n After so many years writing and recording records, what motivates you now?
I guess there is a fear of it all dissipating and having to get another job, but I don't think that's really what keeps us going. It's more the fact that we try to do what we do in the best way we can and still grow. It's not the easiest place to be, but it's also pretty privileged because a lot of people don't get the chance to have a career that spans that amount of time. We look at bands who have been able to do it and morphed their careers from one phase to another and we try to learn from them.
n As a rock band that has enjoyed long-term success in a fickle music industry, you are in a small minority.
I think having the luxury to look back and see what we have as a career, we're all pretty thankful that we've ended up in this situation. We rebuilt the old studio where we did all our very, very old records. I think every once in a while, through the chaos of working there, you get this revelation: wow, we're here and this is our place now. When we started, out we felt lucky to even have the opportunity to stand in a place like this for a day.
n The band members are known for wearing their hearts on their sleeves both lyrically and in their live performances?
When you show up in someone's town you have to be able to deliver in a capacity that people can believe. There're a lot of bands who put out records and when they come out to perform the song, it doesn't seem to have the level of emotion.
Releasing albums is only half of what we do. The other half is playing liveshows, and to be able to bring those songs to people and still maintain that emotional capacity is a huge part of our motivation. When you're out there doing it at the highest level and there are 35 people in the room, it really prepares you to do it when there's 35,000 people all looking up at you expectantly. A lot of groups don't have that time to hone their craft. I don't know if we appreciated it so much when we were driving around in the van, but I do know that's a very significant part of why we're still able to go out there and do this. n
