Title: Intepretations
Post by Becky on Jun 12th, 2005, 3:26pm
Hey guys! Need help...

I am writing a screenplay partially based on Stop the World, and I'm wondering what you think these words mean:

Cause the stars you see are on a dirty sidewalk
And they ain't for wishing ooh

My best guess would be that he means don't put too much hope in wishes and things aren't always what they seem. That's the good things about his lyrics tho, you can always form your own interpretations from them.

It makes me think of the Walk of Fame in Hollywood, where they have various famous people's names represented on stars imbedded in the sidewalk.
People walk all over them. Maybe a lot of the folks represented had a sad ending to their story.
Not at all like the stars in the sky that one would make a wish on.

that's immediately what i thought of! the sidewalk of "stars"...

i guess for me, it would mean that you were a celebrity, a star.. and now you're stardom is just walked all over, doesn't amount to much other than a dirty sidewalk... don't look up to celebrities to make your wishes..

yea i'd say the 'walk of fame' is probably the most realistic interpretation...but you could have so many...could also mean that the stars are what decide our destany or where we go and that stars arent for wishing on because you can't change your fate and what happens happens? i dunno, but they r really hard to interpret sumtimes >:(lol, but thats why i love his lyrics ;D

I think that in the context of the other lyrics, like the couple of lines before, which go like this:

I've given up on you
You live in truth and I know I can't fake it

I agree most with MethodInMadness as far the interpretation goes. It may be a reference to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but John's lyrics seem to go much deeper than the surface level.

It could be a way of saying that the person he's referring to in the song has a big misconception about the world and for that reason it will be hard for he/she who bases his/her happiness on that misconception to find happiness.

Does that make any sense? LOL. Just my two cents' ;)

i agree that johns lyrics seem to go much deeper than surface level/appearance.

im not sure whether john had the misconception, the person hes writing about had a misconception, or possibly a combination of the two....

"you live in truth and i know i can't fake it" ......

"cause the stars you see are on a dirty sidewalk, and they aint for wishing ooh....
if they dont come true..... "

most deffinately a deeper than surface level concept.....

stars you see - (that arent for wishing) .... possibly neither litteral stars nor celebrities... but more of a symbolism...
(stars seem to be a theme with the goos.... "lucky star" , in dizzy "everything you are, falls from the sky like a star...")
.... so i would assume "the stars you see" are symbolic

and that "cause the stars you see are on a dirty sidewalk" - rough path?  harsh trail?
- if this person happen to be "chasing" "the stars" then the placement on a dirty sidewalk could represent their placement on a rougher path, harsher trail... more difficult path in life....
something that cannot be changed... yet the person johnny writes about is determined to reach their "destination" (<-- not the best word for that... but im trying... )

johnny was saying how this person had another bad day... they can't take it anymore....... johnnys giving up.... he can't handle the path this person wants to take??

also, whatever the stars represent is probably what johnny is talking about "and you're holding on forever but that something just aint true".... johnny believes the person may have a misconception...........

just some mid-afternoon ramblings.... if anyone thinks im close ill continue the thought process.... for now though i need a cigarette  8) :)

anyone think im close?? or way off base???
