Title: New Forum/Board Idea
Post by tkc1989 on Mar 3rd, 2005, 10:42am
I was thinking randomly and wondered if it's possible to have a new board where people can actually upload their video files onto the site for other people to download- is that actually possible? coz if it is then that would be amazing coz it seems to me that loads of people have rare videos on their computers which they can't send to other people because the file is too big. Not sure how or if it would work but it's just a thought.

I like that idea...at another forum I frequent, the trade board is also the file sharing board...so maybe we can add that option there. As well I was thinking maybe we can have a selling option too since some people here want to sell some of thier goo stuff. I guess it could be called the Trading, Selling, Sharing board lol

Big ooooooo!!
I love the idea of a file sharing board, I have nothing to share, but will gladly view whatever anyone else posts up on it!!! ;)

There are photo gallery tools that some boards use that will also allow users to register and upload their own files. They are configurable so that the board op can determine for themselves what file types to allow. Coppermine and Gallery are two such packages, and they are freeware.

The real problem is legality of that. The artists "legally" own the rights to their shows. You have seen those messages on movies that say "any distribution blah blah blah is strictly prohibited without the express written consent blah blah blah". Sharing videos you recorded off TV or at shows falls into the same category. And the owner of the message board becomes the person who takes the fall because they are supplying the means to share these files.

There are boards where videos are posted in their galleries. It think most of the ones I have seen say that they have received permission from the artist to post them.

That would be totally awesome!   :D

I was wondering about something similar myself...recently a lot of people have been asking for certain files...things like Jenny, White Trash Wagon, Silent Night...where possible I've been offering to send people stuff they don't have (the only reason *I* have most of these files is because people were nice enough to send them to ME in the first place, so I like to pass on the Goo) but I was wondering about having some FORMAL way of doing that, you know...where we could all maybe post lists of what we have and then anyone missing out could be sent the stuff they're missing. I don't know what the legality of all this is...most (*ahem*) of the Goo stuff I have on my comp was aquired in a very legal manner, ie they're MP3 and MPeg files I ripped from the CDs and DVDs myself, CDs and DVDs which I LEGALLY PURCHASED and so surely sharing them with you guys couldn't cause a problem...? I mean isn't it just like lending someone a CD so they can tape it for themselves? And THAT has been going on for years, and no-one ever seemed to have a problem with it... ???

Um, about the orginal post topic...I know there are sites like yousendit.com and youshareit.com which will let you upload huge files for others to download...I guess having an official part of the board dedicated to this would depend on legal issues, though... :-/ like Walter said.

that's not really legal either. i mean, no one goes to jail for it, but it's still a copyright violation.

Grr... you should have told me you had never see BTM and Storytellers when I sent you stuff.  I would have sent them!

And while I think it would be nice for everyone to share files, etc, there are probably a lot of legalities that would prevent that, plus it would require a lot of space for everyone to upload.  Plus, even the trading section isn't being too successful...

EEK! Don't 'grr' at me, lol! How was I supposed to know to tell you? Aw, I wish I HAD known. I really wanna see 'em... :(

I don't think they've ever been shown on British TV. I watch music channels a lot and I've never seen either of them...and since no-one here knows who the Goos are there wouldn't be much point in showing 'em I guess.  :(

It's ridiculous that people have the nerve to make so much money off something that costs them so little...

sorry guys... don't want to do that here. it can be done on the website however... i'll think about it... i have no clue how to do that and i don't know if i have the computer power to do it... and people just couldn't upload stuff themselves to it due to safety issues. if you want to post a link to a download as long as it's legal and safe... you can do that here.

Ragdoll uploads tons of stuff like that to her site so maybe you can check things out over there.

you can also get pretty much every dab of goo video on IRC.  that's where i get any of it anymore.  i can't stand watching some two hour t.v. show to catch two minutes of goo, so i just wait until it pops up on IRC.  usually takes a day or two...

am i the only person who has never even SEEN this dvd before??  where are they available??  i just did searches on amazon and vh1.com, and couldn't find it for sale in either place.

i did, however, find this one on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=46353&item=4707094875&rd=1

no picture is always a sign that somethings fishy.  and WHY would it have celebrity tastemaker on it??  that was a muchmusic show, wasn't it?  why would a product produced by vh1 have a much music show (that, btw, came out MUCH later than the behind the music episode, like a whole two albums later).

everyone, say it with me:  FAKE.

Slave Girl, excuse my lack of a brain, whats IRC?

On the topic of ebay, I bought storytellers/behind the music there for $18.49 which works out at E14.00
which I think is really great value. Plus I get to watch American commercials. How I laugh. Laugh all night at bad tic-tac ads. HAHAHAHAHA ;D

It's absolutely 100% fake.  Don't look for it on a legit site, because you won't find it.  And apparently putting together a nice fake cover for it makes it reasonable to sell it for crazy amounts of money.

i suspected as much.  especially once someone else said that they bought the dvd...and it had commercials.  dude.  if someone's out there making dvd boots, they could at LEAST hack the commercials out.

the only "behind the music" dvd's that i found on the vh1 site were megadeth, motley crue, and blondie.

i have SUCH issues with someone trying to make a buck off the goo's.  i would never presume to SELL anything to anyone out of my collection.  maybe compensation for postage or the blank cd's/dvd's, but damn.  i don't know.  that's my personal trip, i'm certainly not passing judgment on anyone else.

I think IRC is the thing I was trying (and failing) to use last night. As far as I understand it, it's shareware, in much the same vein as Kazaa etc. People put vids on there and you can download them. Unless you're useless like me and can't figure out how to use the software, then you're screwed!

Haha, yes Grace, American ads are so funny! They always seem much more cheesy somehow than the ads we have over here!

I'm with The Slave Girl. Selling Goo is wrong...no Goo fan would do that! I would gladly share anything I had, but making profit off it is just wrong.

IRC is my hero...

Here's a basic how-to that someone wrote a while back.  I don't think they'll mind me reposting it.

Quote:
now...the very basic commands that i know are:

!list
this one will tell you basically what is available at that particular time...it will pull up a list of different people and what is called their "trigger"...you will actually see something like this: Trigger: /ctcp IHaveCoolGooStuff...then to get in that person's stuff you type the trigger... /ctcpIHaveCoolGooStuff and it will then look like that person is trying to start a chat session with you, but that is actually you getting in their stuff...hit the "accept" button and you are in.

here are some other commands:

dir
this will show you the person's directories and files

cd
this command will change you into a different directory...for example, if you are in their main directory...and you see one called "rare mp3s", you would type cd rare mp3s and then you are in THAT directory...after that, you can type dir again and it will list all the files in their and any subdirectories.

ls
you can also type "list" and it will do the same thing, list the files that are in the directory you are in.

*i don't know how to go back to the directory i was in without getting completely out and going completely back in...i know that if you type exit, it will end the session that you are in, when you are in the other person's stuff, but that's probably not the right way to do it.

get
this is the important one!  when you see the file you want in someone's directory, you use "get" to, well, get it... like get john_rzeznik_i'm_still_here.mp3...and from there it should be self-explanatory...some of the titles are all long with lots of spaces or dashes...i usually just cut and paste them...you can do the same with people's triggers...

queues
this command will show you where you are in the queue, or the line of people waiting to download something from someone

clr_queues
this command will clear you out of that line if you are in it...unfortunately, you can't clear everyone else out so that you can get your stuff first!

@find
you can use this command when you first join the channel...for example...type @find sympathy and if there are versions of that song available at that time it should show you a list

___________________________________________________________________

4) type "!list" at the bottom and u see bla bla bla.

5) Next look for a trigger, something like

Triggers:/ctcp Jonaleth 10mbitGOO
Triggers:/ctcp NadiaDE CableGoo

-You need to copy this part:   /ctcp Jonaleth 10mbitGOO

and then paste it at the bottom. Copy simply by highlighting that part and then right click and paste at the bottom.
-Click enter and accept.

-Now you're in somebody's folder.

6)

Now u to type these key words.

-  Dir  - to see what's inside.
-  Cd Folder Name - ex) CD goo goo videos    - too look insie folder.

-  cd..    - to get out of folder

- get goo_goo_doll_test.mpg   - to get the file.

7)   If you're downloading, the file will download to "MIRC" folder, usually located at mycomputer>C drive>Programs.

play with it a little.  if Vampyre or someone else is in the forum, they'll usually be pretty wiiling to help.

yes, IRC isn't the most user friendly program, but once you figure out the basic commands, those are really all you need to know.  just don't ask for people to send you album stuff, that's one of the unwritten rules of the channel and folks will get pissy with you.  you should have seen the feeding frenzy on some poor schmoe one night who came in asking for "gutterflower".  i don't think they have anything that is technically available for sale, actually, like i don't think the music in high places show is on there, etc.

i know how to do this.  once you are in the directory, type 'cd...' (the letters cd followed by three periods/dots).  if i am remembering right, that pops you up to the previous directory.  then you can do 'dir' again or you can do 'cd...' to keep going up, if you had to go to several directories to get where you are.

I love IRC! I've been making my own personal dvds from stuff I DL off there. It does take patience to figure it out...but once you get it, it kicks butt.

I don't mind sending stuff to people as your as their email box is big enough or you have AIM/msn and a decent connection speed. I don't always keep stuff in my computer forever though since my hard drive isnt that big LOL.

What about sending files to someone who doesn't have a big mailbox...using a site like yousendit.com?

IRC is kind of a pain in the ass to learn how to use. It took me ALONG TIME before I figured it out.
And if someone doesn't have a big enough mailbox if they have something like AIM or yahoo messenger you can send files that way. I've done it, I've traded entire cds of my bootleg collection with people over AIM.

i feel the same way.  if i have something on my list that someone is DYING for, i don't have a problem sending it to them.  anything on there is pretty free game.

there is some stuff that i have that i don't have listed because i don't trade it except with traders that are sort of on the same level.  before anyone thinks i'm a snot  ;) let me explain.  once you've been trading for a long time and have a large amount of stuff, it actually becomes harder and harder to negotiate trades.  it is hard to be able to make a match between what you do/don't have and what the other person does/doesn't have.  and there is a lot of stuff that is common, and commonly available, and so many people have it at that point that it doesn't trade anymore.  sort of a supply vs. demand or a "dilutes the market" sort of thing.  if those are even actual terms.   ;D

so, yeah, i pretty much don't have a problem sending stuff to peeps.  i can try AIM'ing or messaging it to you, or if that totally won't work, i can even possibly send out a cd.  i always keep a ridiculous supply of blanks on hand, and i don't ever worry about postage because i just run it through the meter at work...

That is kind of how I am. I have almost 200 shows and interviews on cd and about 20 or so on video tape (soon to be dvd) and having so much it is difficult for me to trade with anyone anymore. Believe it or not there is stuff I don't have its just a matter of finding someone with stuff I have that they don't to trade and I won't pay someone for a bootleg. I would send a blank cd and a couple bucks for shipping or a couple bucks for the cd and shipping but I am not going to pay some stupid amount of money to someone for something that they probably got in a trade anway.

exactly.  before i started trading i once paid $25 for a cassette tape (yes you read that right) of the 2000 colorado state fair show.  that show meant a lot to me and at the time i didn't know any better.  i would never in a million years do that now.  i posted on the trading board about wanting any colorado shows played from 1999 to the present.  i've gotten offers to BUY those, which i don't even bother responding to.  it's silly.  and unless that money was at least partially going to the goo's (like live in buffalo, for example), it feels like ripping them off.  it's so metal blade.

Don't believe a word she says.  She gave me her soul already.  :D  (Lea, I'll stick something obscenely rare from Buffalo on a dvd for ya)

i know how to do this. once you are in the directory, type 'cd...' well, that's just fabulously awesome to know.  thanks!

check again...i just updated!

the amigone thing is some clips from the x-files set to the song 'amigone'.  just a little homemade thing, it looks like, nothing official.

'working on a dream' is commonly called a SSCW demo, but it really isn't.  it was from a demo cd that lance diamond did, that the goo's backed him on.  it was done under the name "lance diamond and the 24k band".

AND, i have just gotten a brand new user name in windows/msn messenger!  it is [email protected].  add me...and i'm staying in tonight, so the timing is right!

Working/Waiting on a Dream isn't definitely the Goos.  There was (is?) another band that worked with Lance that used that name as well.

i actually wouldn't mind finding out that the song isn't the goo's. it's sort of...ummm...not my favorite song ever...yeah. i'll leave it at that. ;)

do you know about the other 24k band demos?  are there any of them that are definitely the goo's?

Yeah, nice way of putting that.  I hate the song and find it pretty easy to believe it's not the Goos.

I have seen some stuff about the 24 Carat Band in the past which gave names of the people in it and a timeline, but that was a long time ago.
