I just found this article, which says Ronan Keating received John's blessing to cover Iris.  I wonder if John has heard the mess and if he thinks differently now...

One of the standout tracks that he didn't write is his rendition of a song associated with the Goo Goo Dolls, Iris. And that instantly catchy little ditty has been chosen as the first Bring You Home single � on the advice of no less an authority than Goo Goo Dolls leader Johnny Rzeznik.

"I was in New York one day doing a TV show with Johnny and I was telling him how much I loved their song Iris and that I was thinking of recording it," Keating says.

"He loved the idea and he enlightened me to the fact that Iris had never been released as a single. It had only ever been available as a tune on a soundtrack album, even though it was a massive radio hit around the world."

Hmmm  :-/. I was only at work the other day, and the radio was playing in the canteen.....and what do i hear!!! Yup, Ronans version of Iris. I wonder if he'll release it here aswell, cause i know that he released iris in...i can't even remember what country now, and a different track here at the same time.

It could be worse, we could have gotten a techno remix. "BOOM BOOM BOOM and i dont want the world to see me BOOM BOOM BOOM WOOO WOOO"

Least someone with some talent did it. Just hope people dont think  "Oh Iris I love that song that Ronan wrote"

That's what i was thinking, i hope people don't give him credict for it. Lol it's playing on the radio now as i'm writing this. What will bug me tho is that they're prolly gonna play his version more on the radio than the goo's one, they're version only gets played on a couple of radio stations and every so often. There's different ways this could go, i mean it might even help and boost the recognition the guys get in the UK. People might wanna look into who did the orginal, and look more into their music etc etc.

Ronan Keating is heading to Australia this week and will be performing on Sunrise this Friday.  Sunrise is our version of the Today Show.  I wonder if he will perform Iris?????

You know, I could have sworn I bought a single of "Iris"...a physical CD with B-sides and everything...and yet it was never a single?!! :thinkin:

Well, anyway. I loathe Ronan's version of it, but hey, what can you do, he's recorded it now, and I'd be very surprised if it wasn't released here at some point. And it'll probably be a hit. Ugh. But then, I guess that would be better than it flopping in some ways, because it's still a damn fine song, even with Ronan screeching his way through it....  :-/

Haha Saz, you know what....i could have sworn i brought it too.....actually 2 in fact. It was re-released later on when city of angels was released on vhs. The first iris single had a cover of fleetwood mac's i don't wanna know and lazy eye, and then the re-released single, the acoustic version of iris. I remember the video repeatedly playing on MTV's brand new, and Zane Lowe saying that it was re-released.

in the morning when i was warming up the car, it was on, Iris, by Ronan, and in Australia!

i dont mind it.

But the radio announcer mentioned it was by Ronan, and from his album, but no metion of Goo :(

I've never heard this Ronan guy's cover of it, though it doesn't sound like I'm missing out on anything good. But I am getting curious...

And I highly doubt you'd have to worry about someone attributing the song to this guy. I'd think it's pretty impossible for someone not to have heard the original sometime between 1998 and now. :P

Iris was released as a promo only- to radio stations, etc. It was never released to the general public as a single. I have never even heard of this guy Ronan, but I pray that he at least represented the song with the class it deserves, and didn't totally destroy it! Even so, he'll never do the song as well as the Goo's did. No way! ::)

I have an odd CD, entitled "Granny's Goodies," with various re-mixes of Iris, LOL! Here is the line-up:

1. Exacto Mix
2. Quiet Storm Mix
3. Jeep Mix
4. Unplugged Mix
5. A Cappella

It doesn't say who actually recorded it, unless they're called "Granny's Goodies," but they sound British. It was produced by "Guns 4 Hire," for "Under The Cover" Records out of NJ. I wasn't impressed at all! It was a total disaster for Iris!  :P

I guess I'll have to check Ronan out now, LOL!  Our poor Goo's! :-X

Alright, I went and downloaded it because I'm nosy. It wasn't THAT bad of a cover, it was just... lame. The guy's voice didn't bother me until the chorus came along and he started pouring on the fake emotion in liberal doses. :P And when he squeaked through the "bleed just to know you're alive" line. Oww?
As for the music... it just sounds like a wimpified version of the original song that drags out too much at the end.

I dunno. It's far from the worst cover song I've heard, but it just seems like it was totally unnecessary. And I really do think that his releasing it as a single is a lousy idea. Seriously, out of all the Goo songs to cover, why pick the one that the general public is probably the most sick of hearing?

I haven't bothered to listen to the Ronan cover, but I did buy that Grannie's Goodies cd in a used cd store. That thing was hilarious! It was so weird. I couldn't decide which version was more bizarre. A whole cd of weird Iris. Yipes.

Oh my god!  The "Quiet Storm" remix of Iris is the one they played when they were on Rockline years and years ago.  It's HIGHlarious.  I didn't know the whole cd was just Iris again and again.  I'd love to hear all of the awfulness, but I don't think I can justify spending the $3.  :D

oh sweet god that sounded like someone drunk singing iris about ready to fall off the bar! lol i have the dance mix of name somewhere. who actually sang the dance remix (i haven't listened to it in forever but it sounded like john but then again it didn't if that made sense lol maybe it was just the speed of the song.) if i can find it before no one else does i'll do something lol

as far as ronan covering iris it just seems like its way to freaking soon to be covering that song. i mean i know it was holy crap 8 years ago that it was released but still. if you're gonna cover a goo song make it an OLD goo song that hasn't been played out lol

and you guys aren't the only one that bought the iris single. the one i got had a picture of nicolas cage on the front and had i don't wanna know and lazy eye as b sides (that's how lazy eye got to be my favorite goo song ;) useless tidbit)

I saw Ronans video for the song today on The Hits for the first time. When i heard it i was remembering how John sang it more than caring for Ronans version. The goo's video was way better. He's filmed it in dubai right? with a horse in the desert. I know Ronans got loads of fans it probably will get lots of play. It's already in todays top 10 viewers selection!

lol it keeps coming on tv at our house and my dad and uncle keep teasin me saying how much better the ronan version is cause they know how poor it is...in no way does it even compare to the original :-/

Aww, yeah and they know your'e a big fan of goo's so they tease u more.

In a way it's kinda good thing right that someone is covering a goo's original song. Seems cool that someone would do that but it just happens to be Ronan lol. hope goo's get the credit when people ask who wrote the song originally.

Donna, thank you so much for posting that! I can't believe that ridiculous CD is still up for sale? I sure had a good laugh on that one! Thank you for always bringing a smile to my face. You always make my day! I agree on the different versions of Iris. Calling those versions 'weird' is an understatement! I just hope the guy singing doesn't actually believe he did the song justice? His chance at stardom failed miserably! I guess all is not lost. He could always get a job calling the cows home, or chasing away the mice, LOL!  :hahaha:

Yeah, i was thinking the same thing, but it seems like they do get a mention whenever his version comes up. I was watching something on tv the other day, it was some kinda quiz thing on the music channel, and his version came on....and the question was who sang the original, and Goo Goll Dolls came up at the end of it! :D

Through Ronan the song will be open to a new audience. Lol some people may even go back and watch City Of Angels to hear the original. Or maybe not lol, that's just something i would do.  :D
