Counting Crows and Goo Goo Dolls

MARYLAND HEIGHTS �90s rock stalwarts Counting Crows and Goo Goo Dolls have definitely seen bigger and better days. To borrow the title of a classic Crows song, fans aren�t "Hangin� Around" with the same fervor as before, when Counting Crows moved 7 million copies of its 1993 CD "August and Everything After" and Goo Goo Dolls pushed 3 million copies of its 1998 CD "Dizzy Up the Girl."

But they�ve got plenty of juice left in them and displayed real smarts in joining forces on a summer tour that played UMB Bank Pavilion on Friday night. More than 10,000 fans came out to see the bands.

A couple of things have changed from an aesthetic standpoint since the groups� not-long-ago heydays. Goo Goo Dolls John Rzeznik�s heartthrob thing looks a bit aged, and Counting Crows� Adam Duritz has noticeably packed on the pounds. But none of that mattered as the radio-friendly, girl-friendly bands performed 75-minute hearts-on-sleeves sets each.

To its credit, Counting Crows, who closed out the night, delivered a great set despite not performing a couple of its biggest hits including "Mr. Jones." Duritz, still possessing one of the best voices in modern rock, gave fans reworked versions of songs such as "Anna Begins" and "Angels of the Silences," the always enjoyable sprawl of "Mrs. Potter�s Lullaby," and a superb cover of Joni Mitchell�s "Big Yellow Taxi." Fans also considered early song "Time and Time Again," a tune he hadn�t been playing for a long while, a treat.

Duritz described "Black and Blue" as a song about damaging the people you love, and got similarly pensive on "Round Here" and "A Long December." Members of the Goo Goo Dolls joined the band for "Hangin� Around."

Goo Goo Dolls� own set fared less successfully comparatively, as its set sometimes settled into this bland thing, though that mostly came when bassist Robby Takac handled lead vocals. But when Rzeznik was at the helm on songs such as "Slide" "Black Balloon" or "Iris," even with its added instrumental bluster, everything felt right. Rzeznik got a good dig in at the top of "Name," saying the 1995 song was written before one had to be on a TV talent show to become a rock star. "Stay With You" and "Better Days" came from the band�s new CD "Let Love In."

Augustana, whose latest CD is, "All the Stars and Boulevards," opened.
