For the Goo Goo Dolls, the 2002 album "Gutterflower" almost spelled the end. But once core members John Rzeznik and Robby Takac got a taste of life outside of the band, they came rushing back to record this year's "Let Love In."

In the interim, singer-guitarist Rzeznik's work included penning songs for Ryan Cabrera's debut, "Take It All Away," while singer-bassist Takac focused on his label, Good Charamel Records.

Takac can't put his finger on one incident that brought the band together, but he credits the bonding to "the time we spent in Los Angeles. Kind of hanging out, talking every day about what we saw and the way we saw things happening around us and the people around us. It gave us the perspective that, 'Hey, man, as a team, we're pretty good at this.'

"John went out and did a couple of records," Takac continued during a recent interview. "I went out and did a couple of records for other bands. When we got back to L.A., we said, 'Our day jobs aren't so bad. We make money doing this. All right.'

"Sometimes it's hard to see the forest through the trees. There's so much going on, it's hard to focus in on what's going on in your camp, because the advice is coming from all over the place."

Takac said the Buffalo, N.Y.-bred group's temporary split was due to "bad advice" it received during the recording and promoting of "Gutterflower." He explained there were a lot of people who did not understand the Goo Goo Dolls' history and it created a "delicate situation."

"I think when people started jumping in and throwing in opinions that weren't necessarily best for the outfit, the outfit started to break down a little bit," Takac said. "I think the ('Gutterflower') shows were great. I think the tour was amazing. I think there was an undercurrent of 'Ah, we're probably done doing this. This is our last record.' That is what I think we felt, for one reason or another.

"For this record, we can't wait to get back in the studio again to start the next one. There's a lot different vibe for this band than we've had in the last six or seven years," he added.

Part of the new "vibe" is musicians who were added to the band. Guitarist Brad Fernquist has played with a slew of people, ranging from Michelle Branch to the New Radicals. Multi-instrumentalist Korel Turnador moved to Los Angeles from Pennsylvania to perform with Hanson.

"He's one of those weird, sort of semi-spiritual sort of dudes," Takac said of Turnador. "He can pick up just about anything and make music with it. It's really nice to have him around the scene. He can play the guitar, percussion, drums. It's really turned into a real powerful package."

The core band is rounded out by drummer Mike Malinin, who has been an official member since 1998.

The Goo Goo Dolls have taken their new bandmates on the road with them for their tour with the Counting Crows, which hits the DTE Energy Music Festival on Friday. Takac said the band mulled over hitting the road with Train and Lifehouse before deciding on the Counting Crows.

"When the Counting Crows situation came up ... they're one of those groups that they go out and people are expecting the crowds," Takac said. "To be part of that is kind of exciting for us. Essentially it is a co-headlining situation, time wise. We decided we weren't going to switch time slots around. That's a little too hairy. We use a lot of wacky effects.

"We're probably going to take the second spot the entire tour, except for a few markets, Buffalo being one of them, of course. It's going to be a great tour, man. It's going to be outside the whole summer."

Argh... I can't figure out if they were lying during the GF tour or if they're just making up a good story to tell now. When GF came out and the tour happened, the Goos hinted that they might pull the plug after another record. During the break where Robby was producing and John was doing the solo thing they said it was just side projects and they had no intention to stop their band any time soon. And now they're saying in every interview that the band had ended for a brief moment. I'm all for an interesting story, but the Goos have soooo many interesting true stories so I don't know why they keep telling this story that seems so untrue.

I agree. There are many inconsistencies with their stories it's sometimes hard to know what to believe. :-/

I hate reading so many negative things the guys are saying about Gutterflower. I know it didn't do that well in sales but I just love that album. It makes me sad to know that as a body of work they don't seem very happy about that great, great album.

I hate what they say about GF too. That seems to be the pattern though. They kinda bashed DUTG when GF came out (said the "balls" were cut off the record in the mixing). They bashed SSCW when ABNG came out (same deal, too shiney* and perfect). I can understand saying that you think you've progressed or made something that you love, but that doesn't mean that your previous work should be written off.

But I can't wait until the next record when they start slamming LLI. I'll be all over that. Because the "balls" were cut off, stepped on, dropped in acid, and lit on fire.

*How do you spell shiney? Shiny? They both look wrong.

I believe it's shiny. Spelling was always one of my strong suits.

I had forgotten how they'd bashed albums previous to Gutterflower. I just hate reading stuff like that because like Robby said in an interview ... each song is a snapshot in time of a person's life. And, by criticizing an album or song they're taking away something personal that song has to the listener ... at least it does for me anyway.

I know you're not a fan of LLI....are you still planning on going to the Buffalo show? I've heard the songs are even better live. Maybe the live show will soften you just a tad to LLI. Who knows :dunno:

Shiny. Good to know. I have a new college degree that says I'm capable of operating and designing processes that could kill someone, but no one even cares if I can write complete sentences. Be afraid...

No, I'm not going to the Buffalo show. Instead I will be playing bridesmaid for my sister that day. I have been harboring ill will for her because 1. Her wedding ruins my concert and 2. She's forcing me, the whitest human on earth, to wear green, which results in me having sickeningly pale green skin.

I will instead be going to the Toronto show two days later. I am hoping the concert will be enough for me to stop questioning what sort of magical drugs the Goos are on these days, so I will be sure to let you know.

I asked my mom what she thought of when I said "internal apparatus" and she said "pacemaker", which makes the term way less gross. �She's so innocent. �I was considering "internal mechanism" which bothers me even more.

I still hold my thread killer position. Don't take it away with all your fancy admin powers. My left side of the screen is all pimped out with the 5 stars, the smiling fish, and a custom title. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. :D

But hey, sorta back on topic, since it is technically Friday, you're seeing the Goos today! Yaaaaay for you!

Stay away from manholes. Do not make direct eye contact with Goo. Do not make any sudden movements near Goo. I do not want broken Goos in Toronto.

Don't worry I won't use my powers for evil and take away your coveted Thread Killer title....lol

I do get to see Goos today. It's been a long day already. I just got back from dropping my kids off at my parents' house which is 2 hours west of here. I'm popping in real quick before I leave for the show which is way the heck up in no mans land.

I'm trying not to get too excited. I don't think I can handle another manhole expolsion or anything else that could potentially cancel the show. It was devastating last time. If the show was cancelled tonight ....ahhhh I can't even think about it.

I'll pop in later and give you all my review. God willing I should have some decent pics too.
