Title: Robby"s Voice
Post by blessed_by_goo on Mar 3rd, 2005, 10:50pm
Was just wondering and probably a stupid question, but I always wondered if Robby's voice has always had that sort of unique husky roughness, or if was his style of singing that damaged his vocal chords in earlier pre goo time, that  left them sort of scarred that way. He so hard on his vocal chords, screaming and wild like. I absolutly love the uniqueness of it. was just curious if it was abuse to them that made them that way or what..... he so crazy  ;D

In an interview, I heard him say he doesn't sound like that for no reason...I can't remember the exact quote but it was something along the lines of spending way too much time in smokey bars.

I wonder where that sound comes from myself. To the best of my knowledge, Robby doesn't smoke or anything like that, I have no idea where that sort of rough, raw sound comes from...it's pretty awesome though  ;D

Another thing I noticed was that in live shows, Robby seems to get breathless a lot. Maybe it's just all the running round he does, I dunno...but with John being the smoker I would have expected HIS lung capacity to be diminished but not Robby's...well like I said, maybe it's the running round that does it.   ???

I also remember that quote, gooberrygirl - I remember he said "I don't sound like Barry White when I talk for nothing" LMAO

As far back as Goo songs go, he's always seemed to sound like that (Just take a listen to 'Sunshine of your Love' on First Release...heh heh heh  ;D ) but I can't imagine that screaming lyrics all these years has helped at all!

His voice is so awesome. I love it.  ;D

I love Robby's voice and harshness in Slave Girl and King of the Road and Amigone and....all of 'em really!      To true ... I know my b/f says her throat hurts after bein in smokey bars. I myself am a smoker so I wouldn't know. I don't know about Robby's shortness of breath way back in the hay day, but I DO notice he gets very winded. I wonder if the weight gain is it? Cuz Iwondered the same thing. John smokes ALOT and it stuns me how he can smoke so much and still hold his chords in length. Sometimes I see that he will get almost hoarse soundin if he over does it. See LIA when they sing What a Scene on the bridge in Kotubue (sp?)
but yeah I mean when I've smoked alot and I try to sing in my car or wherever I get very winded and I'm not runnin around a stage performing!

I don't know where, or why, but I love his voice just the way it is. I wouldn't change a thing about it! :shines:

Rob was a DJ in his early years, so I guess his voice has always been unique- just like him! :flower:

Rob's a kid at heart, and a pinball with hair. He's sure to be a little winded! ;)

Robby as a DJ! He has such a good radio voice!!!
My friend is a singing coach and says that men can basically just f!ck up their vocals chords without doing much damage to their voices, with women its different, we're so delicate and all y'see....... ;)
If I ever go see them in concert (not if, when!!) I'm gonna throw some nicorette patches at John!!! ;D

Just a boy who's young at heart... ;)

Pinball with hair! Ahahaha! Lovin' it!  ;D

Robby would make a great DJ. I'd tune in to listen to that great voice everyday! Plus he'd play really cool songs too  :D

I do find this topic interesting though. You gotta wonder if he was just born with that voice or if something made his voice sound like that. What's your secret, Rob?  ??? ;D

Haha Grace...go for it. I doubt Johnny would appreciate it though! But it would be worth it for the comedy value.

To tell u the truth, I worry sometimes when he sings. It doesn't seem natural. It seems like if he sings any harder he'll destroy his voice.
