SAW GOOS TWOCE YESTERDAY

Kowloon restaurant just north of Boston for the mix 98.5 promo gig yesterday. Place was empty, I've had uncanny luck regarding this band, been fortunate enough to get really close at tons of shows, the whole on the rail thing, drinks with John and Robby, but this was ridiculous. The words private and intimate surly apply here. The stage was probably one foot off the ground and this little wooden dance floor lie before it. No crowds no shoving maybe 15 people standing in front of the band. I literally stood one foot from the band, it really was exciting. Their tour manager was running around making arrangements in an argyle sweater. (It was 70degrees in Bean Town yesterday) They took FOREVER to finally appear, Damage was faithfully preparing the guitars for John, two new guys replacing Greg and the other guy with the John Deer hat, sorry can’t think of his name, but I know they have both moved on to other projects. The two new tour members are quite young, the guitar player looks a little like John, talented but so young. Makes Robby, Mike and John represent as the seasoned veterans that they are. Robby was lucid, funny and happy, Mike nondescript, John was extremely tired, swollen, red eyes. (They were scheduled to do a studio interview in kiss108 at 9am but didn’t show) The DJ's made John chat between songs, the usual stupid questions, he was very shaky and uneasy, but his voice sounded smooth and clear when he spoke. He closed his eyes while he sang, as usual, the guy is nervous, it was obvious that he wanted to get this thing over and SCRAM!!!! They ran out the back door only to find the usual group of diehards wanting a pic or a hug. They were all exceptionally gracious with their time, signing & posing for pics before hoping into a car next to their bus and leaving for Boston Harbor. They left their bus in the Kowloon parking lot along with a huge tractor trailer truck with their gear in it....its quite an undertaking this touring thing!!! Later the 92.9wbos Harbor Cruise: this crappy “cruise” boat was like an overgrown S.S. Minnow. Three levels, band set up on the lower level, second level reserved for the band and entourage, before and after the set. We stood on the upper level after the gig and looked below at the people looking into the windows as the boat was making its way back to the harbor. People were gawking at the band was like they were looking into a fish bowl. Robby did come out for one picture. They were opening the doors and trying to talk to John. Security ran them off a few times, but they were relentless. The weird thing is how many men were begging through the windows for a photo or an autograph. Quite a few couples who were jointly overzealously seeking they band out. Fame is a strange thing; I am amazed at the behavior of some fans at every gig that I’ve been to. Its like a study on the fan/fame thing, I am so amazed by how people behave in the presence of famous musicians. What guy is going to beg some dude in a band for an encounter? It’s weird enough when girls do it. I just love observing this behavior. Especially when girls put make up on right before the band comes out, what is that? I saw that again yesterday, do they think that some band member is going to notice them and marry them? Strange, but I love watching it. I guess fame is a weird thing; everyone you encounter wants a piece of you. The 92.9WBOS cruise was soooo crowded, John was much more into that gig....the music sounded great on the boat, probably because the ceiling was so low, several songs from the new album and a few oldies, Broadway, Slide sans Name........the new tunes are good, this record may make it! Rough ride, a couple of big a few wakes, enough to make everyone take a few steps forward and then back. Robby commented that he had quit drinking nine months ago and had been waiting for this feeling again, a little woozy. Too many people crammed into a small space and way too many fumes from the engines, HEADY. Numerous repeat lyrical themes, but Rzezniks unique and supreme songwriting abilities were apparent, several new and harder guitar riffs too. John interacted with the crowd more that I’ve ever seen and cracked a few jokes. I know where Cameron Crow was coming from, the entire inner workings of a tour and the behavior of us crazy humans is genuinely intriguing! They ran off the boat with the masses admiring they every move and off to another group of loving fans somewhere else in this big country………………………….

That was an amazing, descriptive review.... thanks so much for taking the time to write it all out for us.... and yeah...hey, don't mess with the fantasy.... we can all dream can't we? j/k.... it is pretty remarkable how big of an ass we can make of ourselves wwhen it comes to the like of Mr Johnny Rzeznik.... only to look in hind sight and say I'm such an ass! LOL .... but we only live once... and should act mostly on spontanuity, than to look in hind sight with regret of just doing nothing at all. I promise to give reviews when I go..... hope to see and meet some of you. ~ Kari AKA Blessed By Goo
