Goo Goo Dolls tap emotions

Johnny Rzeznik feels your pain.

As the decades-long frontman for stadium-rock vets Goo Goo Dolls, you'd figure he might be aloof, detached from the struggles of everyday folk. But the 44-year-old Buffalo, N.Y., native prides himself not on his stature but rather on his ability to relate to hard-working Americans.

"A lot of people have lost their homes and their jobs and are in really hard times," he said recently.

"I think everybody is living in this state of chronic low-grade fear and insecurity, and I think it's really starting to wear people out."

So how does a rock star who currently lives in Los Angeles maintain the ability to relate to the common struggles of common people? Well, by "not having any famous friends," as he proudly admits -- and by leaving Los Angeles.

Come Aug. 31, the Goos will drop their ninth record, "Something for the Rest of Us." The album was partially crafted in Rzeznik's hometown of Buffalo. Originally set for a February release, the four-years-in-the-waiting record was one that Rzeznik labored over.

"It was a difficult record to write, yeah," he said. "We had a few setbacks we had to overcome -- but I'm really proud of the outcome of it. I think this album has a lot of serious emotional content."

Disingenuous as it may sound, Rzeznik does appear to have his finger on the pulse of America -- and, with any luck, fans will feel that empathy when the Goos play the 1-800-ASK-GARY Amphitheatre on Sunday. Expect to hear six new songs.

"I just wanted to give a voice to a lot of people in this country that are feeling that they're becoming obsolete," Rzeznik said, "and that there is a real sense of longing to belong somewhere, to be part of something, to have purpose."
