Title: A small request on my part.... Post by rzezniksangel on Jul 15th, 2006, 8:57pm For the past month, my grandmother has been in the hospital. She went to the emergency room on 6/18 (we were at her house for dinner celebrating my birthday), and wound up having her gall bladder removed...ELEVEN DAYS LATER. As a result of the massive amount of morphine that was in her body, as well as the surgery/anesthesia, she has gone into congestive heart failure. She has been in the ICU for 7 days now, and is on a ventilator to breathe for her, in hopes that her heart would regain some strength and she would be okay. Well, yesterday, we were given the horrific news that sometime in the next 24-48 hours, her heart will give out and she will pass away. This is a very painful ordeal for my family as we are all very close. I've done nothing but cry for days now. Especially since last night and this morning she was somewhat coherent and had her eyes open....comminicating with us by squeezing her hands, moving her feet, and making some facial expressions. I'm having an extremely hard time facing this tragedy, and only ask that you all say a prayer for us to be able to get through this together. I don't know what I would do without my Goo buddies....you guys are the best! |

I know exactly what it's like to go through that whole ordeal. My grandfather suffered from congestive heart failure for years before he passed. She had 2 heart attacks and a stroke, and after the stroke she was left paralazied on one side and coherent. She couldnt recognize anyone. She needs dialasis becasue her kidneys dont work, so they didnt want to feed her. If they did feed her then dialasis, she would die, because it would be too much for her. So they put in a feeding tube, and gave her morphine to make her pass more peacefully. Shes gone now.. But i hope you and your family does good... |

My prayers are also with you & your family at this very difficult time. My only hope is that when my grandma finally does pass away, that she goes in her sleep and doesn't feel anything. We've learned alot of bad things about the hospital she's in over the past few days, and are actually conferring with several families of other patients in the ICU....who are in similar situations to ours. Things are not looking good for the hospital either.... And to make matters worse, my dad called me this morning to inform me that my grandfather (who lives in vermont) has to go into the hospital to have fluid drained from his lungs, and that his doctors have started to give him morphine to make him comfortable. He was diagnosed with terminal cancer in December of last year, and originally was only given weeks to live...he's beaten that...but time is running out for him as well. Oh, and my great uncle passed away on Thursday morning too. Yeah....things are intense to say the least. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers....you don't know how much it really does mean to me! |

Melissa, the situation at the hospital where your grandmother is sounds really bad. I hope, like you say, that when she goes, she will be in no pain. |

As of yesterday, my grandma is off of the ventilator, and now down to only the oxygen mask. Tomorrow, they are supposed to remove both the mask and feeding tube, so she'll be breathing on her own, and the food will be going through her IV. Right now, our only worry is that she had a stroke about a week and a half ago...so once the effects of the sedatives wear off, we'll see how badly she was effected by it. But until then, we're very hopeful for somewhat of a recovery. I want to thank you all again, from the bottom of my heart, for your thoughts and prayers. I truly believe that they are part of the cause of her slow recovery. |

In spite of everything looking good last week...Saturday morning grandma went back onto the ventilator. She's now on dialysis as well....to aid in her renal failure (kidneys not working), she's jaundice, has sepsis, and will probably have a trachiostomy sometime in the next few days. So I really haven't had a good couple of days. And to top it all off....my grandpa (the one in vermont) has been put on hospice, and will most likely not make it through the next 24 hours. He told my dad at 1:15 this afternoon that he's ready to die, and that he would hold out until he got up there so he could say goodbye. Dad got there about 2 hours ago....and made sure he got the chance to call and say goodbye to me as well. I'm having a really rough time with all of this, and knowing that you're all here really does mean alot to me. I may not say it all that often, but I really do love all of you....you're like an extension of my family! |

An hour after we all left the hospital tonight, we got the phone call that my grandma has passed away. I want to thank you all again for all of your thoughts and prayers....each one gave us a little bit more time with her. My family is facing a very difficult recovery period, and I just hope we can all stick together. |

I'm not going to say I know what you're going through..bc I don't..but I did lose one of my best friends in a car crash about 3 years ago..and I still haven't completely gotten over that..so if you ever need anybody to talk to..just about your loss..or even just about the lives of the people you've lost..I'm here for you! |
