Title: Hold Me Up [your opinions please]
Post by DrPepperGoo87 on Apr 29th, 2005, 11:14pm
K, I've been contemplating for about 4 months whether or not I should buy Hold Me Up. Now, as Goo fans, it might make you feel like your a bit predispositioned to answer but...is it worth paying 15,20 bucks for the entire cd? I want your HONEST opinions for those of you with the Hold Me Up cd. I don't want to buy it unless it's a really good cd. On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate it? I've only heard the one song "Two Days In February" and I like it, but I don't know how much I would like the other songs. Is it as good as Superstar Car Wash? If it is, I'm gonna go ahead and buy it. The reason I'm so hesitant is because I don't care too much for their songs like "Torn Apart" and if I buy it and find out there's only those kinds of songs on the cd, I'm gonna be hugely disappointed. I LOVE the Goos but "Torn Apart" just isn't my idea of great music by them.

Be as honest as you can about it, please. If you're worried what you say will make you look "Anti-Goo" then I don't advise you to even bother answering me...it's probably not going to end up being a truthful opinion; no offense.

OK, i LOVE my hold me up CD. But I think it is pretty different from SSCW. It sounds a lot punkier and raw than anything SSCW and after. For some reason, I don't know whether it's because it's a reissue or because Metal Blade sucks, but my hold me up and jed CDs are a lot quieter than all my other goo CDs. Like, the overall sound is faded or something and I always have to crank my CD player up real loud to hear it.

On hold me up, I don't like the Lance Diamond song, Never Take the Place of Your Man and Hey. There's also a really short song and an instrumental song. (Not saying that's bad, some ppl just don't like instrumental songs.)

Robby sings AWESOME on this CD. I think so anyway.

$15.20?! I got mine for only $11! Go to Barnes and Nobles, they let you preview a few seconds of each song too.

Sorry for such a long boring post, but this CD has some of my favorite songs on it.

I think if you really really like goo songs than you should get it. I think Robby sings on it more than John, so you should ask yourself whose vocals you like to listen to. And this album is earlier into their careers, so if u like the stuff after 'iris', than the cd will take a bit of time to get used to, cos their music has changed over the years. But bottom line, it's the goo's, so if you really like the songs you've heard than you should like this album.
I have to say i haven't bought this one yet, but i would get a 'boy named goo' first. I spent 16.99 on Ego opinion art and  commerce, cos it has all their less known songs from past albums !! Hope this helps.

for a very long time, HMU was my favorite album.  now, it and DUTG compete for favorite status.   ;)

but "there you are" is still my favorite goo non-ballad, and it's on this album, which, in my opinion, makes it worth buying.

this album is definitely very transitional between Jed and SSCW.  not as rough as Jed, not as smooth as SSCW.  "kevin's song", the instrumental, is one of my favorites too.  the mats put instrumentals on their albums at times, and i dare say that's where the goo's were inspired to do that from.

"hey" is a great duet.  they should definitely do more of those.  (hint, hint, goo's!!)  and their cover of "a million miles away" by the plimsouls is a blast.

i would definitely recommend getting it.  if you or a friend has rhapsody, you can listen to the entire album and make up your mind.

10!!!!I love all of their cds!SSCW has a few more songs written by johnny if that helps you out any and two days in feb. is a good one there you are is a good one so is just the way you are Kevin's song is the instrumental one i like it but that's just my opinion the one song on there that's like 22 seconds long is dumb i know for a fact it's not robby or johnny or lance so i think it's george tutuska(the former drummer) singing it and he says something like this:"I feel so important today and i wish i didn't"and it's called 22 seconds but othere than that it's an awesome cd!

well, i've made up my mind; i'm gonna get it. with my lack of luck, i'll probably have to end up ordering it from a store, close to where i live, in eastgate...which means i won't get it for at least another MONTH. why do things have to be so difficult!? i know no one has it within a 40 mile radius and my mom's not willing to drive me to cincinnati just for a cd...just a cd to her, but a great deal to mel! :(

how i hate mail business...it's soooo slow. >:( "it may take 6-10 weeks to ship to your location" it's such bs. when you order something, why does it take so long to get it? [you don't really have to answer that...lol...it was more of a complaint or thought than a question]

thanks for all the feedback...appreciate it.

i hope it's good...

later.

i got my HMU from wal-mart and i'm pretty sure it was less than $15.  i think you'll really enjoy it, but if your used to the more rock ballads of Goo, it might come as a shock to the system at first.  honestly, i love every single Goo album, but i can put HMU in and listen to it all the way through (as with ABNG) but i don't do that with all the albums. . .let us know what you think in 6-8 weeks. . . ;D

Honestly?? I'm not saying this cuz i'm a hardcore goo fan who only says good things, but I think it's worth the money. I would pay 50 bucks for it!! It took me like a year before I bought it cuz I was s disapointed with "Jed", which I thought sucked. "HMU" was right after "Jed" and man, "HMU" was great!! Way better than "gutterflower" to me!

oh yeah. like someone said, if you're fan of "iris, slide, broadway, etc"...u may not like "HMU", but if u love superstarcarwash and aboynamedgoo, then you're gonna love HMU.

"The agony!" lol...it's like you wake up every morning when it comes close to that time thinking "what if it's here?" and you know it probably isn't, yet and still, you build up all this excitement just in case. then you wait until that mail man comes around your block...he passes your house... :( you get pissy or upset and then you do it all over again the next day! ::)...it's so immature but we're only human...and it is, afterall, Goo related material! you can only take so much tension!

well, i think Gutterflower was a very mature step in their music career for all of them, as far as writing lyrics goes, especially Robby. i don't mean to sound bias or anything, but i think that GF shows the most potential i've seen thus far on behalf of Robby's lyrical skills. i liked all of the songs he wrote on that albim; i like a few of his other songs like "Domino" and "Amigone" but these would also have to be my favs. i don't know about musically for them all together, no offense. the music was great and everything but they've got better music potential than what's on GF.

and about what you said after that...i love Dizzy Up The Girl a lot but i love Superstar Car Wash equally so i'm not so sure i can depend the outcome of my liking HMU based on that reference. they're my two favs by the Goos. they write ballads like "Iris" just as well as hard rock like "Domino" or "On The Lie". on DUTG, they wrote songs that were more modern alternative rock than anything, for example "Slide"...very mainstream but a really great song. on SSCW, they wrote really great rock songs too. lyrically and musically, they are completely different but both are great albums.

as i said before, i'm gonna go ahead and buy it...so far, from what i've gathered, i'll like it. i don't think i'll buy all of their albums...i heard "torn apart" and if most of thier songs on the other albums sound like that, there's no way i'd spend money to buy it. sorry, i think they realize that thier music back then was a lil on the melodically-disinclined side. it was too, how should i say, messy.

off the subject...

"Torn apart" ....what's up with the * in place of t o r n? without the spaces in between the letters of course.
