The Goo Goo Dolls hold nothing back

The Goo Goo Dolls played their closest thing to a homecoming gig for the summer of 2008 at the Seneca Allegany Casino Events Center on Saturday, before a house full of rabid fans.

The band, recently honored as the group with the most hits on adult top 40 radio, and fresh from contributing a tune to a compilation CD benefiting the U. S. Olympic Team, took a break from recording its forthcoming album to deliver a powerful set of crowd favorites.

The band even threw in a new song. It, like everything else offered from the Events Center stage, went over well.

The Goos kicked it hard Saturday, smoking through an inspired set, taking time to interact with the crowd for much longer than normal, balancing raucous punk pieces against the more sophisticated style that marks their later work.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt if you have hit after hit with which to compose your set list. For the first part of the show, the Goos — who released a diverse hits and deep-cuts compilation Tuesday — tore through 3z-minute, pop-savvy modern rock tunes like men on a mission. At first, it seemed like they might have been anxious to smoke through the gig, but in fact the rapid-fire attack of “Long Way Down,” “Here Is Gone,” “Big Machine” and “Slide” acted as a long-form distillation of everything the Goos have been doing well for the past 15 years.

These are insanely catchy tunes, and singer/guitarist John Rzeznik, bassist/vocalist Robby Takac, drummer Mike Malinin, keyboardist/guitarist Korel Tunador and guitarist Brad Fernquist played them with real fire. The crowd ate it up — this was what they came for.

It’s always a treat when we come to the portion of the show where Takac rewards fans of the Goos’ early punk-metal stylings, of the sort that comprised many a sweaty, beer-soaked night in Buffalo clubs way back when. Takac’s rough-shod delivery of “Another Second Time Around” and “Tucked Away” provided apt contrast to Rzeznik’s more introspective ballads and post-Replacements rockers.

“Feel the Silence” and “Black Balloon” were crowd favorites, the latter finding the devout bouncing those black balloons across the front-of-stage area, the former encouraging the swooning that was a consistent activity amongst the largely female crowd.

A highlight of the show came prior to the band’s breakthrough hit, “Name,” when Rzeznik engaged the crowd in a bit of cat-and-mouse and went way off script (I think) to tell a few stories about growing up in Buffalo and going to Catholic school.

The Goos have quite the repertoire, and Saturday’s show was one of the strongest they’ve offered Western New York audiences in quite some time.
