Title: GGDs question for the fans
Post by crazy4goo on Apr 3rd, 2005, 10:40pm
At one of the last live chats with the goos sombody asked them "If you could ask your fans one question, what would it be? And their reply was "What about us makes you connect with us?"

So what makes you connect? :gflower:

That has to be one of the most well thought out question ever.

Strange thing is, I don't think I can really pinpoint exactly WHY I connect with the Goo Goo Dolls.

Maybe it's because of John's beautiful songwriting that effortlessly combines real-life experiences, storytelling and emotions?
Maybe it's because Robby has that wicked smile and an aura of happiness that is infectious?
Maybe it's because Mike has that quiet demeanour that instills a sense of mystery?

Or maybe it's just because they rock!     ;)

I didn't get on board with the Goo Goo Dolls until 2002.  Not sure why I didn't sooner.  I always knew OF them and their music.  One day I was watchin VH1 and "Here is Gone" was playing.   I was like "WOW is THAT the Goo's?"  SO, I hooked myself up with my first show in April 2002 - Irvine CA.  And from that point on I was hooked.

Its the fact that THEY (Robby and J.R.) write their own music and lyrics.  That means alot to me in the bands that I support.  I dont think "buying" a hit single is a sign of a TRUE TALENTED ARTIST.

I am a big fan of the older songs - the harder rocking songs.  Hoping their new CD rocks like the old days!

Anygoo, that is my personal story.

What a good question...
Its funny because I often try to explain this to people, and... I can't.  I dont think I can even explain it to other fans.  Part of it is the immediate and inevitable connection, but a lot of it is how that connection has grown over time and how it has affected my life.  I think I am going to write about an essay about it soon, as an attempt to articulate it. If anyone is interested, I will post it when I'm done.  But in general, I think its entirely too difficult to explain.

i think it's because almost all of johnny's songs especially acoustic #3 make me feel like i'm not the only one who has gone through what he's describing and i can just relate to alot of their music.i dunno something like that.

What makes me connect?

Its like before I heard them I never knew I was looking for them, if you know what I mean. I know that no matter what happens, my Goo cds will never ever let me down, whereas its virtually impossible to say that about anything else in my life.

I think for me the connection is their live performances!  I mean you listen to a CD and you can say you like a song, but at least for me when I hear it live it just makes me love it even more.  It's great seeing that the guys are having just as much fun as the crowd is.  They put so much passion and their all into their live music which makes them such an incredible live band!

hmm... that's a tough one. what Becky said.

also... there's a certain freedom in their music... an energy... not like running and jumping energy, but a pure, emotional type energy. they're so easy to connect with cause they're so raw.

For me it's

1.) Their music is rock SOLID (or maybe I should say solid ROCK as well!) ~ they create such quality songs that are diverse...unlike some bands whose songs all sound the same.  They just make DAMN GOOD music that evokes a lot of emotion (happiness for me!) in the listener.

2.)  They are one of the best live acts around...takes some incredibly talented people to sound just as good, if not better, live than in the studio.

3.)  You couldn't have three more different people in a band... and I love the result of their combined personalities and charisma.

4.)  They're all three funny and smart and seem to be very accessible to their fans.

5.)  They've stayed true to themselves...never compromised their art for the sake of the almighty dollar.

6.)  They give BACK to their community.

7.)  They're just cute.

I know this was a long time ago, but i have a reason y i connect to goos.  I have bi-polar depression, and it seems like no matter what goes wrong, w/e i'm sad about theres a song that explains wat i'm going through, and it makes me feel like in this world i'm not alone.  LIke say i'm in a good mood, or flirty then theres We are the normal, and say i'm mad at a gf or something, then theres Up Yours, and etc.  You get the point, but yeah, i connect on a very deep level and thought i would share it with you all.

Oh i also forgot, and i cant believei 'm sharing this, but goo has saved my life, seroiusly.  Like i'm not the worse condition of this depression, cuz it is pretty common, but it can get bad.  When i feel like suicide   :-/ they seem to make me feel like they care, and that their songs are aimed at people like me...

Ahhh, the Goo phenomenon....grand ain't it?

Here's my take:

The incredible songwriting...I feel like we get a glimpse into who they are.  It's such a gift for a band to write songs that evoke the emotions that so many people can relate to.

The muscianship...It's mesmerizing to see them perform.

OK - I gotta say it...Johnnys hotness  which brings up a very important point.   We all know John gets alot of attention (right girls?) and how many bands have broken up over jealousy?  It just doesn't seem possible with this bunch (thank god)
I love how they're all about the music and not all wrapped up in themselves.

Ohhh - one more thing I think is really cool is the long standing friendship between John and Rob...It speaks volumes ;)

p.s. to Shadgoo, there's nothing that can't be overcome!  You've got friends here at WOG who care

What made me connect with the Goo's?

The fact that they are "real." They are humble, and have never let their success go to their head. Regardless of being in Hollywood, or Buffalo, what you see is what you get! Their unique music style, and phenomenal lyrics. They truly appreciate where they are, but never forget where they came from. They have the "it" factor." They offer the whole package. They care about others, and give 150% of themselves in all areas of their lives. They never cease to amaze me! :shines:

And like Eva said, they are "raw." Because of that pure element, it makes it easier for us to identify with them. They're not up on a pedestal somewhere, but share our wave length, and we respect that human equality. :rockin:
