Title: Background noise in Iris
Post by tkc1989 on Nov 10th, 2005, 11:11am
I was listening to iris on my ipod really closely and just after the instrumental and the light strumming comes in if u listen hard enough to can hear one of the orchestra turning a page of their music lol

I love that.  I listen for it every time I listen to Iris.

I always wonder how they couldn't have heard it.  With the scrutiny that I'm sure each song goes through before it is released, you'd think that would have gotten removed.  But maybe they thought it was funny, the way John being electrocuted was or the 'crickets' in Eyes Wide Open are, and decided to leave it in there.

the page flip is so faint, you have to listen sooo carefully and if I'm not mistaken it's at 3:16...and I always thought the crickets in Eyes Wide Open were purposely there...oh yeah and you hear John being electrocuted in Think About Me where he sounds like he's screaming "yeaah" but it's probably "ahhh" lol

The cricket noise wasn't intentional.  It sounds like a machine part (of a tape wheel perhaps?)that needs oil.  In a question/answer thing online I think, someone asked them about it and they said they had no idea why the sounds were there.

That's some random link.  There was an interview with Rob Cavallo about recording with the Goos and I think that is where the original story came from.  It should be from around 2002-2003.  (I'm not trying too hard to find it right now.  I'm 3 hours into a heat cascade analysis at the moment...)

Lol- this is so funny. I have never heard the turning of the page in iris. Anyway, i was so curious i tested it out and either i am hearing things on purpose cos im thinking it has to be there, but i have heard the noise for the first time! It is easy to miss. It's at exactly 3.20 seconds into the song - thats where i found it - i think lol.

I knew about the electrocution part in Think About Me, but I have never noticed the page flip in Iris and I have no idea what you mean my a 'cricket' in Eyes Wide Open.  I guess I have to go listen to those songs very carefully now!

I finally heard the page flip and now I have to laugh whenever I hear Think About Me 'cause I used to think he said "yeah" but now all I can do is picture him getting electrocuted when I hear that part. Funny how it worked out in such a way that probably 95% of people who hear the song will think he says it on purpose.

lol i think it's the fact he sorta screams on key so seems to fit really well lol...and at the perfect moment too ;D

You forgot to mention the bubble sounds in the middle of "James Dean" J/K

Carlyn - the "cricket sounds" are during the part where John's singing, "You never ever ever."   :)

I listened to Iris last night.  I think I heard the page turning sound.  I am not sure if it was it, though.  Are the "cricket sounds" also in the remix of Eyes Wide Open or just the original?

If you mean "Ego, Opinion, Art & Commerce," then no.  Just the original on ABNG  :)

I didn't hear any of this. I don't know when I'm supposed to hear it, maybe that's the problem.

AND YOU CAN ALSO HEAR CARS DRIVING BY ON THE ORIGINAL OF TWO DAYS IN FEBRUARY

Yeah, you can hear a lot going on in Two Days in February. I always thought the noise was people moving stuff around in the recording studio, but it probably is cars.

They recorded the song out on the porch of the recording studio, which faced out to the road, which is why you hear traffic.  There is a video of one of their takes on the song floating around.

I remember a story (could be entirely untrue) that the reason for the "Dedicated to Chief Doug... and the guy across the street" is that they were recording outside at night and someone (the guy across the street?) called in a noise disturbance.  So Chief Doug showed up to make them stop playing, but he ended up letting them continue to record.

Isn't there a Goo song with the sound of seagulls in it too? Can't think which song right now.

Actually I hear "seagulls" in Naked.
I hear this high-pitched sound at about 2:06-2:07 into the song. It could be something else, but to me it sounds like seagulls.

I'm pretty sure the 'seagulls' in Naked are just screechy notes from a guitar.

The 'seagulls' in What Do You Need? are probably just some little effects.  I think it's safe to say that when they were recording GF they were in a very nice studio and weren't recording in a parking lot where seagulls could interfere.   :D

Hah hah hah!

NeverFadeToGrey: Yeah, they're subliminal messages, they say, "BUY OUR ALBUMS, BUY OUR ALBUMS."

Maybe that's why some people around here have a copy of DUTG for the car, one for the living room, one in case one of them gets stolen, a copy of ABNG for the shower, one for leisure, etc.   :hahaha:

It's scary, but yeah, I've heard cases like these LoL

Then there's the reverse Scooby-Doo sound at the end of Black Balloon.

(Scooby-Doo= the sound that Wayne & Garth make when they go back in their dream-visions)

(reverse Scooby-Doo= melody of a Scooby-Doo in reverse, of course.)

If the visual of Wayne & Garth doing the reverse Scooby-Doo is too intense...that sound at the end of Black Balloon can be compared to that of a mourning dove.
