ROCK: THE GOO GOO DOLLS

Tuesday: In a Newsweek interview last month, Paul Westerberg told a great story about how the Goo Goo Dolls' Johnny Rzeznik recently gave him a 1965 cherry-red Gibson guitar (worth at least $4,000), presumably to apologize for the Goo Goo Dolls' long-standing reputation as Replacements rip-off artists. Of course, these days the Goo Goo Dolls sound more like Rob Thomas than anyone else, so maybe they need to buy him an expensive guitar, too. 7:30 p.m.; Myth, 3090 Southlawn Drive, Maplewood; $32.50 (all ages); 651-989-5151. Ross Raihala

I don't think it's such a bad thing to be compared to Rob Thomas. He's a brilliant songwriter.

I don't think they sound like Rob Thomas either. I just meant that it's not too terrible to be compared to them. I think Rob is a terrific songwriter ... as is John. I'm not all that into Rob's voice but it was still a nice compliment versus some of the bad stuff I've read lately. Think of all the people the writer could have compared them to .....

I like Rob Thomas.  But I don't think he and the Goos sound anything alike.
