Title: What's he whispering Part 2???
Post by denise on Oct 26th, 2005, 9:24am
Ok, since the other whispering question got some answers, here's one I've been wondering about for a while...

In Slide, what's John saying at about 2:44 minutes into the song?

Is it   "I want you"??

I too have asked this before and the consensus answer was,
"I won't say nothin".  Which makes sense w/the whole pregnancy theme of the song. ;D

what about "I won't say anything"

its been discussed before and from what i can remember these are the arguments for the case (lol)

- you can hear him say something that sounds like "a" before "nything" (a-nything) which sounds like "nothing"

i think it also makes more sense grammatically

Ah, but clearly you've never heard a Buffalonian speak.
"Nothing" is often switched gramatically for "anything" as is "don't it" in lieu of "doesn't it"  in Buffalo.  It's not a lazy thing, just a local thing.

Heeeeey, now.  As a western New Yorker, I feel the need to defend all people from WNY who use proper English.  Double negatives aren't just in WNY and not everyone here uses them.  WNYers have a distinct accent, but 'don't it' and double negatives aren't regular.  You will occasionally hear John say double negatives and sometimes he will correct himself.  It is a lazy thing.

And I hear "I won't sat anything" as well...

Hey NMF - SORRY I didn't mean to offend!
I was born in NY (the city) and am a former resident of Rochester.  WNY is america's best kept secret.  Love it there.  Don't get me wrong, in my opinion it's also where I've met some of the smartest people in my life.  Amazing education system in NY.  Great grounded, no nonsense people with amazing heart too.  BUT!  Just like people here in Pittsburgh tend to leave out the verb "to be" as in "The clothes need washed", the double negative is just a nuance of the Buffalo english.  Come on, it's NOTHING compared to the Brooklyn accent and such a small part of their accent.  SUCH A SMALL PART!  I STILL say he's saying "I won't say nothin".  I'm going on a run now.  Will do some listenting research on the ol' Ipod.
;D ;D ;D

I think you're right. After carefully listening again, I think this is it. Although, I don't think I would have figured it out on my own  ;)

thanks  ;D

I always assumed it was "anything."

but I just took another listen and can't hear anything at all after "I won't say"...so...I have no idea.

but i think i assumed it was anything because earlier in the song he says "I wanna wake up where you are....I won't say anything at all.."

so yes, that is where my logic comes from :)

OKAY.  I listened a dozen time today.  All I can be sure of is the "I won't say..." part.  Nothin, Anything...I guess the first person to sit down and have a conversation with Johnny to ask will be the only one with the definitive answer. ;D

I think it is definitely "I won't say anything."  That is what it sounds like and it is most logical.  Also, I know someone who has the song on karaoke and I have sung it before it says, "I won't say anything" during that part. It is possible that the karaoke is wrong, though, because on teh karaoke version of Big Machine, it say, "I'm dying' here waiting for you."  I think it is right for Slide, though.

ok u ppls arguing over pronounciation don't kno anything. If you listen to a fair amount of music ppl often switch words to make the song sounds better. he's saying "I won't say anothin" another trick is to sort of mix words that alot of ppl don't really notice so it gets you thinking like "hmm, that sounds different so I'm gonna listen more" its sneaky but it works.

"alison." i actually read that someone in an interview with the band.  so there you go.   good guesses by everyone and for those of you who claimed to have known first-hand (michaela), i guess you need to recheck your "sources."
