Title: Iris vs better days
Post by Shauny on Sep 21st, 2005, 12:30pm
I heard it mentioned that better days was meant to be better than iris. What do you all think, personally I think its an awesome song but falls very short of iris and the power of that song.

I know what you mean...I've been trying to work it out myself! :P I think the difference (to me at least) is the backing music - it just doesn't seem as strong to me.
The guitar solo in "Iris" made the song for me, but there's not the same vibe going with "Better Days". But then, maybe there's not meant to be. "Iris" is about someone being passionately in love, whereas "Better Days" is about Christmas. I don't think the two could compare in terms of intensity, if that makes sense.

so...yeah. Not in the same league as Iris, but considering it's a song about Christmas, I'm not surprised. :P

Bettery Days
-lyrics are very good and uplifting, but generally the same as iris. Better in a positive sense.
-Chorus is not memorable as Iris. Not in love with it..but maybe need to grow on me.
-Solo is awful cuz it's very unoriginal.
-millions of songs with the name "better days".
Conclusion: i don' t think they gave it their all...but it's still one of their best songs to me..not bad at all.

Iris
  -Best intro
-Memorable lyrics that everybody can relate to and sing to..especially the chorus.
-Solo was really good, like the head banging part.
-too depressing..this is where I think Better day is better, but I guess more ppl relate to Iris more.
  -Unique song title.

Overall:
I think in a way "better days' Is better cuz the meaning is so amazing. This song has the potential to get very deep into ppl's heart. "Iris' was a great song..but it was a temporary thrill..but this song..VERY deep. For commerical success.."iris" is the way to go...but this song is more than just entertainment. This song can be one of those songs that u hear 30 yrs from now if it's marketed right. Imagine hearing it every Christmas or to symbolize peace? Imagine hearing this song for tradegies.

call me lazy but why compare the two songs.......They have some stuff that is simular but they are ver diffrent in alot of aspects. I dont think the GGD's write a song and say hey lets try and make this better then Iris. They just let things come to them natually it seems. Let the song fall into its right place without comparing. I think its not fair to "better days" to hope it has the success that Iris had, as its very hard for any band to pull off. Better days will do well and just enjoy the music the goo's give us

a subsequent album or song rarely is or does better than a previous one due to:"The law of diminished returns for instance Star Wars(ep.IV) has never been close to being match by  any sequels or prequals in attendance or in come. The Beatles' 1st release was never overcome by any subsequent album. Thus will probably b true w/ the Goo Goo Dolls

I disagree.  Name and ABNG was popular, but the subsequent Iris and DUTG were huge.

However, while I'm not a fan of comparing songs, Better Days has nothing on Iris.

I love htem both, and they are both by the GGD's so why compare them?!!

And i dont see how better days is about Xmas when they only mention one thing about boxes wrapped in string....  lmfao other than that i think its about the bad in the world... (war, tsunami, hurricanes, ..etc)

You don't see how it is about Christmas??
Ok well, you already know about the boxes wrapped in string.
When he says "Cause tonight's the night the world begins again..."meaning when Jesus was born the world started over or something like that.
"I wish everyone was loved tonight.."Christmas is normally a holiday where everyone has someone to love,thank,etc....
And some of the other lyrics give it away but it's a little harder to explain, you just have to really listen to the words.
Sorry,I don't mean to sound rude. :-*

I don't really like to compare things.  I lvoe both better days and Iris for their own reasons.  They both have very maeningful lyrics.  I do think the instruments in Iris are a little better, though.  The guitar is more intricate and I love the solo!  The piano in Better Days is awesome but it is pretty simple.

I hate comparing songs like that. It's like we're trying to measure everything the guys do to Iris.

We may never have another "Iris." And that doesn't bother me, I love everything they do whether it reaches the fame/recognition that "Iris" did.

Anyway, I can see why Better Days is a Christmas song, but I know it will apply to things I experience throughout the year. It's amazing like that... it isnt a Christmas song in the traditional sense because it can stretch beyond an annual meaning.

Today was my final day at my current job, I'm moving across the country next week... and as I sat in my empty office, I listened to Better Days and thought how right it was, and that I will find better days in my new home.

That's why I love Goo.

No its okay... but thats how you portray the song.... I think its about you know the tsunami, hurricanes...etc IT could have something to do w/ christmas but i believe it has a deeper meaning than that.. and how like N.O was destroyed (tonights the night the world begins again) recovering after something bad i.e)Weather,terrorist..etc

I personally think it has a deeper meaning than christmas. the Box ribbion thing if u listen he says "and yyou ask what i want this year, and i try to make this loud and clear and clear, maybe then we'll find better days, and i dont need boxes wrapped in strings"

I dont think he means xmas directly. I think he wants peace in the world, and that some people have nothing and he doesn't need anything fancy.... get my point? it has stronger meaning than xmas, it maybe have certain parts in it but theres a deeper meaning behind it...

thats my two cents anyways.

uumm ok better days is not about christmas altho he says that line, look at everything that has happen with the hurricanes, wars and stuff and everyone who was left homeless children more so, "say a prayer for them" refering to children and wishing to find better days, as far as the line "coz tonights the night the world starts again" meaning that they have to start all over again but knowing this will go it path in the end but to each thier own i guess

Uh...well, maybe some of you guys are thinking of Christmas as Santa Clause and Christmas trees??

To me, this is definitely a Christian song. Prayers are usually related to religion right? Plus, he also said "everyone is forgiven now"...FORGIVEN...isn't that a huge part of Christianity?

I'm not Christian either..hah. I guess one can interpret it anyway they want. One can think that it's a a murder suicidal song. John's the guy who's gonna create a new world for everybody around him..hehe.

well i wouldnt say its a christian song exactly.. a lot of songs mention GOD, and prayer...etc     I think its basically about you know bad times, war, terrorist, hurricanes, tsunamis...etc

but it does have some catholic beliefs in there...
