Title: cover band
Post by jmanhall1 on Jul 28th, 2005, 2:17am
Hey guys, I'm in a Goo Goo Dolls cover band. We know so many songs that we have to mix up the set list at every show. We really like playing their old stuff.

I made a slower acoustic version So Outta Line. Do you think this would be a good song to play at one of our shows?

We rarely get real gigs, we mostly just play at partys and stuff.

We will probaly be a cover band until we get out of high school, and then we will see what happends from there.

That's an impressive list.

A few others you should try to learn, just because they kick so much ass:

Livin' in a Hut
Know My Name
Domino
So Far Away

... and I've always thought Somethin' Bad would sound awesome acoustic-style...

You should put out a CD. It seems you know a ton of songs to play to make 3 cover CDs. I bought a cd where a cover band did a ton of goo cover songs and it was awful, so I bet you could do a lot better  ;)

Yeah, i think the name of that band was called Soft.

Unfortunatly, I don't think we know anyboby who would want to help us make a cd, but remember that we did record some stuff at my house like the songs I posted.

Just give me a song name and i'll post our cover of it, but remember, we did not record all the songs we know becuase Sarah was not in our band at the time and a lot of them are just practice songs that we never re-recorded.

I'll post all the songs we did soon.

By the way, what did ya'll think of the songs I posted?
Were they any good?

Ok, here are the songs we recorded:

The songs that are labled "practice" are songs that we were suposed to redo but never got around to it. Like I said, we were not really a band untill Sarah showed up.
All songs do not have drums becuase we could not get the drums recorded propearly, but some have percussion.

Slide (practice)
All Eyes on Me (practice)
Acoustic #3 (practice) (messed up the tempo)
Iris
It's Over (practice)
Sympathy
Long Way Down
Naked
Flat top (acoustic) (practice)
Name
Only One (practice)
Cuz You're Gone
We Are the Normal
22 seconds
Hey
Just The Way You Are (practice)
Two days in febuary
Two days in febuary (practice)
James Dean
Up Yours
Don't Beat My Ass

Two days in February is beautiful and I admire whoever sings because they have a really good ear and sing on tune the whole way. (I've heard many Goo songs slaughtered because they were so off key.)

To be perfectly honest, We are the normal could've been better, I couldn't really tell what it was at first, but that may've been just bad recording. No offense or anything, I realize that's a million times better than I could've done if I'd even had the guts to do it in the first place!

Keep on promoting Goo! You guy have lots of potential! :)

Title: Re: cover band
Post by jmanhall1 on Aug 5th, 2005, 4:10pm
Thanks, i always thought i had a bad voice, but Tom was like "dude you just have to forget what you think becuase you sound better then the rest of us", so that made me feel a little better rerecording my voice. We really love Two days in febuary, so I just said why don't I harmonize to it. So I wrote the harmonized notes to the song and thats what came out.

You have to remember, we didn't record these songs in a studio, we did it at my house; we are just a small town local band.

I will post some more songs on Sat.

We have now added "A 1000 words" to the set list. It didn't really take us that long to learn, but our drummer wasn't really getting it right, but he learned it and so we added it to the set list. The weird thing is that when we play it people start to slow dance with their boyfriend or girlfriend and then when we go back into Cuz your gone they get really confuzed; its really funny.

Let me know what you guys think of the songs.

I love your covers of their soft songs like Sympathy, Name, and Iris. The instrumentals and vocals on those songs are great. Did you guys use tabs or just figure it out? If you used tabs, where did you get them from? They sound very accurate.

Title: Re: cover band
Post by jmanhall1 on Aug 18th, 2005, 3:47pm
They relased a guitar book for ABNG, DUTG, and Gutterflower, but i had to figured out most of them becuase some of the stuff in the book wasn't sounding a lot like the song. I'll tell you, its not east trying to figure out a lot of the songs by yourself, I had to study a lot of thier live shows. I broke a lot of guitar strings recording these songs.

Title: Re: cover band
Post by MethodInMadness on Aug 20th, 2005, 12:14am
Well you sure did a wonderful job figuring them out. I picked up the guitar last year and I think their songs are hard even with tabs! Good luck to you guys, you have lots of potential. :)

Thanks. It always good to hear that from people. A lot of people wonder why we play their songs and not our own and hear is the reasion: We have looked at a lot of their lyrics and they want the same thing we want..... PEACE! and they have a lot more other messages in their lyrics that we also agree with. So why wouldn't we cover Goo!?!
