiques after each performance, but, as with Idol, viewer voting will ultimately determine which acts stay and which act goes each week.

The bands will be forced to demonstrate a range of ability, as some weeks they will perform covers of songs by established artists and other weeks will be challenged to show off original tunes.

The battle of the bands will continue until only one act remains, with the winning group landing a record contract with 19 Recordings.

American Band premieres Oct. 19 on Fox and will air Fridays at 8 p.m.

The show is produced by 19 Entertainment and FremantleMedia North America; Simon Fuller, Nigel Lythgoe, Ken Warwick and Cecile Frot-Coutaz will executive produce.

The picture scares me.  On one side, I'm like "Yay!  John is smiling! And wearing new clothes!" and on the other I'm thinking "John doesn't smile in professional pictures.  What have they done to him?"  

And we won't even start on why he's the one at the bottom getting all cut off...

I wonder how they got him to smile. It's definitely not the same smile as when he's performing.

I liked all your positive points about him doing this. On the one hand we'll get to see him on tv every week. I do actually think he'll be funny and pretty constructive.....as opposed to Paula who's just decoration.

If I could rewind my meet and greet I'd ask him how he came to decide to do this....lol  I'd love to know how he came to this decision after vehemently opposing American Idol. Oooohhh that would be a great IM q & a.

It was strategic of you to put the good points first too. I remembered those over the negative. See...you're not a negative person ;) I can't even remember the negative stuff you said. It was camoflauged so well.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching that entire video though.  :D

Well, I think we just got a goal for this show.  After the first week, we all place bets on the number of times "ya know" is said in the entire series.

I think it's a lazy thing, not a Buffalo thing.  I swear, John says it more now than he used to and I think it has a lot to do with being bored or not trying very hard when he's answering a question.

This is interesting. I've heard in interviews where John has voiced his opinions towards things like 'manufactured pop-bands' - I wonder if this will be different. From the title it sounds promising (perhaps people in starting bands will get together? That would be what the Goo's are about! ie, Robby's record label)


So at the moment I'll hold my opinions till the show starts.

I'm just catching up on the comments on this thread. Hehe, they are hysterical...

I'm guessing the term "dick" isn't used the same in Australia as it is here in the states. I just can't imagine everyone calling that guy "Dicko". I think it's going to be quite distracting.

OK, so it does mean the same thing down under as it does here. Hmmm, and he still lets people call him that *scratches head*

Maybe it's his age. People named Richard used to be called Dick a lot, pre-70s/80s, after that it changed to where they usually preferred to be called Rich, Richie or Rick or anything other than Dick. But I know for Ian, it's from his last name not his first. I'm waiting to see/hear John refer to him as Dicko. For example: "Hey Dicko I liked that band, don't vote them off."

I think it's just an unfortunate nickname due to his last name and he's embraced it.  Because, you know, it's easier to not care about the nicknames than get upset about them.  John has called him both Ian and Dicko when referring to him, but neither to his face so far.

And I totally have an Uncle Dick.

There's one picture of just John and another where you can see the judges watching a band play.  I approve of the new shirt.  Like cool black cup instead of the ginormous Coke cup on AI.  LOVE the yellow notepad for reasons I can't really explain.  Confused why it looks like said cup and notepad are attached to the desk with those cables they use at the bank to keep you from stealing the pens.
