Title: Something my friend said......
Post by Dream of Goo on Apr 19th, 2005, 4:05pm
Hi guys,

Today i got my friend to finally listen to some goo goo dolls songs, cos i woz talkin alot about them to him and he didn't know who they were and the only image when you said goo goo dolls 2 him woz of a rag doll!!!.......
Anyway, he loved the songs from dizzy up the girl and gutterflower.. :D but he said somthing thats never entered my mind but this is what he said....he goes that the music i.e guitars and drums r loud on the songs that they overshadow Johnny's voice for e.g on 'aint that unusual'.
Do u think this is true or not?
You guys r the  only hardcore goo fans i know.. so don't b mad at me for even suggesting this. I love the goos!  :D

i guess i never looked at it that way... i'll have to pay attention to the sound level of the drums/guitars next time!

i know an acquaintance and he won't listen to them just because of their name.. now talk about being silly! LOL

Very true!  I had to listen to Gutterflower a couple of times before I decided - OK, this is a cool album.  For some reason, the band does not make John's voice  out there enough.  They have it more a mix in with the music.  I think this is one of the factors that hurt sales of Gutterflower.   :(   DUTG You really notice John's voice and catch all the words, not so on Gutterflower, especially if you have a cheap system in your car!

I've got the opposite view of DUTG.  I think the music is WAY too in the background on it.  John's voice sticks out too much (as much as I love it, I like a full sound)      Gutterflower would have sold better with better promotion.    It's all about the advertising dollar, and Goo got very little of it in support of GF.  (Only 2 videos?  C'mon!  And Sympathy only happened after it took off on radio)

I've never really noticed John's voice getting "lost" with all the music. Personally, I prefer the sound of ABNG because it's a little less polished, and you really get the whole vibe of the guitars and everything... on DUTG, although I love it, you don't really get the same feeling of energy in the music, and I think that's probably because John's voice is more emphasised.

I agree that Gutterflower would have done better if it had been promoted more - the record company dropped the ball a little on that one, maybe they were expecting that the association with DUTG would get the albums to fly off the shelves without them needed to invest anything extra.  ??? I hope they're a bit more pro-active for the next album!!  ;D

Agreed. I really like the sound of all the instruments. It enhances the singing.
