I first heard of the Goos when the song "Name" came out.  I really became a fan after watching an interview with John on Vh1.  He was talking about his years growing up and his strained relationship with his father. Since we are about the same age, I related to a lot of what he was saying.  When I first listened to "Broadway", I knew it was written about his father.  I started buying more of their C.D.'s (I have them all!) and really enjoy their music, especially the lyrics which are written from the heart.  It has been neat to watch them develop over the years and see how they have evoloved as a band and as individuals.  I saw them live New Year's Eve 12/04 and at the Lounge For Life Concert 10/15/05.  I think they are an awesome band!!

The music....I can always relate to something in every one of their songs..whether directly to myself, someone else, the world, politics, love, etc.  Plus their really fun to see live, and very easy on the eyes!

hmmm. . .one day i'm sitting at home and my friend calls and tells me to put it on MTV this really cool song was on.  it was Iris, i wasn't all that impressed at first (please don't hate me!) but the lead singer had really hot hair.  *so hot*  i bought the soundtrack because they played the song to death and i couldn't be cool without it cuz everyone had it.  then i heard Slide and became obsessed.  singing "do you wanna get married or runway," over and over until i found out who sang it and was surprised it was the Iris band.  went online found out they had more CD's, bought 'em liked 'em, went to  concerts, spent lots-o-money on Goo stuff, made a website and now there's no turning back. . . ;D

I first became a fan when a friend of mine and myself were goin' out for a mom's nite out...she had the cd with "Name" on it...I fell in love with John's voice as soon as I heard the song...I then started checkin' into who this excellent band was and discovered that John and mine's mom passed away when we were the same age...after that I just started listenin' to every Goo song I could find and get every cd I could get my hands on...I totally loved their music and have been a fan ever since!!
Since I'm the same age as John I totally love the idea of an "ole" guy with a great voice, leading a great band that has soooooo daaang much energy and puts his heart into his lyrics and music...
and before I make anyone upset about callin' John "ole"...I totally mean it in a lovin' way....after all I'm "ole" tooo.... ;)

Celena

P.S.
It also helps to love him 'cause of his gorgeous eyes!!!

well i live in the uk and not many people have heard of the goos, or they've heard of them and havent heard their music >:(lol....anyways i was flicking through the music channels on tv and found one called magic, and it was playing power ballads and they showed iris!! so i watched it thinking wow this music's pretty good and the band look cool....then i saw it a couple more times and found myself singing the chorus over and over again....so i found some more music on the web, black balloon and slide i think and just fell in love with their music!! then bought DUTG and gutterflower straight away and now have all of their cd's bar first release ::)

It a11 began with liking slide and iris.  i had never really saw what they looked like until one day early in Gutterflower tour on vh1.   :o oh my gosh!!!!  i fell in love immediately.     it was nice to hear that he is only a couple of years older than myself.  at that moment, i love his voice, his smile, his eyes,  oh my, am i getting carried away.      i attended a concert during the gutterflower tour in new orleans and have been a very obsessed fan ever since.   god, i must meet this man!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw Name on tv at like 4am when it first came out. I loved it immediately, not even paying attention to what the band looked like. I just loved the song. I remember saying to myself, "This will be my all time favourite song. I can feel it."

I couldn't figure out who sang it though. I kept hearing it on the radio but missing who the artist was. THEN, after I finally was able to tape it off the radio I learned it was the Goo Goo Dolls ... I rushed and got the CD.

After loving it I back tracked and went after Superstar Carwash... eventually Dizzy Up The Girl came out and went and got that one too. Next thing you know I'm ridiculously obsessed. Haha.

I pride myself on this love that's lasted nearly 10 years.  8)

This story has been told about a hundred times, but once more can't hurt!!! beware of the length and overuse of italics..............

When I was about 14 and in high school my sister insisted there was this song she heard late one night on the radio that she had to have. I found this a little odd as Jane was never really 'big music fan girl of death'
So she bought Iris with the b-side Lazy eye and played it to death. I heard it constantly through her bedroom wall and thought, 'damn, they're great songs'
Then late one night while I was listening to the radio, I heard Broadway but didn't catch the band name, yet I loved the song.
By now Iris had been in the Irish Music Charts for about 12/13 weeks, I mean, there was no escaping the song, or the video, it was everywhere.
Couple of days later I see the video for Black Balloon, and it was just 'I HAVE TO HAVE IT!!!!'
DUTG enters my cd player.............cue mass hysteria and an addiction as strong as tobacco.

When my little brother was in the 1st grade? I think. Anyway my mom had a mixed cd and Broadway was on it. Well my little brother, Jeremiah, loved it. He called Johnny the "Broadway Man." And he had to hear it every day! So I started listening to the words and it took me a while to figure it out. A little research, articles, interviews, Behind The Music, the hair, and I was hooked!!!! No turning back now!!!

I saw the LIB concert on On Demand and loved the concert. Then that week I bought dizzy up the girl, a boy named goo, gutterflower, the lib cd/dvd and the what I learned about ego, commerce ( can not remember the exact name of that one). And now I have to listen to their cds at least once a day. I love them.  I hope they come to New Mexico when they tour again.

My son was 8 and asked for DUTG because he loved "Slide".  Cute I thought.  Better than buying the Backstreet boys.  Well, eventually we were all listening to the CD and then of course it became "not cool".  I was quickly handed down the CD from my kid.  I thought Johnny was HOT and said...Oh, Johnny, this mom could teach you a thing or two!"  hee hee.  Then Goo became my running companions and now I owe them my thin thighs!  Of course I was shocked to realize when I watched LIB and did a little digging that Johnny is two years older than I am!  Boy does it tick me off that the older guys get the sexier they are and us women have to work so darned hard to keep it together...and defy gravity every day.  One of my frivilous goals in life is just to get a hug from the guy and have he and the band sit on my patio and just hang out.  Of course there is always my Johnny come mow my lawn shirtless fantasy.   ;D

wow! lots of great responses to this thread!  So I suppose I should answer my own question.  Name did it for me... then in 1996 I was like a freshman in high school and I went to see them at the state fair here in good old North Dakota and have seen them 6 times after that!  I would love them for their music even if john wasnt so damn sexy. :)

Welcome goom5mraz!  ;D

For me, it was back in the summer of '99 when I heard "Slide" on the radio here...I think I only ever heard it 5 times but that was enough...I HAD to know who this band was. Luckily the last time I heard it the DJ said it was the Goo Goo Dolls, so I went and got the single and LOVED Acoustic #3 and Nothing Can Change You and then just...raved about how awesome the songs were for a few months until, in October, my twin sister bought me DUTG "to shut [me] up".  Sadly her ploy failed :P and I've been madly hooked since, getting ABNG, loving it, then SSCW etc. It's such a shame they're not well known here in the UK but I've managed to convert a few people over the last 6 mad and amazing years... and I've enjoyed reading everyone else's stories here too!

yea it is a shame they arent well known over here, but maybe thats why i can listen to them non-stop and never get bored of them, because they aren't overplayed on tv or radio like other artists- maybe thats the beauty of telling someone my fav band are the goo goo dolls and they are like who?? and then spreading the goo is so fun, i actually just dropped off loadsa albums and the live dvd's round a friends to convert her!

my story is kinda long, so i hope i don't bore anyone... along with a lot of other fans, my "obsession" started with "name". i was going through some medical problems when i was about 12-13. when i was in the hospital for one of my surgeries, i had heard "name" on tv. the part that made me stick to this song to this day is," scars are souviners you never lose, the past is never far". i see my scars that i have and am reminded how thankful that i am that i was able to overcome my medical issue.
ever since i have been hooked on goo, they have gotten me through the bad and good times in my life. i finally saw them in concert in 2002 and have been hooked to their live shows. their music is just full of hope and compassion for what they do. i also love how they are so personable and down to earth, not to mention their good looks :)

I immediately was taken by them as soon as I heard Slide.  I went straight to the store and bought Dizzy Up The Girl...and the rest is history.  I've never loved a band as much as this one and they're truly one of a kind!  I give sole credit to the song Slide for making me a fan and introducing me to something so influential.  Also, I am totally amazed at how nice and down to earth John and Robby are.  They're amazing people and it blows me away at how dedicated they are to their fans.  They give just as much to the fans as the fans give to them.  I will always be a loyal, loving fan.   ;D

I have to admit it, too... It was Iris.  I decided not to buy the soundtrack but wait for the album (figuring I wanted to give all my money to the band not the movie company).. Anyway - DUTG was so great I decided to start at the beginning but could only find HMU at the music store... After that I was totallly hooked, filled in my Goo library w/SSCW & ABNG and have bought everything they've put out ever since!

Hmmm...well, the first song I really remember hearing is Name but it was Iris that really sucked me in. I bought the soundtrack to City of Angels because DUTG wasn't out yet but when I could finally get my hands on DUTG...wow!!! I played it constantly but wasn't obsessed yet. I think I bought ABNG and then Gutterflower as soon as it was released. I didn't become the huge fan I am now though until I saw them live. It was just amazing!!! (and that was from a lawn seat too). 9 albums and 17 concerts later and I love them more than ever...they are just soooo talented and it is so refreshing to see a band that still truly loves what they do and are still so down to earth.

Wow, this is such an awesome prompt to get to know ppl'e Goo history.  :D  Sorry, but I'm pretty wordy so be prepared for a long response.  ;D

My obsession with the Goos is a two part story. My introduction was when I first heard Slide as it was blaring from my brother's stereo in high school. I don't think I was ready to fully appreciate the lyrical magic that Johnny and Robby posses. I think I was just too caught up with the whole young boy band thing - Hanson, BSB.

When my mother passed away last November I felt this overwhelming sadness. Nothing made me feel better...or feel for that matter. I was finishing up my last year of college and when I returned from the services and tying up legal matters I just couldn't concentrate. Nothing or anyone could keep my attention. Trying to find solace....or something...I went through my music collection. That fateful Saturday afternoon I came across the Gutterflower album that my roommate had given me a few months prior. I just hadn't had the chance to listen to it yet. I popped it into my computer AND THAT WAS THE MOMENT! So many of the songs sound happy and cheerful...but they're actually laced with deeper meaning and introspection. The songs on that album cheered me up when I was really sad....something about the uplifting beats....and gave me hopepromoting the idea that yes, times are tough...life is not always happy or easy....but that it could always get better!

I went out and bought DUTG and completely fell in love with that album. A little late but hey, we finally found each other. By far my favorite album thus far!

I will admit that I am completely in love with Johnny.   I love his down to earth personality ...yet jarring confidence. I love how he explained the difference btw vanity and conceit.  :D  So yes, I do find him extremely easy on the eyes. But most importantly, I love how he can articulate a feeling....or moment in time that can mean something different or special to everyone. There truly is a Goo song for any kind of person, experience or mood.  8)

I have purchased every Goo album except the first one (but I have heard evey song on that album) so that I have my basis covered to suit my every mood. And I'll get to have my first live Goo experience NYE in Vegas!   :nanner:

Haha yeah, pleeeeeeeease tell them to come back to the uk! Their uk fans are missing them tons!!

Well, my goo story first started out when i saw the trailer for city of angels. I really wanted to watch the film when it came out. And one day i was flicking through the music channels when i saw iris playing! At first i saw a clip from the film and thought 'ah this must be the song to the film'. I was like, ah this is a really beautifual song, it's really nice! And then i saw John and was like wow....he's nice......really nice! lol. I couldn't get the vid or the song out of my head after that! And then after awhile, iris gradually stopped playing till i was flicking through the channels again and ta da.....slide was on! I instantly recognised the singer, and thought ah this is the band that sang iris! I carried on listening for awhile, and was like, yeah i'm liking this! And i've become hooked ever since! lol. I then started buying the albums etc, and found myself relating to their music in someway or another! Just being touched by their music! Whether it be a lil hook in a song, lyrically, or the way John sings, Mikes drumming, Robbie on bass! Induvidually, they all bring something so unique to the band, and mix it up!!...You truely do have something so amazing and great! They really are inspiring! :-*

So yeah, that's my story! Was it long enough for ya....cause i could go on! haha :D

I only have two memories of goo songs. Big Machine playing on the radio while me and my family were going on vacation, and when we were on our way back from the beach.
Basicly my obsession started 4 or 5 years ago, and I heard my cousin/friend listening to Iris on their computer while i was at their house, and i've liked Iris ever since. The second Goo song i heard was actually Black Balloon, Then  i heard "Im still here", and then i heard "Here is gone", and "Big Machine". The i bought my first album, DUTG. My second, gutter flower, then ABNG, then LIB and then EAOC. I live in a small town and i have very little acsess to goo stuff. No posters, Tshirts or anything in our Mall.. Ya it sucks.

Thats me!!

Ive been a fan since superstar carwash cos thats when i first heard them, all their other stuff i wasnt born yet lol....

i read about johns past and was on their website, and they sounded like a half decent band. so i bought the SSCW cd, and thats when i got hooked.
they werent my fave band but they were a band i really liked because you know in those days i liked backstreet boys and whats her face britney spears.... thank god i grew out of that. then when i was in gr.7 GGD's became my fave band.... Shortly after I seen OLP and they became my fave band (also a band I liked since their Day 1) OLP have been my fave band for almost 6 years, but believe me goo goo dolls are right after them.... ITs hard to chose between OLP and goo goo dolls but OLP is just a band i like all of their stuff.

Goo goo dolls however, are one of my other fave bands.. ahh what am i saying lol im not making sense.
okay...umm Goo goo dolls is still one of my fave bands along with others but OLP just happen to be my fave... but regardless, I love everything by the goo goo dolls minus a few of robby's songs because they sound the same but i love everything else. (i do love robbys songs just not like 3 of them)
