Title: 'Cities 97 Sampler': The good and not so good Post by GooLiquor on Nov 24th, 2006, 11:34am The Cities 97 Sampler is a locally (MN) produced CD of acoustic and/or stripped down versions of songs by artists who visit the Twin Cities. They not only donate their time, but all profits from the selling of the limited number of CDs. The CD went on sale Nov 16 and has, so far, made over $600,000. for local charities. With that said, a music critic from the Pioneer Press felt the need to dog the song Goo contributed to the project.... BY ROSS RAIHALA Pop Music Critic At 8 a.m. Thursday, 35,000 copies of the 18th "Cities 97 Sampler" CD will go on sale at Twin Cities-area Target stores. And despite a limit of two discs per customer, all 35,000 copies probably will be gone within hours. The eternally popular annual CD offers 18 live tracks, exclusive to this disc, with proceeds benefiting a series of Minnesota charities. Is it worth braving the crowds tomorrow to snatch your own? Here's a look at what you'll be getting: What's good: The lineup feels a wee bit hipper than recent years, with Snow Patrol making a second appearance on a "Sampler" ("Chasing Cars") along with Death Cab for Cutie ("Soul Meets Body") and Sia ("Breathe Me," aka that one song from "Six Feet Under"). What's not so good: This being Cities 97 and all, there's also yawn-inducing cuts from Train ("Cab"), Shawn Mullins ("Beautiful Wreck") and the godforsaken Goo Goo Dolls ("Better Days"). What's good: James Blunt's song isn't "You're Beautiful!" What's not so good: KT Tunstall's song is "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree." What's good: After last year's locals-free selection, the Honeydogs and Semisonic's Dan Wilson are welcome additions to Vol. 18. And Wilson's track is especially sweet as his long-awaited solo album remains long awaited. What's not so good: While the majority of the tracks here were recorded live in Cities 97's Studio C, a few are excerpts from local concerts. But what's up with Bonnie Raitt, who has played the Cities twice over the past year, donating a track recorded in California? What's good: Promising newcomers on the disc include Katie Melua (who turns in a cover of the Cure's "Just Like Heaven"), Mat Kearney and Amos Lee (who plays the Fitzgerald Theater on Thursday). What's not so good: Did we mention there's a Goo Goo Dolls song on there? What's good: As is always the case, proceeds from the sale of the CD are distributed to a handful of local causes. Last year, the station donated more than $600,000. What's not so good: As has become the case in recent years, copies of the disc are already popping up on eBay at twice the retail price of $19.97. Proceeds line the pockets of a series of unscrupulous local resellers. |
