Goo Goo Dolls still feel the 'Love'
After 20 years together, band was having second thoughts, but no more

Sometimes it takes some time apart to become stronger as a group.

After touring in support of their 2002 album, "Gutterflower," the Goo Goo Dolls' founding members, vocalist and guitarist Johnny Rzeznik and bassist Robby Takac, thought their 20-year run as bandmates had come to an end. Living in Los Angeles, along with drummer Mike Malinin, the trio headed their separate ways.

"I think that John and I both felt for the first time ever that we were reaching around, trying different things in our lives," Takac said recently from a stop on the tour with Counting Crows that brings both bands to the Marcus Amphitheater tonight (the Goos will close the show). "So we had a chance to work on some things ourselves. He worked on some records for some other bands, and I did, too.

"Soon we realized that after doing this together for so long, we developed some talents that as a group tend to come naturally. We realized that we had a rapport among us and in that rapport was power.

"And we realized that our day jobs (as the Goo Goo Dolls) didn't suck as bad as we had thought," he said, laughing.

As they decided to have another go at it, the band left behind their adopted L.A. homes and headed back to Buffalo, N.Y., where Rzeznik and Takac grew up and formed the early thrashing punk band that would become the Goo Goo Dolls in the late 1980s.

After working with Rob Cavallo on their other recent outings, the band decided to use a new producer for this album. Takac said Glen Ballard, a Grammy-winner who has worked with Alanis Morissette, the Dave Matthews Band and others, brought a laid-back attitude to the sessions.

The resulting album, "Let Love In," is rife with melodic tunes filled with lyrical expressions of love and examinations on the process of going home.

The Goo Goo Dolls on "Let Love In" are a much different band than their early days when Takac was more likely to be listening to heavy metal than the adult contemporary charts that the Goo Goo Dolls' records are climbing these days. And that's just fine with him.

According to Takac, the future for the Goos, a group that was on its way toward splitting up, is looking strong.

I love;

"Soon we realized that after doing this together for so long, we developed some talents that as a group tend to come naturally. We realized that we had a rapport among us and in that rapport was power.
