Title: SNOW! Post by the red o on Oct 12th, 2006, 8:48pm http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/crookedrhyme/just%20weird/buffalosnow.jpg Will someone tell me why I live here? It's October 12th and we're getting snow. Power lines are down. There are travel advisories. Where I go to school there's 8" of snow (C'mon cancellations!). Oh! Added bonus - there's now thunder. I didn't know you could have snow and thunder at the same time. |

Title: Re: SNOW! Post by The Purple O on Oct 12th, 2006, 9:34pm Uh oh! I hope we don't get snow. I'm not ready for that yet! |

Title: Re: SNOW! Post by Shannon on Oct 12th, 2006, 10:12pm You see that cloud? It had to pass through me to get to you. We did indeed have snow, sun and thunder all at the same time. It's been the most bizarre day. And, it is so cold. This is the time of year I question my sanity for living in the North. |

Title: Re: SNOW! Post by YoursGOOLY on Oct 12th, 2006, 10:21pm Here in northern Wisconsin we have an inch on the ground. Yesterday was the 1st "snowstorm" of the season. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! :P I need to relocate somewhere warm- anyone interested?! |

Title: Re: SNOW! Post by the red o on Oct 12th, 2006, 10:24pm It's times like these I'm ready to kick the renters out of our rental property in Daytona Beach and move down there. Wanna come with me? :D I didn't know you got hit with it. They were calling it a lake effect storm here, so I assumed some cold air over the warm Lake Erie made the snow. Hope everything is okay for you. My power has been flickering for the past 10 minutes so I think it's time for bed. Hopefully I'll wake up to school cancellations or my power will go and the alarm will never wake me up... :D |

Title: Re: SNOW! Post by the red o on Oct 12th, 2006, 10:27pm YoursGOOLY, I just glanced at your sig pic and misread "resist" on john's shirt for "racist". Wow. Definitely had to take another look... :D |

Title: Re: SNOW! Post by the green o on Oct 12th, 2006, 11:54pm Yeah, my sister in Michigan today said they got snow too. I love snow, but it's way too early for it, methinks. A friend of mine in Minnesota told me about how they have the thunder & snow combination. She had a name for it, but I can't remember what it was. That must be kinda bizaarre. Wishing you get that school cancellation you're hoping for. It's the least they can do to give ya a break. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Okay, I went to look it up on google...gotsta love the google... and it's called "thunder snow". Jeesh, you'd think they could come up with a cooler name for it. Maybe in MN they call it yeahsureyabetcha or something. But here's the article I found: http://www.nytimes.com/learning/students/scienceqa/archive/990118b.html |

Title: Re: SNOW! Post by the red o on Oct 13th, 2006, 5:57am Well, I got my wish. And am somehow awake 2 hours before I normally would be... Basically all of WNY is closed. Schools, banks, malls, roads, everything. The listings just told me that customs offices to Canada are closed. Trees still have their leaves, so the snow is breaking them like crazy. Somewhere that I haven't determined yet got 30 inches of snow. Erie County has a water ban (I'll take a nice hot shower in my house 2 miles outside of Erie for them). I'm one of those people who bitches at people who talk about how it snows year round in Buffalo. I think I lost that battle yesterday... |

Title: Re: SNOW! Post by Shannon on Oct 13th, 2006, 7:10am It was snowing quite badly here for awhile yesterday but nothing stuck. 30 INCHES....that's insane! It's OCTOBER! I can't handle snow this early...I'm just not ready to deal with it yet. I can understand snow in November and as a kid we usually had piles of it by Thanksgiving. But never have I experienced snow before Halloween. It's been a very weird, yucky fall. :-/ At least all your classes are cancelled today.....bonus. **Your record snowfall made the news here today. You guys are celebrities!** |

Title: Re: SNOW! Post by Raven on Oct 13th, 2006, 12:45pm I live in Toledo, Ohio, about 50 miles south of Detroit. We got snow yesterday as well, and it stayed on the ground until last night sometime. This is way too early for snow. I have a feeling we are going to have one last blast of warm weather. One can dream right? LOL! ;D |

Yes, dirty tired cold sore celebrities... About an hour after gloating about my electricity it was taken away. A tree across the street snapped and downed the power lines and I was woken to that horrible horrible sound of exploding power lines. Never fun watching an electrical fire burning the trees across the street... So... when we lost our power we lost hot water and we lost the sump pump. So no showers. And bailing water out of the sump pump hole in the basement every half hour by filling buckets and carrying them to the ground floor. Fortunately by the time we were losing the sump pump battle and water was flooding the basement my brother in law's father gave us his generator to power the sump pump and the refridgerator. Very luckily our next door neighbor works for NYSEG, the local electric and gas company. I think for that reason my street got bumped up on the priority list. We got power back at about 1:30 this morning. I think we're in the minority having power. We have a list of people coming over to take showers... It's such a mess. There are tons of trees down. Flooding everywhere. And my city apparently didn't get it as hard as the others... |

Title: Re: SNOW! Post by the red o on Oct 14th, 2006, 11:34am Here are some bad pictures. Some have the screen in them, but I wasn't going outside... Power lines down and starting a fire. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/crookedrhyme/storm%2010-13-06/100_2027.jpg Fire truck at electrical fire http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/crookedrhyme/storm%2010-13-06/100_2031.jpg Tree that caused power outage. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/crookedrhyme/storm%2010-13-06/100_2029.jpg Tree in side yard that split in half. Title: Re: SNOW! Post by Shannon on Oct 14th, 2006, 12:32pm GEEZ!!! I can't seem to wrap my head around the fact that it's only October. Those pics remind me of late December/early January. We get snow here in Detroit but I can't remember the last time we got snow to the point where it completely shut the city down like that....maybe the blizzard of 1980. We'll have pockets of areas that will get hit hard like that but never enough to shut the entire city/metro area down. That just amazes me. I'm feeling really grateful we were on the front side of that storm. |

Title: Re: SNOW! Post by the red o on Oct 15th, 2006, 11:49pm No school AGAIN for Monday. It's good because I'm sick and can use all the sleep I can get, but bad because I have an assignment due Tuesday that I have no idea how to do... :-/ Still happy I didn't get the damage some of the other cities did. |
