OK just curious being from UK and all. Why do you guys call em "cell phones"? We call them mobile phones, im guessing coz they are mobile and phones. But why cell phones, where it come from? Curious coz Im working in a phone shop at mo over summer :P

The service on a mobile phone is cellular so we call it a cell phone ... cellular phone. At least that's how I've always understood it.

I call it a cell, or a cell phone.

Just let me think what I tell my mom when I leave...

I'm a 'cell' kinda girl haha my away messages usually have 'cell it' in it somewhere and even when I talk about phones I say 'cell'

Yeah. Cell phones connect to a "cellular network" made up of a bunch of cell sites. And that's about the depth of my understanding.

Speaking of which, this discussion reminded me of another cultural difference. The technology that enables text messaging is called Short Message Service (SMS). When I was in Germany, everyone was calling it SMS (verb form: "simsen"). But in the US, everyone says "text message" (verb form: "texting").

i usually say, "i have my cell with me" �*shrugging shoulders* for whatever that's worth! �;)

difference in the UK/American words or phrases can be quite funny at times!

A friend of mine lives near Manchester, and her and I always would get confused on some of the words we each use.

Hey Shaun, being from the US and all, why do you in the UK say "ring" instead of "call?" You ring someone, we call them. :thinkin:"

Why is the "hood" of our car, called the "bonnet" on yours? :thinkin:
Why is the "roof" of our car called a "hood" over there? So much confusion! :hahaha:

I have a good friend who lives in kent! How far from there do you live? :D

Years ago I worked in an office with a dude from the UK and he was looking for rubbers. I gave him a funny look, and he clarified that we call them erasers!

When I first saw someone post 'chuffed' on the board I thought it meant 'mad' or 'angry'. Come to find out it's the opposite...lol. That's one of my favorite words now.

Hmm we say ring I think coz ofphone going "ring ring" simple minded, though lots of people in uk say IM gona call you.

Tis bizzare, my mum laughed at me coz I sed "the side walk has no one on" Should have been saying path :P

I live in York so a fair bit a way from Kent.

Some more random words, im not sure who owns which, US or UK, you guys decide.

Couch/sofa
Lift/Elavator
Lounge/Living room

Oh do you guys say candy instead of "sweets"?

US uses elevator and living room. �And yes, we call sweets candy.

The US is huge though, so there's variation in words in different parts of the country. �Like, I say pop while other people in the country say soda. �I also call a 'lollipop' a sucker.

I've always wished we said "loo" instead of bathroom or restroom.

Remember those things they were gonna come out with....like a computer in the bathroom or something. What were they called? iloo i think....they were from Apple.

I saw on T.V. that you guys in the U.K. call cigarettes "****s" and I think thats about the funniest thing ever! I just call them cigs or smokes.

I know some Irish people, and I noticed one of the funniest cultural differences when I asked one of them if he needed a ride home from the theater. When I asked, "Hey, you want a ride?" he looked horrified and then amused.

They, apparently, say "lift" to mean a lift home in someone's car. "Ride" is sexual. It got even worse, when I started to explain by saying, "Oh, yeah, we just say ride. It's not sexual at all. Like, I could get a ride from my Grandparents."
