George was kicked out because he just wasn't getting along too well with John, they were constantly fighting(from what I've heard, I assume they were) and according to Robby they were not talking at all and John said if Robby had not went to his house and told him he was out of the band, they wouldn't have been able to have a career, in other words I suppose George was breaking off any sort of communication. If you look at older pictures, in almost every single one I've seen George is looking at John with a mean jealous look on his face. I think he was sort of a controlling person. That's how I've always pictured him, though. Sorry if I'm not any help. They talk about when they dropped the bomb on George on Behind The Music.

I have heard a few different stories on this topic.  One is that George heard from friends that they have been hearing Fallin' Down on the radio a lot and he was wondering why he wasn't getting any royalty checks for it.  He asked John about it and John said he had been getting royalty checks for it for while and JOhn wasn't sharing hte money equally like before.  I also heard that John and George didn't get along and Robby had to be the communacator of the band for a long time and it was unhealthy.  So, John couldn't take it anymore and he quit the band.  Two days later, Robby called John and talked him into ataying with the band, but John didn't want to go along with it if George was there.  So, Robby had to go over to George's house to tell him that he was out of the band.  I have also heard that George quit, but I am sure that is not the case because Robby said on BTM that he had to fire him himself.

Actually they dropped the bomb on George after Superstar Carwash and hired Mike right before ABNG. Mike was the first guy they auditioned!

No, they didn't. George did the drumming on ABNG:

George left/was fired/whatever after the recording of ABNG, but before the release. That's why the song "Stand Alone" -- written by George -- was never released, but did appear on some promo copies.

Mike did do the touring for the album, and most likely the drumming on "Disconnected" and "Slave Girl". He was the first guy to audition for the replacement position, though. Obviously he got the job.

Carlyn and PonderingMyFate are both correct  :D

They gave all that talk to interviewers... they never actually told the story "straight."

And Mike was a GGD fan before he joined the band  :)

I also heard that John wasn't giving George royalties for "Name."

Too many stories out there  :P

George wasn't a bad guy... there was just a lot of miscommunication  :-/

I don't think anyone here is really qualified to say what happened with George or assume what kind of person he is.  George, John, and Robby have all given different reasons for the breakup.  Also, both sides of the break up have claimed he was fired, but have also claimed that he left on his own.  The most popular excuses for his departure are that John and George didn't get along anymore (Behind the Music) and that Robby and John wanted to take the music in a different direction than George.

The accusations about royalties for Fallin' Down came about well after the break up.  That was in mid 1999.  So were the accusations that George had written a significant portion of the Goos' songs before leaving the band.  No legal ruling has ever been made on any of that (at least nothing released to the public) so we probably can't really know what happened with all of that.

I've never heard about the band not wanting people to hear "Stand Alone" as Shade said.  My understanding was that they didn't put it on the record because they didn't want to capitalize off something George had created after his departure, not because they wanted to spite him and imply the song was bad.

John and Robby have wished George the best and don't seem to want to drag any more ill will out into the open.  George hasn't been so kind, but he's nice to Goo fans who approach him and I think he still gives autographs and whatnot.  He's still in Buffalo and plays in a very cool celtic rock band Jackdaw.

I heard that George was fired on NYE 1994.
George played drums on ABNG.  I don't think Mike did the drumming for Disconnected and Slave Girl.  I think those were already recorded.  Mike said the first song he recorded with the Goos was Don't Change.  Mike was thanked in the book thing in ABNG.
