Goo Goo Dolls find album is better with second effort

Something wasn't quite right about the Goo Goo Dolls' forthcoming record, "Something for the Rest of Us."

"We sat down and listened to it. We were like, all right, this is great. But then we started playing the songs as a band, and we were like, 'You know what, I want to go back and do that, I think we should do this,' " said frontman/guitarist John Rzeznik.

So the band did what a band of their stature can afford to do: They started from scratch.

"We just basically tore it back down and redid a bunch of stuff because I wanted to get it closer to what I imagined it in my head that it would sound like," explained Rzeznik, whose pop-rock band has sold more than 9.5 million records in the nearly 25 years since forming as a garage band in their native Buffalo, N.Y.

"I wanted an enormous tonal palette to work with. … I just wanted to play around and really hear the sounds that I heard in my head," he said.

The album was due out months ago but is now slated sometime this summer. The label, Warner Bros., has not announced a release date.

But the band has been slowly introducing the new material at its live shows, playing a few cuts in between its catalog of hits that includes "Iris," "Slide," "Black Balloon," "Broadway" and "Dizzy."

"It can be a little scary playing material people haven't heard before. I'm not sure how people are going to react," said Rzeznik, 44, during a phone interview from Los Angeles.

Rzeznik said "Something for the Rest of Us" reflects where the band members are these days: somewhere south of their 1990s heyday, but nowhere near their end days.

"We're not a super-hit indie band. We're not a slickly produced R&B act," he said. "I think the thing that keeps you most relevant is having songs on the radio … and always try to push yourself to do better."

That's what drove them on the new album, which goes off on organic tangents, he explained, that take the music where he believes it is meant to go.

"It's not like we're wanking off for the sake of 'Look how good I play.' It was like, in my mind, this is where the song is going," he said.

Monday's concert at Casino del Sol's AVA is the first Tucson show by the Goo Goo Dolls since a date at the same venue in 2003.

Tucson holds fond memories for Rzeznik, who remembers a Hotel Congress gig in the band's early days. The band partied in the hotel's venerable Tap Room and took rooms in the upstairs hotel, he said.
