Title: "Always Know Where You Are"? Help?
Post by Pinky_Goo on Feb 19th, 2005, 10:27am
Okay, I just found a track called "Always Know Where You Are", it claims it's by the Goo Goo Dolls, and it's definitely John singing it. The thing is, I didn't see it on the "Who Sings What" page on the WOG site. Has anyone else heard this track?

It's from Treasure Planet.  It's John, but not the Goos.  He wrote and sang it, but used studio muscians.

To me, I just dont' really see the point of just calling it a John song and making it just a John song. There was really no difference..don't sound too different!! It just makes it harder for new goo fans to find and those treasure planet songs are so great. They can perform "american girl" live, yet not "I'm still here"??

It's not like John left and was like Beyonce or Gwen stefani where the style was so different.

Ohhh, thank you! I always thought that John had done just one song for Treasure Planet, "I'm Still Here". Guess I was wrong! :P Was that it, or were there more?

those were the only two songs that he did for the movie.  both of his versions are in the actual film, but only his version of ISH is on the soundtrack.  unfortunately (or, i suppose fortunately, depending on how you look at it) BBMak does AKWYA on the soundtrack.

i love treasure planet.  i think it's a great movie, and i was so surprised when it didn't do well.  at least ISH did.

If Mike and Robby have nothing to do with it, it isn't the Goo Goo Dolls. It's John Rzeznik. It sounds a hell of a lot different, in my opinion. When would the Goos ever use synth echo drum tracks?

If you rent the movie they actually play AKWYA at the mid section of credit roll. and I think there are copyright issues as far as the reason why it wouldn't be covered by the Goos. Disney is great, but sticklers when it comes to covers.

You can get John's version on the I'm Still Here single.  I have it.  It's pretty cool, but nothing like the Goo Goo Dolls in my opinion.

I read in an interview somewhere that John actually wrote THREE songs for the film, but they only ended up using two.  I think there were label legality issues (or something to that effect).

As much as it pains me to agree with UpYours (  :P ) I have to do so here. Wasn't really digging the crazy echoey drumness of the song, to be honest...

I agree, RogueUK. Even though I love the lyrics for "I'm Still Here"(I can connect with them in my own little way ;) ), I found that ISH and AKWYA were a bit more . . . Poppy than the Goos. I mean, those two songs sounded as if they should have been on a Planet Pop CD!! I personally prefer the alternative/rock sound of the Goos. (And yes, as far as I'm concerned, there is a HUGE difference between just John and the Goo Goo Dolls. Goo Goo Dolls is plural, as in more than one, NOT JUST JOHN!!! What would we ever do without Mike and Robby??!)

Yes, it seems that a lot of Goo Goo Dolls fans aren't really goo fans at all, they're JOHN fans!! I mean, I know people who have bought the Goo CDs, and ONLY listen to the John songs! They skip every one of Robby's songs (They usually get a smack in the side of the head from me, mind you!), and still call themselves a Goo Goo Dolls fan! It's truly disgusting. Oh well. I guess people will be people. Can't do much about that. I wonder, though, just how many people are true Goo fans??

Are you SERIOUS?! They skip Robby's songs?!

Well then they have no taste, clearly. Idiots.

*Thwacks Matt (brother), who is currently rolling his eyes at Pinky*

Ahem. Moving on from that little outburst.

How can you NOT love Robby!!? I mean, he's--He's--HE'S ROBBY!!! *Cannot comprehend the complexity of it all* :faint:

Have you seen I'm Still Here (Live)?  It leaves a lot to be desired.  If they really felt the need to play it live at a Goos' show then I would hope that they would try doing an acoustic adaptation similar to what John did with his promo appearance on the Disney channel (that version is awesome) because the full song doesn't come of very well in a live setting.  Of course, this is all based on my opinion.

Can't belive what you say. Are there really human beings out there that skip songs on their albums??

What would the Goo Goo Dolls be when only one member would be missing?? No matter if it's John, Robby or Mike? NOT THE GOO GOO DOLLS.

Those fans are the ones Robby talked about once "that John hes so cute, I'm gonna buy all his old records, then they run screaming to their parents" (I'm paraphrasing here!) While I do prefer Johns songs to Robbys,(although I don't skip Robbys songs, I like them too!!) the band is  'The Goo Goo Dolls', not 'Johnny and The Goo Goo Dolls'.

All the same, John does get the 'Diana Ross' treatment, if you will. Robby and Mike get relegated to Supremes status. It doesn't seem to bother them though. But it bothers ME!  >:(

And each to their own, Grace. I generally prefer Robby's songs to John's. They rock, and they're usually damn good fun...even the sad songs Robby writes still manage to rock!

Though I do think John has written some absolutely beautiful songs too. He really has a way with lyrics...like he's writing what you're thinking...and that's pretty cool. It depends on my mood. Sometimes I'll make a John playlist. Sometimes I'll make a Robby playlist. Sometimes I don't differentiate.

Agreed, Juniper. Mike needs more love too. Because in all seriousness, what's a band without a drummer?!

I agree Pinky_Goo. Anyone who doesn't like Robby is clearly the sort of twisted individual who likes to pull the legs off dragonflies. NOT LIKE ROBBY. Pfft. *total disbelief*

I think everyone has an equal and important presence in the band at this time.  That's all there is to it.

Personally, I enjoy both John's songs and Robby's songs equally. However, I do tend to listen to John's songs more often than Robby's. Don't get me wrong, it is NOT because I like them better! The fact of the matter is, I'd rather listen to music I can relate to, and usually it's John's. I find that John's music tends to have a more melancholy, universal appeal to anyone going through a rough time, or just angsting in general. And I'm an angsty person. Therefore, John's songs usually are my first choice.

BUT!

(...Yes, I like getting my point across...)

That is not to say I PREFER John's songs! I enjoy Robby's songs when I'm in a more upbeat mood. Robby's music tends to be fun, more specific and sort of story-telling, if you get my meaning. And what's more fun than a song with upbeat music, interesting lyrics, and an AMAZING vocalist!?! Of course, Robby's slower songs are wonderful as well, and he portrays the mood quite well. To be honest, I just enjoy the Goo Goo Dolls. I don't seperate them, as in "John Songs" or "Robby Songs" usually, and I think that anyone who does so clearly has no taste.

So, my final, closing statement?

Anyone who prefers one artist over the other should NOT call themselves a Goo fan!

...And here ends my pathetic little rant!^_^

I don't think it's that much different, but look at it like this...if u really compare some other goo songs with other goo gongs, it's hella different, much more different than John's songs on Treasure Planet.  Most ppl thought "A boy named goo" and "Dizzy Up the girl" were hella different. Much more different than "dutg" vs "treasure planet".

I just think it's  a pity to not perform "I'm still here" with the dolls cuz it's such a great song. If they can do covers, then why not a John song?

Just because someone prefers one Goo to another doesn't make them a phoney goo fan pinky.  You seem a little worried about the fact that-god forbid-there might be some fans posting here who aren't true fans. You can still be a true fan and prefer one to the other, its all down to personal taste at the end of the day.
The reason I'm saying this is that another band I love have some really elitist fans who don't believe that anyone who got into the band because a certain member or whatever aren't true fans, and it really REALLY pisses me off.  >:(

Ok, now I'm done ranting, lol :-[

Well, Girlnamedgrace, perhaps I was a little prejudiced with my last post. The true message I was trying to get across, though, is that, if someone prefers either John or Robby, how is it that they are a Goo Goo Dolls fan? I mean, liking one band member doesn't equal to someone liking a band, does it? It isn't that I believe in "elitist fans" so to speak. Lord knows I'm a rather new fan myself. Forgive me if I offended anyone, that was not the intention of my post. I simply meant to say that, in MY OPINION, someone who likes but one band member is not a fan of the entire band. Once again, I apologize if I have offended anyone.

As well, I don't think I was implying that someone should not post on this board if they are a "John Fan" or "Robby Fan". I think it's everyone's right to post on this board, if they enjoy any aspect of the Goos or their music. The intentions of my last post were not to put anyone down, but it does seem it came across as such.

Yet again, my apologies. I was wrong, it seems. I hope I didn't give the impression that I disliked fans of either Robby or John. Damn it, I always mess up what I mean to sayyyy!  :-[

Ooh this is getting intense...

I think you have to make a distinction between people who like the Goos but maybe have a particular affinity for one member of the band and people who think the band consists of only one member. Because if anyone is going to tell me that I'm not a 'true' fan because I happen to think Robby's pretty darn cool, then they're essentially talking garbage.

That doesn't mean that I think Robby IS the band. It doesn't mean that I don't like John or Mike. It certainly doesn't mean that I skip John's songs (the very thought  :o )

Pinky_Goo, it's just like you said...I would never pick sides in anything but the most meaningless, tongue-in-cheek fashion (comments like "Oh, you Rzeznik fans!" which are generally taken in the humour they are intended in and have never caused any ill feeling that I'm aware of...) it's just...like you said...John's songs are usually YOUR first choice. Robby's songs are usually MY first choice. It doesn't mean I don't like John.

If someone wants to say that that makes me anything other than a 'true' Goo fan, they can go right ahead. I've been a Goo fan for something like five years and as long as *I* know how I feel about the band nothing anyone else can say really matters.

I feel mildly stressed now. I think maybe we should talk about something less controversial. Like, um...John's pants. No controversy there. Everyone agrees that the man has great pants. Am I right?  ;D

Hmm, I suppose RogueUK is right. But, I guess I'm wrong anyhow! ;) It doesn't matter. I'm having a rough week, perhaps I'm taking it out on you guys.. :( I'm really sorry.

Yes, moving on. JOHN'S PANTS!!! How can there be ANY controversy over such Godly Garments? I think we shall agree to disagree about the above topic, and stick to "John Pants" worshipping! At least, that's what I'm gonna do . . . *Dashes off to google, searching pictures of John and 'The Pants'*

Title: Re: "Always Know Where You Are"? Help?

I just don't think that fact that I love Robby precludes me from loving Goo in general :'( because I do love Goo. I DO!

I don't think anyone here at WOG could be accused of not being a 'true fan'. Despite individual loyalties, we all love the same thing, right? And that's all that matters. Johnny fans, Robby fans, Mike fans, Greg fans...hell, fans of Jason's saxophone playing...it's all GOOd, right? RIGHT! ;D So let's be happy and celebrate what we have in common instead of focusing on our differences. A wise man said that once. Well, probably.

I'm having a rough day myself so maybe I'm a little sensitive. Discussion of John Pants can't fail to cheer us all up, though.

So without further ado, I give you...JOHNPANTS!

And then again, talking about garments moves us away from what the central focus of a fan should be...  the music.

But with that said, I'm going to have to go ahead and agree that John's songs are much more general, so of course you'll be able to relate to them easier.

I like Howie's cover of Slide.  He puts his own twist on it.  He also plays it without John's different tunings, so that may make it sound weird.  Howie Day is a very talented musician.  Did you know Howie opened for the Goos at the beginning of the Gutterflower tour?
