Goo Goo Dolls don’t disappoint with strong show in Pompano

Just as the sun was setting, Johnny Rzeznik, Robby Takac, and Mike Malinin (and two touring musicians) took the stage. When the well seasoned rockers burst into their appropriate opening number “Last Hot Night In America”, there wasn’t a soul still in their chair. The electrifying energy coming off the stage seemed to radiate throughout the entire city of Pompano Beach. Or, it just could have been the throngs of screaming female fans every time the oh-so-dreamy Rzeznik would take a breath of the same air they were breathing.
As the group barreled through their set, fans were given exactly what they wanted: a healthy dose of the Goos’ entire catalog complete with the outgoing antics of bassist Robby Takac and the crowd commanding voice of the front man.
Set highlights included: “Slide”, “Iris”, “Name”, “Here Is Gone”, “Give A Little Bit”, “Stay With You”, and “Better Days”.
Starting the night were openers Parachute and Michelle Branch.
Although Parachute played to a fairly thin crowd, that didn’t stop the Virgina based indie-rockers from laying it bare for whoever was there. Aside from front man Will Anderson running through the crowd, the highlights of their set were “Ghost” and their take on the Wallflowers smash hit “One Headlight”.
Although singer-songwriter Michelle Branch had recently contracted food poisoning, she helped further the crowd’s anticipation for the Goo Goo Dolls. Although her set was rather short, she managed to include all of her biggest hits including, “All You Wanted” and “Are You Happy Now?” and a few tunes off of her upcoming release including, “Spark”. However, noticeably absent from her set was a live drummer and live backing vocals (pre-recorded beats and vocals were used instead). Either way, fans didn’t seem to mind the missing pieces.
The Goo Goo Dolls have been around for more than 20 years, and they are showing no signs of slowing. Since 1986, their formula for success has been tested and ultimately proven. And as long as Johnny Rzeznik continues to take good care of himself, that formula will continue to work. Not too bad for a bunch of guys named Goo.
