Title: 'I'll Be'
Post by Zeeba on Feb 11th, 2005, 8:35pm
Have Goo Goo Dolls covered the Edwin McCain song 'I'll Be'?

I've found a version that claims to be the Goo Goo Dolls but I don't know if I dare to believe it.  I can't decide whether or not it sounds like one of them.

I think I know the version your referencing and I think Johnny had something to do with the writting of the music itself. But not 100% sure, maybe someone else can confirm it.

It says Goo Goo Dolls-I'll Be (Edwin McCain cover) and it's not the Edwin McCain version.

I'm really curious cos I love the song and I love the Goo Goo Dolls so this would be so awesome if it was actually them

Did you see this version on winmx??? Cuz I saw it there too and wondered the same thing. Those are hard to trust cuz it's just some run of the mill joe shmo that your getting the file from and technically they are the one who actually named the title

Yeah

I thought it might be someone thinking that it was Goo Goo Dolls when it was Edwin McCain, but it's definately a different version, so I was just trying to figure out if they'd gotten the right band.

I actually went to the ass ache of downloading it too...and then deleted it. I was sure it wasn't them, if anything I thought, maybe Johnny was playin guitar, cuz it sounds like his style of chords, but wasn't sure so I deleted it. If you find out let me know.
so I can go and reload it

Welcome to the board by the way, you'll like it here.

edwin mccain wrote a song making fun of john and his whole attitude, so i don't think they'd ever collaborated on anything.

I remember hearing that before, but I can't remember the title of the song.  This will drive me crazy now.

It's called Radio Star.  Here are the lyrics:

I tell you my story on VH1
And all of my personal hell
And how my dad beat me and how much he drank
Do you think it'll help my records sell

Cause Im the radio star with the cars and the clothes
The fancy guitars and the spoon in my nose
You know in my world now anything goes
You all want to be me, and Ill be gone in a week

Hang out with Britney and Fred Durst
Arrive in a limo, Ill leave in a hearse
And I cant decide now which part is worse
Losing my life to the game, or losing the fortune and fame

Cause Im the radio star with the cars and the clothes
The fancy guitars and the spoon in my nose
You know in my world now anything goes
You all want to be me, and Ill be gone in a week

You put me on TV with all the cool stars
Like Letterman, Conan and Jay
Cause were all experts at the art of PR
And nobody knows that Im gay

Im the radio star with the cars and the clothes
The fancy guitars and the spoon in my nose
You know in my world now anything goes
You all want to be me, and Ill be gone in a week

Im the radio star
Im the radio star
Im the radio star
Im the radio star

This is referring to the song mentioned above.

"I was watching the Goo Goo Dolls on Behind The Music," McCain says, recalling the song's genesis, "and there's poor Johnny Rzeznik, going 'Poor me! Waah-waah-waah!' They were just complaining about everything, and I thought, 'This is such malarkey!' Then there was a whole segment about Johnny's writers block and I about puked on myself laughing at how stupid it was! You've got to be kidding me! We live the most ridiculously privileged lives, and the worst they can come up with to gain sympathy for these idiots is writer's block! Gimme a break! So I was sitting there laughing at him, with his chiseled chin and his hairdo and all that other crap, and the song popped out like 14 seconds later!

"Truth be told, I think Rzeznik is an unbelievable songwriter," he goes on. "I love his stuff and I'm pretty sure he and I would get along like crazy, but that was basically the beginning of the song. You watch Behind The Music - you can't help but watch, cause it's like a train wreck - and the ones that are really good are the ones where the rock star gets fucked bad! You want that karmic factor to come into play, like, if you're going to be a multimillionaire then you should have some pretty rough times. It's all 'Waah waah! We signed a bad contract!' - well you put your fucking name on it, moron! And they're all bad contracts! So I was having a hard time feeling sorry for Johnny, but it was brilliant fodder for my songwriting. I hope it gets on the radio and I hope it pisses a bunch of people off!"

LMAO, that's such a great aim!!  :hahaha: Did it do that, does anyone know? I don't think I've ever even heard that song; then again I'd never heard of Edwin McCain 'til I mistakenly downloaded "I'll Be" a few years back like Zeeba did, which said it was by the Goo Goo Dolls. :P

I really like the song, but I don't know much else about him.

I like the other version.  I dunno who sings it, I'm trying to figure it out, because when I did a search it did have the lyrics for the song under Goo Goo Dolls.
