The Goo Goo Dolls ? "Let Love In" (Warner Bros.)

Once upon the time, the Buffalo, N.Y.-based Goo Goo Dolls was a pretty darn good underground rock band with plenty of indie credibility. Then in the mid-'90s the band struck sales gold with the CD "A Boy Named Goo" and songs such as "Name" that were more pop than rock. While nobody can blame band leader Johnny Rzeznik for sticking with a formula that sells units, it seems that with each passing Goo Goo Dolls release, the band is slipping further and further into wimp-rock territory.

"Let Love In," the Goo Goo Dolls' latest, does have a few decent rock-out moments, but far too much of this Glen Ballard-produced disc is devoted to the sappy ballad rock that has filled much of the Dolls' work for the past decade or so. "Listen" is one of the few songs that seems to have any oomph to it.

Elsewhere on the CD, the leadoff track, "Stay With You," seems uninspired, as do "Better Days" and "We'll Be Here (When You're Gone)." Especially telling is a cover of Supertramp's "Give a Little Bit." Don't get me wrong ? I love Supertramp (stop laughing, it's a guilty pleasure), but hearing those lyrics coming from the band that once released excellent albums such as "Superstar Carwash" and "Hold Me Up" just makes me sad.

Johnny, you might be padding your wallet, but you have sold your soul in the process. (D)
